Can anyone guess ...

Hi!

Very good progress

an aspect like the real :jump:
I did have to redraw a couple of flattens down around Apra harbor because your mesh and Rhumbas didn't quite jibe in a couple of places

It's because of that fact I draw any new scenery on lod9 mesh even if later the will be used on Rhumba's lod8 all that give the boundaries of the coasts to give to not use flattens exception for some very localized sceneries like ports which are ,today in 2010 ,somewhat different ,by their devellopement ,that how they has been in the 40's years.

Still messing around with NW field on Guam. It and North Field (Andersen) are so large that it is hard to come up with an efficient texturing strategy that doesn't sacrifice too much performance for more detail or vice versa. I am sure many understand the dilemma. So, I am experimenting.

The last picture I posted was a version of NW Field where I used 4 256sqpix texture bmps in 4 polygons- they divide the airfeld up into 4 adjacent quadrants. The results are OK but the adjacent edges of the polys are behaving a little weird visually. I tried that because a single 512sqpix texture bmp on a single polygon stretched the details a little too thin and visually the overall effect was just not pleasing. The 4 256sqpix polys look great away from those interior adjacent edges- but those interior adjacent edges are still a prob. Anyhow, what I think I may opt for is a single poly with a 1024sqpix texture bmp. It looks great all over and on my rig anyway- the performance hit is not too noticeable.

I attach a screenie of the latest single poly with 1024sqpix look.

Lookin' good MR.

Are you using Rhumba's latest mesh?

Hiya Dave, at the moment, in the above screen shot, I have a custom lod9 Marianas mesh loaded that JP made and "loaned" to me. Rhumba's mesh is lod8. The difference is very subtle- but noticeable. The scenery fits fine with either mesh however.

Here is a side by side showing the difference. Everything is just a bit better defined using JP's LOD9.

In case anyone is curious:

Here are a couple of screenies that kinda show some of the building process. The first is just a pic of the FSSC layout window zoomed into a portion of the full blown version of Guam's NW Field. The second is a pics of what I call the "all-faded" mask- all of the roads, taxiways, runways and hardstands- roughed up and faded in. The third shows the mask for just those areas getting an asphalt surface texture.

BTW, I made a mistake that I have yet to correct and it shows quite clearly in the asphalt mask. Can anyone find it?

5 Airfields on Guam? I hadn't realised that. Woudl you by any chance have information as to what units were based on what field?

I'm really looking forward to the finish of this major project. Been fascinating to watch it's development unfold. :)

Lovely beaches....

My God, those beaches look incredible!

Ever since I had to switch off the stock beaches, streams and roads in order to use correctly Rhumba's mesh and watermasks, I was starting to miss them...

I think it's an impossible wish that someday someone will come up with all the Pacific beaches following Rhumba's mesh and watermasks correctly.

But I'll keep hoping.....

Splendid job MaskRider, I can't believe the quantum quality leap since your first blended airfields of few years ago!

Cheers!

Yeah. The five fields were Orote Point (Apra Harbor), Harmon Field and Agana (Japanese- Tiyan Drome), Northwest Field and North Field.

In addition to Abandoned and Little Known Airfields listed by sc7500, I have also found the following links pretty helpful:

39th Bomber Group website- they were at North Field

Woah!

Hey MR, you've outdone yourself again! You just might need a bigger island. :)

These are looking mighty fine. :applause:

BTW, would the asphalt mask boo boo be that disconnect smack dab in the middle? :kilroy:

Hiya Slats! Yep! That is it! :salute:

I really should just correct it. Don't even need to change the mask really- just do a little touching up in the final putting together of the layers.

To Pips, WRT your question I ran across this very helpful Wikipedia entry yesterday:

United States Army Air Forces in the Central pacific Area

The above article only covers the 4 USAAF Fields. Prior to the war and after US recapture, Orote Point was an MCAS. Its operations were consolodated with those of NAS Agana in 1946. Here is a useful NPS website giving info about history and the units- American and Japanese- that were stationed at Orote.

Guam Project Progress:

Just about ready to start on:

1. USAF Harmon Field: aka Depot Field and
2. USAF Agana Field: aka Guamu Dai Ni- Guam No. 2- by the Japanese; aka NAS Agana (Brewer) by the US Navy post WWII and now known as Guam International.

I think I have enough info now to get the 3 runways involved with these two fields located correctly and also now have a pretty fair idea what the taxiway-hardstand layout looked like. Once these last 2 Guam airfields are done, the only remaining task of the Guam sub-project of my Marianas project it will be to hook everything up with some roads using G2K. I think I will release Rota and Guam at that point before moving on to Saipan and Tinian.

Update

Finally got the runways and roads around Agana and Tumon Bays where they belong. The twin runways at NAS Agana were not too tough. The only guess work was determining where the original lengths of 8400 feet began and ended on the new 10K+ foot runways.

Harmon (Depot Field) was another matter. The runway and most traces of the taxiways and hard stands have been subsumed into the Harmon Industrial Park. But after diligent searching I finally came up with enough useful images to get them pretty much nail it down- figuring where everything was located in relation to the roads- which have stayed pretty much the same over the years- was key.

Anyhow like I said before- the 5 five airfields on Guam definitely took up their fair share of real estate!

Outstanding!

With two major airfields in the north of the Island, it must have been a very impressive sight watching the B-29's getting airborne for a mission.
