A-1 Skyraider

What's available? FS9 or CFS2. I have the Razbam payware A-1. It's of course exellent, but i am wondering about freeware ones.

Alphasim has a freeware CFS2 Skyraider...actually a few of them (A-1H, A-1J, AD-4). They should be in the ALphaoldies section...these will not work in FS9....that dreaded no prop thing.

And there is another one....I'll have to dig it up off of my archive discs...Ed Wilson.....works in CFS2 and FS9....the modeling isn't as sharp as the Alphaoldies one...but frame rates are much much better.

OW has it pegged for CFS 2 Freeware Skyraiders. Fox 4 is probably the best short of Payware.

The Alphasim Freeware Skyraider looses its prop when used as an AI aircraft in CFS 2.

Of course for Payware, it's RAZMAB to be sure.

Unless the Fox Four Skyraider has been updated (at one point TangoRomeo was working on doing that) the plane is nearly impossible to repaint. Lots and lots of parts that are not individually mapped and that are colored via the MDL material settings.

Seen those A-1 attack scenes in Mel Gibson's "We were soldiers" Jagd?
Pretty good I think. Also have some of the most intence battle scenes i've seen from Vietnam.

Morton,

Yes, that was a great movie. The army unit in the movie, the 7th US Cavalry, is one of the most storied units in the US Army. It stood up following the Civil War and fought on the Frontier throughout the Indian Wars. It then became a regiment in the 1st US Cavalry Division where it still is today. From the Little Big Horn River under the command of General (Brevet) George Armstrong Custer to Operation Iraqi Freedom today, it's been in the thick of it.

I think my favorite Skyraider scenes were in "Flight of the Intruder."

In real life, I saw Sandys (USAF radio call sign and common nickname) flying from Da Nang in action over Thua Tien Provence. We also called them Spads because they were so old and such an anachronism in what we thought was a modern war.

Did you know that the designer of the Skyraider, Ed Heineman, was the same man that designed the SBD Dauntless of WWII fame and the A-4 Skyhawk of Vietnam fame?

For a good movie with great Skyraider footage, rent or buy this movie.

I was just about time to put on the SE Asia Camo

I was just thinking it was time to head for the jungle....

I started out in CFS2 with the GZR_A1-h skyraider over at simviation.

It is still had fairly good eye catching detail........yet slightly dated.......but free......

Oh yeah, the GZR version. Forgot about that one.

Obio: I see what you mean about painting the FoxFour bird. Hard to see what the mapping actually is from the textures.

Yeah, as near as I can figure it, I will be the last when I retire in 4 years, 2 months, EXACTLY. Effective 28 February 2014, placed on the retired list 1 March 2014.

You may very well be the last of us when you retire DD.

It would be interesting to see just how many of us are still around. there are none left in my current unit nor were there any in my past couple of units. At the battalion and lower level, it's even getting hard to find anyone that served during Desert Storm One.

All the ones other than you are older than me that I have run into. Saw a CW5 aviator week before Christmas in the DFAC. He and I and possibly one other are the only ones left at NGB. Since I had a 13 year break in service while doing narcotics investigations, I don't run out of service time like a lot of others when I run out of age. I will be in 18 year lock-in before I turn 60, and current law is that we can all go until age 62, with waivers possible up to 64, I think.

I still feel youthful and healthy. Still can do a full 3 part APFT with very respectable scores and have a flat tummy......(those danged "love handles" almost get me though. Glad I have a football neck).

FoxFour Skyraider

I went looking for the FoxFour Skyraider, and after wasting a lot of time looking, finally found that aircraft as an AD2 AI in the Red Star campaign download. I was fairly disgruntled by that time, but why discard the investment? So I forged ahead. After changing it to flyable in the AIR file and dropping in a suitable panel from SimV by Mike Eustace, I found it to be a very nice airplane. It is certainly not just an AI.

Upgrade?

Has anyone asked the FoxFour folks about doing an upgrade on the AD2 AI? It only needs a completed VC and a few tweaks. (I don't mean to oversimplify, as a VC and tweaks might really be a lot more complicated than I can understand.)

Fox Four KWCFS2_AD-2_Skyraider

I had not flown the KWCFS2_AD-2_Skyraider over at Fox Four.....untill today.

Here are some screen shots.........

It is a step up from the GZR...........with more 3D parts and shine'ability

The dark blue colors hide some of the detail in these screen.......I flew in late afternoon ........sim time...

The fRs of the GZR bird are better however. BTW: A little bird told me that Fang's (FoxFour) skyraider is in the process of being upgraded, perhaps the LODs & texture mapping will be upgraded as well.
