John Travolta uses his 707 for Haiti relief

Good for Travolta. And besides being a all round good guy and one hell of a pilot, he's a dam good humanitarian too.

To TheOptomist..... as "Pilot In Command" he has the right to wear Captains bars, and besides that he owns the 707. His copilot probably wears 2nd Officer bars cause John says he can. If he can't wear them, according to you, then any airline pilot out there hasn't the right to wear theirs. Tell all of them that if you dare...face to face. Then look up at them from the floor. All of them laughing at you all at once will probably knock ya on yer kester.

Laughing at me? No, laughing with me, at this wannabe who flashes his stripes around with no right to do so. I'm not sure whether your last snyde comment was an attempt at a humiliation, but perhaps you could look up the ATPL before you post next time. Travolta has a PPL, and is only (and ever has) been rated as SIC on the 707.

Time out everyone. :isadizzy:
I guess some of us forgot about this....

About 8 years ago, in 2002, Mr. Travolta became the "Global Goodwill Ambassador" for Qantas.
He even went as far as to get his First Officer certificate for a 747, and eventually flew a few routes across the Pacific.

Nope, he just completed the Boeing 747 simulator program. He doesn't have a type rating (nor an ATPL) at all.

He was presented with wings and stripes by the Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon, as he was in fact employed by Qantas to do the multiple city tour.

He's an Quantas ambassador, not a pilot.

The 707 Mr. Travolta owns is a former Qantas bird.
That 707 was repainted in Qantas livery, and Mr. Travolta was Pilot In Command for the entire 13 city tour, at various stops around the world.

Nope, he can't be PIC on the 707.

At the time in 2002, Mr. Travolta had in excess of 5000 hours, both personal and professional flying time.
Mr. Travolta continues to own and fly his 707 to this day.

He has no commercial rating.
Unless you want to count 'being on an aircraft when it's in the air' as piloting time.

Oh and he got his license in 1974, using every dime he made to get his commercial rating.
In the lean times between acting jobs, he would be PIC on a private jet for charter jobs.

Nope, he could cost share on the PPL and nothing else.

So, Mr. Travolta has earned his stripes. 'Nuff said. :salute:

Nope, doesn't have an ATPL, isn't an airline captain, hasn't earned his stripes.

Who cares...

Pretty cool of him to be out there working hard on shipping food and supplies, spending tons on fuel, time, employees...

I salute you John.

I like that suit too..

Come on guys....this thread was started to give a man credit for going the extra mile to help the people of Haiti...not to argue if he has earned the right to wear some silly stripes on his shoulder. I could care less if he dresses up like Pippy Longstockings while he flies his 707 to deliver food, medicine and helping hands to those in need. He owns the plane, he paid for the fuel, he flew the plane, he landed the plane, he helped unload the plane....because of his efforts tons of food and medical supplies and medical personnel are now on the ground in Haiti where those things are so badly needed. That is the long and short of it...let's leave it at that and move on.

Couple hundred thousand people died, some guy decided to do something good and some of you can only talk about stripes...get real.

It's true I don't care if he arrives wearing the ceremonial uniform of an Air Chief Marshall but I imagine the people of Haiti would rather the weight taken up by the Scientology ministers was taken up by extra tents instead. But I guess it makes a nice change from Christians. Good on ya John :salute:

When I get my 707, I'm going to design my own captain's uniform, and I'm going to put a sign on the door that says "Capt. Paul".

Good job, John T...

Couple hundred thousand people died, some guy decided to do something good and some of you can only bitch about other people's posts....get real.

I'll talk about it if I want, if you don't want to read it feel free to avert your gaze.

The people of Haiti are not concerned about what religions are showing up. They are needing all the help they can get regardless of where it is coming from or who is flying it in. Personally I think it's neat that a vintage Quantas 707 is helping out.

Anymore dumb comments and this thread will be locked...

Probably better locked.... Everytime TheOptimist posts something, a part of me dies inside....

Kudos to John... I hate Scientology, but love Travolta and greatly respect someone who's self convictions are stronger than the push from the public and the media to think differently... Same can be said of Mr. Cruise...

Captain's bars don't denote piloting ability or license rating, just rank.
They're just that, bars.

So the man owns the plane.
He's obviously got the hours and training in.
And what if the man has a pilot next to him who is rated, so he's legal?
Fact is that man still parks his butt in the left seat and controls the plane, he's PIC. It's his responsibility.
Sometimes a man's actions and deeds go beyond what is written on a piece of paper.

So frankly if he wants to wear plaid on the flight deck, what damn concern is it of any of us at all?
He's earned it in spades, IMHO.

Agreed. My apologies, Sir. I'm moving on.

I applaud someone who is using his aviation asset to help others.
The people in Haiti need the continued blessings and support in the years to come.
But I am also going to applaud Mr. Travolta on continuing to be a positive ambassador for aviation.

Unless they say something you disagree with and then you want them censored or silenced? :engel016:

I'm not standing up for TheOptimist (surely an ironic choice of name for someone so negative) but come on!

Touche 6297J, (If that comment was directed at myself and not Scientologists) That was a bit of a contradiction there. I am just always surprised that there is seemingly always someone who will belittle the contributions of others.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Not to keen at the downward path this has taken..

The guy did a good thing ..

I wear a costume every night..(not telling):mixedsmi:

I've not belittled anyone's contribution in the slightest. I've belittled the fact he wears captain's stripes when by my (and just about all pilot's definitions) he isn't a captain.

Osama Bin Laden could make a hefty donation, which I would appreciate, but it doesn't mean I have to agree with his views and methods.

Regardless this is my last post in this thread.

Ì admire JT as an actor,a pilot and as a humanitarian.....religious belief does not enter the equation to me once their heart is in the right place. I can't imagine any of the Haitian people who JT is endeavouring to help, gave a damn if he was wearing 4 stripes or this white suit...;)

Just my 0.02c :)

The man did a good deed and I honor him for it. Anything else is nit picking of the lowest order.

when i asked about that i had no idea i was going to stir up a big thing:redface:
i just didn't know, so i asked.

I could care less if he dresses up like Pippy Longstockings

ok, well, here is where i have to draw the line. i can accept alot of things, but if travolta ever dresses as pippy longstocking (who i can't stand) while flying, and i find out about, there's gonna be trouble. :173go1:
