Your recommendations for "must have" freeware aircraft?

I fly regularly with a friend of mine and we're finding that some of the freeware aircraft we're trying are really just not up to snuff. Bad flight models, no vc etc. We're looking for a list of must-have freeware planes (of all types) that are "good".

Good = Virtual cockpit, decent "realistic" flight model, fancy features (clickable buttons in cockpit etc), decent visual appearance.

An example of what we consider good is this F86 Saber. It was built for Fs9 but has been ported over to FSX (in an interim way) very nicely. It's a joy to fly, looks terrific, has a great VC with lots of goodies and even sports engine failures, stuck gear etc if you abuse it. Definitely "good".

I THINK the Connie posted here recently would qualify as well, but despite several careful reinstalls of the aircraft, it freezes my system up a minute or two into the flight for some reason. The jury is still out on that one, hopefully I can get it running somehow for testing.

Anyway, I'm posting this to a few locations in a search for some "good" freeware aircraft. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Thanks,
datter

well - you can search for Phil Taylors list of freeware for FSX

All of the really good stuff is in that list incl. the neoqb Dr1 Triplane

You also want all of Piglets Planes for FSX, especially the AA-5 Grumman Tiger

there is an MD500 Hughes Helo available at Avsim - but you have to get rid of all the old guages and substitute the FSX Bell 206B ones...not too difficult

but a quick search for the above items will net you some outstanding freeware

The section f8 Sabre is in a class by itself though, being as it was, done by a whole team of very talented people and considering the detail and volume of work that it represents.

The Fokker Dr1 by neoqb is probably second only because its a smaller project but in no way is the quality any less than that of the Sabre jet - so you should know that right off the top.

The rest of the freeware out there or most of it anyways - represents the work of various individuals working alone to create and provide the community with exceptional quality works for no monetary gain whatsoever. To them I tip my hat and raise a glass every time I pour one, Believe It :ernae:

If you're into helicopters, the Team Bremerhaven BO-105 and Hovercontrol 412 are really cool.

If you like gliders, check out the Genesis 2. Don't expect a whole lot of complex engine management, though. :)

Jets, well we can't say SectionF8 enough. Also Dino Catteneo's T-45 (if you have Acceleration).

Piglets planes are nice. I'm particularly fond of the A-29B.

Charles Owens did a nice mod for the default DC-3. Designed for FS2004, it introduces engine management and various types of failures. It works well in FSX. The only downside is that it uses the default DC-3.

Also a FS9 port, Milton Shupe's Beech D-18 is still a great airplane.

I've tried to d/l and install the neoqb Dr1 Triplane twice now. Getting a corrupted file message. Anyone else have a problem with it?

I had the same problem. VERY slow transfer rate, which eventually times out anyway. I Googled the file name and found it in a directory here, though amidst some dubious company. Transfer rate is good though, but do just download the dr1. ;)

Thanks anyway, but same problem with the file from there.

If you like to admire the scenery from time to time, you can try the MiniMax, available in the library here.
