A word of warning - Microsoft are not your friends

Last weekend, my M$ account was hacked and I got warnings at night when I was asleep that my M$ account was hacked. How they did it, I have no idea because my PC is well-secured and all my browsers run in a sandbox. I work in IT so you could say that I'm pretty security conscious. Anyway, when I couldn't get in my account anymore and my MSFS were inop, I alerted M$ of this and provided them with all the info they needed. Believe me, the questions they ask are pretty intrusive, but hey, I did.

It took them two days to look into this, and then I got the following answer:

I haven't lost the sims, they were bought through Steam, but all the market place purchases are now lost. IMHO, this is outrageous; They can see the account that took over my account, they were provided with my elaborate answers, and then they do this to a loyal customer of + 20 years. That is pretty disgusting.

You can imagine that this is not the best day of my flightsimming life.

Micro$oft are effing thieves and they don't protect their customers, neither do they care about us. For them, it's the dosh.

Minecraft? Seriously?
Question Jan, for the I.T. guy that you are, ... do you leave your computer running 24/7?
And then after that comment about OneDrive, and you ask me why I despise it? :dizzy:

Are you really sure you were dealing with Microsoft?

It sounds like a classic malware scam. They gork your files then tell you to call a number where you have to provide some personal data.
With the Win10 EOAS stuff coming up next month, I'm seeing more spam e-mails.
This is also why I don't use anything in the cloud including One Drive. :rocket:

Of course I don't leave my PC running 24/7. And the only thing that M$ account was used for, is MSFS. I'm happy now that I bought the sims using Steam. At least that investment isn't lost.

I'm very sure. I was notified of the hacking by M$ themselves and they did nothing about it. I asked for them to delete the other email account that took over my account, had to go through a pretty intrusive investigation and the mail that I posted here was the result of the investigation.

Love how they let you know that you can repurchase any lost accounts.
Make me feel they have no interest in ending these account attacks, as they just get more income from your repurchasing.
Wow.

Same here.

Tomorrow, I'll do a complete fresh reinstall of my gaming PC and will create another M$ account on my work laptop. It's going to be a while before I can post screenshots again.

Well it's what I used to do for a living, and loved it. Nowadays I have to combine tech with managerial stuff... The tech bit is what gets me through the work days.

I understand that. Been doing my own since my 286 in 1990. My cooling system is currently sealed, I'm prepping to tear it apart and add a reservoir and a pump and rigid tubing. For a longer life of my system.

Jan, I didn't know you were "anointed" but you understand why I asked that last question. :ernaehrung004:
People get scammed all the time.

One thing I've noticed lately, its MUCH easier getting stuck to some malware when you visit a gaming or FS site than it is if you visit a hard core adult site. This is especially true if the FS/gaming site is un-attended or abandoned.
