I've mostly ignored the addition of 'functional' weapons in FS24 ... until getting the FS24-native upgrade to the Azurepoly Jaguar.

It really does add to the immersion of a low-level cross-country mission to have a real target and to have to perform the appropriate switchology in time to whip across the target scattering mayhem in your wake :)

In truth only the bombs really work acceptably and the accuracy isn't good (CGIP = Continually Guessed Impact Point) but choose an airfield as your target and an IP that lines you up to the runway low-level and drop a full set of bombs and you should get a satisfying row of bomb craters along the runway with columns of smoke above. Bomb explosions are a little Hollywood, though you have to try hard to get to see them anyway.
Craters near terrain height-changes can appear in mid-air.

Dive-bombing is limited to 30 deg or less and not particularly accurate, but more practice could improve results, toss bombing not allowed.
Air-to-air missiles are useless against air targets but good against ground targets as pretend unguided AGMs. Sidewinders don't :(

The Martel Anti-Ship/Radar missile has a pretty good 'pop-up' profile and looks good, but no bang.

Switchology tricky, trying to mouse-select tiny points - cheated by mapping some to HOTAS using A&O.
Loading the weapons uses the EFB, not immersive. Wish I could load a standard set in a FLT file (can set weights but don't get weapons).
Can reload in mid-air, good for practicing.

Then tried the Miltech Mirage 2000, again great fun in the low-level bombing of big targets like airfields.
No Hollywood flash but the smoke columns are better. Bomb craters handle terrain heights better.
Dive-bombing also limited to 30 deg or less and not particularly accurate.
Looked like Toss-bombing was allowed but sadly the bomb has no upward trajectory, it just drops as if you had released level.
Better HUD CCIP display, might be slightly more accurate, switchology a bit easier due more modern design.
Some of the delivery options bugged.
Actually loading the weapons more of a pain, using an MFD. Wish I could load a standard set in a FLT file (can set weights but don't get weapons).
Also has flares, essential to not getting into bad habits for when returning to Falcon/DCS. :)
Have to land to reload.
Air to Air missiles no use against air or ground targets. Bigger missile looks good but no use.
Cannon quite entertaining when 'dog-fighting' or just following someone around the Mach Loop, but no effect.

Skyraider next.

Well the SkyRaider is a real Rocketeer - three different sizes from tiny to huge, reasonably accurate and you can see them fly even though no smoke trails. Good fun putting them through open hanger doors and open HAS's :)
All seem to generate the same amount of smoke, could do with a salvo option for the smaller rockets!

Good selection of bombs, including snake eyes but sadly they don't open, don't retard. Same accuracy and effects as the Mirage.

Guns just ear-candy.

Wouldn't you just love a combat flightsim, M$ style with MSFS graphics?

Just sayin'
I would say such a thing exists, but it focuses on graphics that M$ have ignored (and ignores some things M$ has addressed). It is called Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) and it has systems depth far beyond that which is found in M$. Please, don't view this comment as anything other than informative.

And you're right of course. But I said "M$ style" for a reason. M$ combat flight sims don't have the system depth that DCS has. Now if DCS would have a sort of switch to "noob/moron/simpleton" mode, then I would fly it more.

My dream is a simple, modern CFS to just shoot up stuff for when I'm in a bad mood.

Cheers,

Jan

If you want to support an independent developer out of Australia, look into "Nuclear Option" on Steam. My son has been playing this with his friends online since it's release, and the development is constantly updated. Oh and, repaints are encouraged and supported.

"Nuclear Option is a combat flight game developed by Shockfront Studios set on a dynamic and realistic battlefield of the near future. Use an array of advanced weapons to change the course of battles as you intercept bombers, duel fighters, fly under the radar, or unleash the fury of nuclear weapons on enemy formations."

I knew exactly what you meant, but I had to get a plug in for DCS because it truly is a phenomenal simulator. (I will point out for those that don't know, there are air forces in the world that license DCS products for some phases of simulator training, so it has some complexity.) To address your point, I can load up the simulator 15 miles out from the carrier (F/A-18C) and execute a CASE I recovery, park / turn my aircraft on the carrier and launch...all in about 5 to 10 minutes. You can do the same for a BFM, FOX 1, or FOX 3 mission all in about the same time (however, I've usually been killed or ejected....seems like lately I'm more prey than predator). (I think the issue relates to my axis settings...too much input for small movements results in speed bleeding off too quickly.)

There is a learning curve, but once you have the key binds and procedures, it moves quick. There are also many scenarios that I don't use often involving blowing up "high res" vehicles, buildings, etc. Bottom line is that it is not overly time consuming or complex. I'll stop now because I'll hear "wrong forum", so if you want to talk how easy it is to shoot or blow up stuff in DCS...come on over to the DCS Forum (or PM me).

“Once you have the key binds…”

Right up there with “once you build the airplane from raw spruce and kit parts…”

I have so many unflown planes in DCS because you have to redo your HOTAS setup for every dang plane…

As someone refllying classic flight simulators for the https://www.retrodogfight.com/ podcast, I miss when combat sims found the medium between convincing realism and entertainment. DCS is admirable but I wish they’d put 20% of the effort they put into systems simulation into AI and missions.

You can use Axis&OHs with DCS, don't know if that helps.
Presume you've tried Falcon BMS, now with VR support :)
