Flight dynamics editing?

Navy Chief

Senior Member
Is there a way to edit aircraft flight dynamics within FSX, such as a tool included with FSX? I know of the software Air Wrench, but wondered if there are any other alternatives.

Thanks.

What exactly are you interested in editing? Most tweaks can easily be done within the aircraft.cfg or in some cases that and the airfile, using AIRED.

Well, what I often see problems with are aircraft that (when rolling down the runway) have the tendency to takeoff on its own..... before I even pull back on the stick. Am thinking there must be an adjustment to parameters somewhere. Also, in some aircraft, when I make a turn, they stall WAY too easily, and am sure that cannot be realistic.

I downloaded the airfile manager previously posted about. Indeed, it appears to be capable of doing all this, but I have NO idea how/what to do! It looks so complicated!

Indeed, the things you mention appear to be at the more complicated end of the spectrum. As an amateur, I would probably look to adjust things like cruise lift scalar, early lift off may have to do with incorrect weight or too much flap lift or even too much trim; stalling characteristics and aoa may have to do with wing size and square footage or crusie lift settings. Also, it may have a lot to do with the way the realism sliders are set up in the sim. I think part of the problem lies on the fact that every system is different and everyone's settings are different, so when someone builds an airfile, they build it according to their own system and settings. Unfortunately, that may not play very well on my system with my settings (gosh, I hope that makes some sense). Most airfiles out there have been copied over and over for all these years. If one looks at and compares configs and airfiles, you'll see a lot of duplication.

That's why I usually stay away from trying to correct the most difficult aspects of a flight dynamic problem. If it's something that won't take any easy fix, what I have been known to do instead is to replace current aircraft.cfg and/or airfiles with those that more closely match the problem aircraft, only without the problems.

I did that most recently with that Wildcat that came out not too long ago. I swapped out both files and it made all the difference in handling characteristics. It's funny after years of doing this hobby, you can tell almost immediately if the aircraft flight dydnamics feel right. Same goes for engine sounds. If there's a particular aircraft in question maybe we can solve the problem together. Sorry I can't offer a more useful solution.

BR's,
mal

Thanks Mal,

I am not a pilot, but there's times when I just instinctively feel that the flight dynamics of some aircraft just don't feel right. Such as when a aircraft's wheels lift off the runway WAY too prematurely, without any stick input.

yeah, either that or you can't get the darn thing to lift off at all! :icon_lol:

Oh when that happens to me, I try adjusting the trim....... If that doesn't work, I often make that particular aircraft go "bye bye" from my aircraft folder!!!

Extreme measures eh?

Trouble with doing that is you may deprive yourself of having a plane that you really like just on account of it needing some tweaking.

Next time you get a plane you like but needs config help or if you have one right now, let me know and we'll see if we can't get her fixed up. I'm happy to help out if I can.

If you feel more comfortable sending me a PM, please do.

Thanks for the offer; I just might take ya up on it sometime! NC

Aircraft Airfile Manager is a good program, especially as it shows many of the hex tables and curves to be displayed as a graph and be edited by base 10 entries that are intuitive. There are also some general brief explanations of the functions of many entries and often a range of typical values supplied.

For those not wanting to make an exploratory career out of this I highly reccomend Airwrench at the cost of a couple of beers at the local watering hole.

Yeah +1 for Airwrench
One of the fun things you can do with airwrench is generate a virgin airfile. What you do is edit the aircraft.cfg with all the prams for your particular project.then move or delete the .air file, next right click in the aircraft's folder, then new, then text document, then rename it whatever the orig air file name was with the .air extension.Fire up airwrench load the aircraft as normal go through and check that the data is close and make any adjustments, then save.this will generate a new virgin airfile it will still need a bit of tweaking but at least most of the important stuff is done for you :)

Another really usefull Jerry put in Airwrench is the graphic presentations of many of the parameters such as rate of climb vrs speed etc.

I haven't used the latest versions, but the continual improvement is impressive. The only thing to be aware of is the program throws EVERYTHING out and starts over with a new complete aircraft calculation each run. If you have manually adjusted some parameter, it will be un adjusted......

I dont use airwrench myself. It makes a few mistakes here and there, and its isolated to freeware use.. But anyone that does it the way i do, is either an engineer or insane.. I believe i fall into the second category there ::lol:;..

Either way, your planes are a pleasure to fly.
