Dino's F14D Beta II Shots

It's gonna blow minds, lol, I had so much fun, threw on Kenny Loggins "Highway to the Danger Zone", put on a plastic toy flighter helmet and sat on the couch in boxers breaking the virtual sound barrier, lol, can it get any better?
When i get this wicked Tomcat on my computer , I wont need Kenny Loggins "Highway to the Danger Zone" when my brother visits , he willl come in with his own sound track jet noise and whssssing sounds with even a grunt as pulls some 'G's

Bob , guess the only thing missing would be an ejector seat !:icon_lol:

Dino , really looking forward to this :applause:

Having been an AME (Egress mech) for 20 yrs in the USN, I actually thought about getting an old ejection seat for my simulator. But the darn things are so expensive. Back when the govt. retrofitted all the A-7Es with NACES (just before they were all sent to the boneyard) I probably could've gotten an ESCAPAC from DRMO (Defense Reutilization Management Office) in Jacksonville, FL, but just didn't act on it. They are worth some bucks now.

A working ejection seat would be cool! LOL :ernae:

It is W.I.P. beta 2. Dino is still working on the project.

Details ---gear and missiles in screeny.

My first freeware FRAPS FPS Benchmark results:

1st beta 2 test
2009-05-30 13:39:49 - fsx
Frames: 7814 - Time: 292434ms - Avg: 26.721 - Min: 19 - Max: 38

open sea, water mid2X, weather has clouds and gusty winds, fleet in view the entire time, DX9, locked spot view, wire caught gauge displayed entire time, display game framerate setting unlimited

27 fps average over 4 minutes 52 seconds of slow approach from 10 nautical miles to trap at 125 KIAS at a rate of 533ft/minute, about 9 feet per second at deck contact catching One Wire.

Using water at low2X or high1X and clear weather should result in an average much higher. But my pc is not a powerhouse so testing on a weaker system shows good fps, in my opinion.

Thanks for the stats, but they would mean more in comparison to something else. Do the same flight in the default Accel. F-18, for example, and compare the FPS. Without that comparison, it is difficult to guage the FPS impact of this beta.

Aye, aye, Sir.

Actually that's been done both for beta 1 and beta 2 but not posted on any forum nor the beta blogs. Mention of comparisons was brief in an email but it concerned beta 1 so, yes, Dino is aware and beta 2 tests have just begun. Some testers are more concerned with MP, some with the flight model, some with painting, some with the VC swithches and gauges, and so on, but there isn't any list of assignments that I know of.

The main point of the post was that the beta 2 runs well on a pc of low power. So very much depends on game settings and each user must reach their own conclusions. Even a comparison test isn't perfect. The screenshot here shows 121.4 fps in the red info lines but it was just luck the screeny caught it. My seetings had clear weather and water at high 1X so that is a low setting.

I don't consider the red info lines to be so accurate so I use the freeware FRAPS FPS Benchmark program.

I shall do a fresh test with different aircraft although that means I'll have to stop my current 2 tests for a little time. Not a problem. :guinness::icon29: So, Ill be back but I've got some chores to do, you know, go outside to see if the planet is still there and if any one remembers me.

Thanks for your appreciation

All,

thanks for your interest and appreciation. I have to confess that, while there are some issues to be solved, I am pretty happy with the quality level of the Tomcat.

Most of the issues highlighted here at SOH are being worked on. The public release should be around 10-15 June...

As for the FPS, it is definitely a "heavy" model. The extrernal model is roughly twice as complex as the default Hornet, while the VC is 3 times more complex....so slower machines are likely to take a hit. I'm sorry for that...but this project was though to be a "maximum detail" model from the beginning. There is some room for optimization here and there, but not much - nor I am sure I will find the time to do it.
Anyway, I hope you'll like it and have fun.

settings for both tests
open sea, water mid2X, weather has clouds, fleet in view the entire time, DX9

Accel default F/A-18C Hornet
2009-05-31 13:19:00 - fsx
Frames: 6253 - Time: 262005ms - Avg: 23.866 - Min: 17 - Max: 35
4 minutes 22 seconds to trap from 10 nm

Dino's freeware T-45C Goshawk
2009-05-31 13:33:06 - fsx
Frames: 9825 - Time: 346149ms - Avg: 28.384 - Min: 19 - Max: 42
5 minutes 46 seconds to trap from 10nm

previous post on the Tomcat beta 2
2009-05-30 13:39:49 - fsx
Frames: 7814 - Time: 292434ms - Avg: 26.721 - Min: 19 - Max: 38

A basic fps comparison at this point as I do it but in the end downlaod the freeware Tomcat and see for yourself but it's ok for me. I can lower the water to high 1X and use a smalller fleet. The fleet has 8 ships plus a carrier and grouped closely. So, there are lots of variables affecting fps.

:guinness::icon29::ernae:cheers :guinness::guinness: hope that helps a bit, I mean the tests

Hmm, I don,t know what to make out of this post..In Bob,s shots it looks like an awesome model , in Wilys shots, well, it looks quite bad..How can the glass texture be so totaly different, for example ?

Not sure if this is the right place, but here is a quick report for the external model.

First, a few screen shots: (The reason she looks so dark is because I was using the Russian Bloom Effect)

DinoBeta2-2.jpg

DinoBeta2-3.jpg

Issues I found:
1. Like the FSX Accel. Hornet, the flaps will not go to the full position while in flight.

2. When selecting the JDAMS via Shift-E-3, part of the external model, the cover for the refueling prove disapears.

3. Canopy seems a little too blue from what I've seen of F-14D's

4. Other than that, she is really fun! Amazing flight model!

Thanks Dino for the amazing aircraft!

Regards, Diego

Correct place

@Bananabob

I forgot to say that those shots were great. I'm waiting to see your repaints :)

@wilycoyote4

Interesting FPS results. On my system (i7920 + X295), however, the Hornet is blazing fast - while the Tomcat is not so great in terms of FPS. Did a couple of tests with FRAPS but not as detailed as you did.

@Diego (and in general)
Well, this is not the right place to submit Beta test reports. Readme file in Beta 2 build has the information needed to report correctly. By the way I saw your email but had no time to reply.

1 - That is because flaps are "maneuver" flaps (i.e. help in controlling the plane, usually driven by a flight computer). AFAIK it is 100% correct on the Hornet. In the real Tomcat, only the outer section should behave like this, while the "inner" part is a proper "auxiliary" flap. I mapped all the flaps to maneuver as in this way I can prevent flap extension when wings are swept (real plane has -natuarally-interlocks).

2 -Fixed in the latest internal build

3 -Never seen one from real :)

4 -I'm glad you're having fun :)

Now, back to debugging...

That's too bad about the flaps Dino. Understandable though. We wouldn't want the flaps to come down with the wings swepped back, but boy would she look pretty if she could extend them fully on approach

Good point yago9. I'm puzzled but will look into it.

I have all AA and AF maxed out and a GeForce 285 with an i7 processor also, might make a difference, not sure? I'm using Windows XP Pro with SP3 also.

Yikes, faint, try to breathe, medic...............no! make it a pretty nurse for the kiss of life, gasp. Oh, no problem, only a touch of wind.

What a pc. :medals::medals::medals::ernae: well, could be a big factor, also my editor ? And I transfer the screenys from my desktop to a laptop for the internet.

AF is max at 16x. AA is 4x edge-detect at 12x sample, I'll try AA 4x box at 4x sample.
cheers:guinness::guinness:

Yeah, it was a gift , or I'd be bragging about it all the time, LOL! :ernae:
