We have wheels again!

Friday, we sent our "beloved" 1996 Chevy Corsica to the junk yard...which is where it needed to be. Got $200 from the junk yard for it...which is $199.95 more than it was worth as a vehicle.

Today, thanks to a friend of my sister-in-law, we have a new set of wheels. Rosco had a minivan for sale and being a friend and new business partner to my sis-in-law, he was willing to allow us to make payments on the van..seeing as all we had to our name was the $200 from the junking of the Corsica. $200 today, and a hundred a month until it is paid off...unless we can kick more out each month.

The vehicle: 1994 Plymouth Grand Voyager LE. 3.3 liter V-6. 200 thousand miles...but the van has been very well maintained and gently used. Needs a few things here and there, but nothing major. Ran a bit rough on the way home, but it hasn't been driven for about 7 months. Dark blue and with gold ground effects...Go Michigan! Not that I am a Michigan fan, or really give 2 cents for football, but since my sis-in-law is a diehard OSU fan, I am going to have to slap a few Michigan stickers on the van just to get her goat.

Won't be able to drive the van for a couple weeks...have to wait for pay day to get it registered and insured. But it is nice having wheels again.

Hello Mr. OBIO. I am happy you have a new van. My Mom will pay off her CRV in 3 months. Now, she is thinking of getting me a car. My Pink Barbie Car has been in my closet for a long time and I am too big to fit in. Pretty soon I will need a real car. I am thinking of a white car with beautiful shinny tires and drives fast. In 7 years my car will be paid off then I can drive it. I can pay it through my allowance every week. I don't spend it. I save it. A Chevy is a good car. My Dad has a Chevy, I forgot how it is called, but it runs fast and the seats warm up. It has a window on the roof and has OnStar. It cannot auto-Pilot though. But it is a cool car. My Mom and Dad they are clean Freak so they keep their cars real clean everyday. I cannot make a mess if I eat inside.

Bravo.. Glad to hear this..I hope she serves you very well..

I have no car, Just my Harley..
And during the winter I walk alot...:jump:

But it could be alot worse I could live in Alaska..:icon_lol:

Oh, the Harley is a Ball in the snow..Too Much Fun..:jump:
I enjoy seeing peoples faces as I go by sideways..and looking very Pleased..:jump:
Great when you lock the Brakes at 30-40 mph, it tends to slide in different directions each time..:isadizzy:

After sitting that long and running rough. I'd suggest changing the fuel filter. And run a can of Seafoam (Auto parts stores like Napa or Autozone should have it) through the engine. Do a search on You-tube to on seafoam to see how to use it.

Otherwise, congrats.

Congrats on the wheels! My mother in law is on her second Dodge Grand Caravan. Her first one had almost 300,000 on it when she traded it on the one she has now. We sometimes borrow it for trips to Memphis.

I'd change the oil and filter while I was at it too. That way you know what you've got in that department.

OBIO~ I'm so happy for you & Deb! I have no doubt that with a little TLC, you'll have the van in tip top shape. Thanks for sharing the good news!

Seeing as how I have two weeks to wait until we have the money to have the tags transferred over from the Corsica and to get the van insured...I have two weeks to tinker on the van. I have some stuff I bought for the Corsica....which I obviously don't need know...and will be able to take it back the Advanced Auto for store credit. About $75 worth. That will buy the new front brake pads, a new air cleaner, new wiper blades, and some other small tune up stuff. And I will be painting an apartment for the land lord....that should bring in 2 to 3 hundred bucks to go toward paying the van off.

Little Chacha...I got a laugh when you said that your dad's car can't auto-pilot. That was funny!

Brian...will look into the seafoam. And the van will be getting an oil change and new plugs and wires within the next few weeks. Along with what ever tune up stuff I can get with the store credit from the Corsica return stuff.

I'll get some pics taken tomorrow and post them....the van is surprisingly clean for a $950 vehicle that was used to haul around a family with 7 kids. And I got my Marvin the Martian window stickers put on it to really make the van MINE.

Congrats OBIO!

Its great to have wheels again... I was without wheels for a long time a while back. Made me really think about how important transportation really is. I am babying this thing to the max!

Congrats on the new vehicle. Hopefully you get more use out of this than the Corsica. The Chrysler Co. minivans were always pretty good. My parents bought a 1996 brand new and it finally kicked the can at over 300,000 miles, and that was without recieving regular maitenance and all. So I imagine if they are taken care of they would last quite a long time.

Did some more cleaning on the van today...pulled the rear seats out and vacuumed the carpet, the seats and used some carpet/fabric cleaner to clean the seats up a bit. This van was the daily transportation for a family with 7 kids for the last 7 or 8 years....must have been a ton of cheese its and animal crackers under the seats. Got the rest of the windows cleaned....too much glass in this van for my glass cleaning abilities to do any justice on.

This van is loaded: Power windows, power door locks, tilt wheel, cruise control, A/C, power driver's seat, ceiling mounted console with sunglass holder, garage door opener holder and a really neat display that shows average fuel economy, current fuel economy, distance to empty, direction and outside air temp (that display alone almost makes the minivan seem like a lumbering cargo plane..well enough so that it takes some of the sting out of driving a minivan LOL!). The list of goodies goes on and on...this van has every option available.

Took some pics to show you folks what our money got us. I think we got a lot of vehicle for what we paid for it.....$950. Yeah, $950!

If you look closely at pic number 3, right above the rear tire you can see that only spot of rust on the van. A three inch long bit of surface rust. I will slap a grinding disk into my electric drill, grind that area down, spot glaze it, prime it, and give it a few coats of the closest blue I can find to the factory paint. Other than that one area, this van is CLEAN. Well, the fabric on the seats is grimy, but a few more cleanings with the fabric cleaner and/or some seat covers will take care of that issue.

Congrats!!!:ernae:

I know how this feels! Had to "suffer" from public transport for many years, nevermore!!! And BTW: there´s nothing cooler than Mini-MPVs, expecially when they are full of gadgets and gimmicks! And there´s always the superior riding position (I just recently climed - lowered myself - into a friend´s new Audi. I really had to make up a whole new self-folding-technique to get into/out off it. Horrible!) My Dad had a similar one (same color;-) and recently replaced it for a GM/Opel Van.

Keep it clean and well maintained and you will get a lot out off it! Have fun!

When you do the front brakes, be sure to adjust the rear shoes too. If the rears aren't correctly adjusted, the fronts will have to work double and wear out prematurely.

The brakes WERE fine until a guy took the van for a test drive. The driver side front caliper had gotten stiff from the van sitting for 7 months...and when the guy was driving it, the caliper was stuck and instead of stopping or turning back, the guy drove the van for about 5 miles with the right front brake stuck and burnt up the pads. The guy I bought the van from had a replacement caliper and put it on the van, but didn't have the brake pads. So, I will replace the front pads for sure....$20. The van was given a 4 corner brake job last fall...just a few months before it was parked. Just a guy who did not know enough about cars or have enough common sense to know that you don't drive a vehicle with a stuck brake.

Tomorrow! The van will be registered, tagged, insured.....and I will get to drive for the first time in 2 or 3 weeks...feels much longer than that!
