Need to know if the following programs will run under the "XP" compatability of Win 7

Need to know if the following programs will run under the "XP" compatability of Win 7

It looks like I will be building a new system fairly soon. Not 100% certain of this, but 92% certain. Going to build a killer system...or as killer as I can get for around $800. Initially, I will be running Win XP Pro...but in time I want to upgrade to Win 7 Ultimate or Pro 64-bit...which ever one it is that has the backward compatibility to run XP 32-bit software. But I need to know if the following software can be run this way:

Photoshop 7.0
Aircraft Container Manager
Air Wrench
Martin Wright's DXTbmp, MDLmat and MDLcolor
Ivan Hsu's MDLC using the Windows interface by Morton (I think it is by Morton).
FS Panel Studio
FSDS Version 3 and higher (not that I know how to use it, but I dream that one day I will).

Does anyone run the 64-bit version of Window 7 Ultimate/Pro and found that these software items can be run under the compatibility thingie?

I really want to step up to the latest and greatest, since I am likely stepping up to a 6-core CPU, a 1gig graphics card, 4gig of RAM, 3 SATA hard drives. But if the above software, which I use to tweak, modify and paint sim aircraft can not be used under Win 7, then I will stick with XP Pro.

Another option, if it is possible, is to have a dual boot set up with Win 7 64-Bit and XP Pro installed on their own HDs.

FS Panel Studio = yes, DXTBmp = yes. I run both on Win7 64 bit. Don't even have to tell it to run in compatibility mode.

First off Do not hesitate get the 64bit W7 with Ultimate

I have it and these programs are installed on Windows 7 64bit Ultimate not in XP compatibility mode.

Air Wrench
Martin Wright's DXTbmp, MDLmat and MDLcolor
Ivan Hsu's MDLC using the Windows interface by Morton (I think it is by Morton).
FS Panel Studio

All of them run fine.

Photoshop 7 and FSDS I would assume run fine under Windows 7.

The only program that I have found that does not run under W7 64 bit is FSMetars 1.5.5.

It uses some older code in Visual Basic 6 that is completely incompatible with W7.

FSMetars 1.5.4 does work after you install some missing .ocx files from MS.

Yeah, I had forgotten about FSmetars. Good to know there is a work around for it. I love that little program...it really adds to my simming enjoyment.

I would assume that TrackIR works fine in Win 7 64-bit.

The system I am looking at is one recommended by Txnetcop. You can take a look at it in the Toy Room forum...I did a post about a MOBO/CPU combo and he suggested this system. Under $800 to build a killer system (not counting monitor/keyboard/and such). Win 7 64-bit will have to wait a bit...but I am sure looking forward to screaming in FS9 on a system with more punch than my 8-year old P4 3.0gig with 6 leaking MOBO capacitors (I am surprised and GLAD that this system still runs well in the shape it is in).

----

Since my wife has given me the green light to build myself a new system, I suppose it would only be fair to buy her a new system too. Just a basic solid off-the-shelf system....doesn't have to be a killer system...just something better than her 6 year old laptop.

Hey Obio,

I think you may have a problem with Photoshop.

I've read a couple of posts on various forums concerning older version of Photoshop and 64 Bit systems. Seems to be hit or miss most of the time. What I mean is that some say it works perfectly, others that they're having problems with crashes and installation errors, etc.

Humm...

You all know this may mean jack sh!te soon as Win7 is having a SP1 soon *Feb 22*. It could destroy compatability for these programs.

That is not likely as most of these programs are 32 bit applications which should run just fine under W7 64bit.

The real problem with compatibility is in some of the installers for some programs. The programs would be 32 bit programs but wrapped up in a 16bit .exe installer. Those programs don't have a chance of being installed until you extract the core files on a XP system.

If one is really worried about SP1 breaking compatibility then you simply image your hard drive right before you install SP1. If SP1 breaks any thing critical to you it just becomes time to restore your image.

I get some quirky behaviour with old aps running Windows7 Profesional 64-bit. Normally the older apps get installed in the Program Files (x86) folder, You may want to see if installing the apps in another folder helps.

If you want to have a dual boot system (I do), Partition the disk and install XP first, then install Windows7. Windows7 will be the default OS, but you get the option to boot to the "older" OS at boot time.

I have Photoshop 7.0x running with Windows7, I am not a heavy Photoshop user so I don't know if it works all the time. I have been able to run it and create some bump maps with the nVidia filters.

By the way there is no upgrade path to Win7 from XP you would have to upgrade to Vista and then Win7 and that would be ridiculous. Your best bet is to start in Win7 to begin with. You would literally have to start all over if you use Windows XP and then decide to go to Win7

When the time comes to go to Win 7, I will buy a full install package of Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit, do a format and overwrite of C drive and do a full install of Win 7. I am not one to upgrade one OS to "make" it into another OS. I know that Win XP will not allow me to fully utilize the power and memory of a 6-core CPU or 4 or more Gigs of RAM...so Win 7 64-bit is the logical end result...just want to make sure that all my tweaking and painting application will still work before I do.

If I go with a duel boot set up, Win XP and Win 7 will have their own hard drives.

Now your talking that is a great set up!

I have FSMetars and I had a problem after I upgraded to Win 7 and I wrote Mark about it and he sent me another Version. No problems now.
He's good about that.

First off Do not hesitate get the 64bit W7 with Ultimate

I've just upgrade to a on a 64 bit system i7-2600 3.4 Ghz chip with 12 GB RAM and the WIN 7 (Home Premium) OS.

I'd have to agree with DD here.....

In my opinion the advantages far outweigh any inconvenience with having to work through program compatibility. You know you're going to end up there anyway.

Incidentally, I know this is another debate, but I spent some time trying to figure out if I could build a system less expensively that buy one online (I've done this is the past). I eventually went with the online option. I just couldn't get it for less. I reached the conclusion that we've probably crossed that bridge now unless you're building the uber-machine. from hell.

Better keep a partition for XP to run Aircraft Container Manager at least Tim, it will not work with Vista either. I use PS CS now, but had PS7 on Vista, should work on Win7 too. It installs in the 32-bit (x86) Program Files.

Since no one else has mentioned it, let me add that there is no problem with Track IR and W-&. I have the 64bit Ultimate edition. You'll find that it runs FSX better too.

I am 99% certain that when I build this system, I am going with a dual boot configuration. I have a few older PC games that I like to play from time to time....I doubt they will run under Win7. So, When I get the system built, the intial OS will be Win XP Pro on its own 250gig SATA Drive...will install my sim utilities under XP since I know they work just fine there. When I am ready to install Win 7, I will install a new 250gig SATA drive for it to go onto. My sim files (3 very tweaked installs of FS9, all my photoshop files, my scenery and mesh folders) will remain on their own 500gig SATA drive. When I install FSX, it will get its own SATA drive as well....won't get much use however as most of the planes that I enjoy flying are not available for FSX as freeware, so I will still do the vast majority of my flying in FS9.

I'll be upgrading soon, myself, and after reading Tom's Hardware Guide for comparison, I've also decided to with AMD's 6 core CPU. I'll also go with Win 7 Ultimate and run 64 bit. Corsair RAM is so inexpensive today that it doesn't make sense to get less than 8 gigs. Really, the only area my opinion diverges from Ted and OBIO's is my choice of an Asus motherboard, though I had a very good Gigabyte board many years ago.

Thanks for starting this thread, OBIO; very timely.

Okay....since ACM will not run under Win 7, is there an alternative for ACM that does the same thing? Even if it is payware...as long as it does not cost a small fortune.

Alternative is to format the 250gig SATA that I am now using as Win 7's C drive, format a 500gig SATA, then either install XP on the 250 and 7 on the 500 or partition the 500 and install XP on one half the drive and 7 on the other half.

I HAVE to have AMC...such a time saver when working on paints and when adjusting lights and effects.
