Having MS publish FSX's source code in about one or two years when the sim's "shelf life" has run out.


Advantages for MS:
- A continued interest in copies of FSX since it would be still required as a base for all the enhancements done with the source code.
- No need for a (rushed and expensive) development of a next-gen Flight Simulator.
- Improvement of the company's image (after all, they canned our only hope for a FSXI...).


Advantages for us:
- A constantly evolving simulator with nearly endless possiblities (Native x64 builds, better support for modern hardware, a *real* Dx10 mode, more autogen, etc...)
- Some annoying bugs could finally get fixed.


Popular examples for published source codes and a resulting modding community:
Freespace 2. Ten years old and still going strong. No real successor.
Enemy Engaged: Comanche Hokum. Nine years old and still just as popular as its inofficial successor.


Yet realistically, the hopes for this happening are slim at best.
But one may dream...
 
I don't think MS canned flight simulation althogether and I suspect a new version of the sim in the future.
 
I don't think we've seen the last of MFS either.

However, making the source code for FSX open source would also be a very interesting choice, especially for the fanbase. And Microsoft could adapt the tricks people implement in FSX open source for their own new flight simulator! :O

Not sure of the future.. if it comes back or not.Some people though look like they were retained and maybe there will be a future. Only time and the economy I guess will answer that.

I just want a brand new I7 920 to WRECK FSX, but it doesn't. Someone needs to fix that.

Well we can surely rule out getting the source code...as old as CFS2 is... they will not give us the code for it. I asked hehehe.

Microsoft needs to go bankrupt...*then* we'll get the source code for sure.

Now you´r talking amigo....that rotten weasel of Bill is so rotten in dollars that he now is an angel of good deeds.....after all the evil he brought to the planet!!!!! a real devil that guy.......St. Pedro will have a long talk with this diety when he takes the elevator......FSX is just a passer by in the PC world. Keep your marbles and eventually you will be playing with a sim much more real and enjoyable.....it´s around the corner of some enlighted mind or minds...its inevitable as batman use to say......................:pop4::pop4:
 
I can assure you, they will NEVER release the source code. First, the code is MASSIVE!!! Its the culmination of over 10 years in flight sim programming. It surpasses Windows Vista in size of its code. Also, its size is only rivled by its complexity. When Aces closed, its office employed 150 people, and not one of them knew everything about the engine. I even heard 10+ year vets saying "wow, I didnt know it could do that!" when talking about features. If it did happen, 3rd party dev's would need years to even disect it, and that cost's money.

Flight Sim is not dead. Dont count it out. Also, if it went to the "Live" platform does not mean its going to Xbox. Every MS game has some form of Live support, for things like DLC, and multiplayer. Though a FS MMO may not work, having some multi-player features would be great.
 
If they dropped the source code in our laps right now, it'd take 10 years to make heads or tails of it. Every tried to just step into somebody else's code? It can be a real nightmare. I'd rather someone just code a new FS from scratch, thanks. Y'know, since we're speculating and all...

Control, maybe yes, but eliminate? Without 3rd party FS series would be dead for a long time :)

If they go this route they´ll prove how dirty they really are.....a monopoly which I think is against the law in the US....well, laws today are for old people and stupid ones so it seems......:gameoff::gameoff:

it's already been directly stated. it's not speculation, it's fully intended. there were some folks on here before the outhouse crashed that talked of taking part in a survey that swore them to secrecy. that survey spoke of just such a venture in detail. phil has also talked about microsoft's intention to go this route. it's old news
 
Err... I'm fairly sure monopoly law doesn't cover having total control of add-ons to your software, otherwise Apple would be f***ed for starters. Not to mention the IL-2 series of Sims where you can only get officially approved add-on aircraft.
You couldn't even accuse MS of abusing a monopoly position as it'd be a new version of FS and there's X-Plane as a civilian competitor and a number of Military Sims available.

Check with the European Union concerning this firm who is constantly in hot water and getting fined for their unlawful proceedings in the old continent....they apparently have a loose loose op around those parts...good for them...:gameoff:

They've been found guilty of abusing their position in the OS market to push IE on people, that's not the same as saying they have and are abusing their position in the Flight Simulator market. You're comparing apples and oranges.

Gee, why is it always about money with you guys?

If the source code went public it doesn't mean you'd automatically have to make a commercial endeavor of decyphering and improving it.

Just let those who are interested tinker with the tons of data. If there can be made improvements, fine, if not no harm done either.

And I bet my grandmom that at least a good of the data of the source code is related to things of secondary importance, like the terrain (mesh, landclass, etc...) and aircraft. Cut these out and you should have a maybe still very huge, but more easily manageable pile of code.

The sad part is, a good portion of this is not speculation. There are plenty of third party developers right here in this forum that were once and are somewhat still VERY in the know. Their involvement in the creation of Microsoft products has helped nurture this industry as we know it.

I learned back in ACES' heyday to read between the lines when some of the more noted developers were talking, and you could get an idea about what was going on.

I'm almost positive that many of these people had limited talks with ACES when the serious changes were going on.

I haven't heard anything here that I didn't read in an ACES' member's blog, or what wasn't released by Microsoft themselves. Information also came our way in the form of job hirings and surveys by Microsoft.
