'The Old "Rowan MiG Alley" Game'ᯓ ✈︎

I started with TFX.

I actually bought my Thrustmaster MK I and a copy of TFX, even before my first computer arrived. When

When Jane's US Navy Fighters became the most advanced combat flight sim back then, I remember we were talking about how it could ever get more realistic, and boy would we be cooking if with ever broke 12-15 FPS. :)

Back then it seemed there was a new sim every few months... Not the case any more.
Not only that, but you could have 8 or 10 of them all loaded at the same time and still have room left on your hard drive. All you need was knowing how to make a boot disk to free up memory. :)

This is the top 30 of my list of 71 flightsims I've owned & flown. That really was the golden era of combat flight simulation.
1. Strike Eagle
2. Pilot Wings
3. TFX
4. Fleet Defender
5. Falcon3.0 Gold
6. Red Baron
7. Aces Over Europe
8. Aces Over The Pacific
9. Wings Of Glory
10. US Navy Fighters
11. US Marine Fighters
12. Jane’s Advanced Tactical Fighters
13. Jane’s NATO Fighters
14. SU-27 Flanker
15. Jane's Longbow
16. Jane's Longbow II
17. Jane's Israeli Air Force
18. Jane's F-15
19. Jane's WW II Fighters
20. A-10 Cuba (1996)
21. Flight Unlimited II
22. MSFS 5.0
23. MSFS 5.1
24. MSFS 98
25. Falcon4
26. Flying Corps Gold
27. EF2000
28. Pacific Air Wars
29. Red Baron II
30. Fly!

IMO It was after this point in time that combat flightsims became less interesting and somewhat sterile. One exception would be Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, which was an excellent addition to the F4.0 family.

What a list! I remember having 8, 10, 15, 16 and 28!

Talking of Rowan, who created Mig Alley, I was heavily involved in the re-development of another of their sims, Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory. The rights were bought out by A2A before they were even A2A and were known as 'Shockwave Productions' back then. I spent literally hours every evening trying to fix the broken multiplayer module along with a few other dedicated team members. The sim was an amazing standalone concept but the multiplayer side was badly porked partly because Microsoft abandoned the very flaky multiplayer module they put out when they realized it would never work and moved on. Unfortunately Rowan had jumped into the module in a big way and it was so deeply embedded into the core code that it proved impossible to use anything else.

If I went past #30, BOBII was #56, right after #55 Falcon 4.0 Allied Force. :)

What! No B-17 The Mighty Eighth? Granted not by Rowan but still at the time a darn good simulator
It's on there listed as B-17 II. Not sure why I have named that. And it was a great sim for the time. The only issue I had was all the mission surviving B-17s crashing while landing.

I also just realized I don't have B-17 the Mighty Eighth Redux listed. That bumps the list to 72.

Hey Forest,

B-17 TME was also B-17 II as there was an earlier version of B-17, I don't recall the exact title of the first release, but it was pretty cryptic as air sims go. TME was the second iteration of the series. I also have redux now installed and using steam ... the dev's just released a new blog on the changes they've made to the environment.
