New C47 from Manfred Jahn

I ran into some limitations of the texture lay-out, like the cowl flaps textures which are used on both sides of the engine. The X-8 had a large part of the engine fairing painted black, but there is no way I can do this on this repaint. Therefore I have to search for the best alternative...

And you definitely have found it, Huub!
Excellent!

In my eyes, dealing with those typical limitations and trying to make the best out of it is one of the most challenging and interesting parts of repainting (besides research work).
Accuracy (where possible) is of course important, but I also very much enjoy those (few) moments of "artistic freedom" where it's up to me to imagine and decide on how a certain item may (or should) have looked like...

Cheers,
Markus.

I did this paint on the MAAM Dakota before, so researching was the easiest part of this job.
FSX version should be finished within the next few days, followed by the FS9 rendition.

Markus.

Nice Paint Job

I like this one!!!! Is it USAF or USN or ????
Either way it's a beauty. I see you have it spotted at one of those
Solomon Islands 1943 airfields. I like that too.

:salute:

I believe Stansdds is correct. It is named “Bluebonnet Belle” in honor of her home base Burnet, Texas, the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas. It is painted in early war VIP transport colors.
Your right AZ1USN, that is the Solomons scenery. Its the only place I fly!:ernae:

Here is a snip from their website about Bluebonetts career:

The C-47 on display in our hangar is owned by the Commemorative Air Force. It was built in Oklahoma City in late 1944 as a C-47B serial number 43-49942; then flown to Montreal, Canada where it was transferred to Great Britain under the Lend-Lease program.

The aircraft was ferried to England and served with the RAF. In 1945 it was assigned to the No. 435 Transport Squadron, a Canadian unit as KN270. It was ferried to Canada in 1946. The aircraft received the Canadian Forces serial 12909 in 1970.

It was surplussed and entered civilian service in 1974. From 1974 until 1995, the aircraft was owned by a number of Canadian airline and charter companies, after which it was repatriated to the USA.

The Highland Lakes Squadron purchased this aircraft from a Part 135 cargo operator and donated it to the CAF in 2002. While legally airworthy she was in need of a lot of tender loving care. It required a two-year restoration project by the Highland Lakes Squadron to bring the aircraft up to operational standards.

Named the “Bluebonnet Belle” in honor of her home base Burnet, Texas, the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas, she is flown by experienced crews and treats air show crowds to the roar of her two mighty Pratt and Whitney radial engines. She serves as a living memorial to the thousands of men and women who built, serviced and flew them during the war years.

This one wasn't planned.

The C-47 from the Dutch Military Aviation Museum has recently been resprayed in the colours from 20 squadron ML-KNIL (Military Aviation - Royal Dutch Indies Army) as it looked in 1949.

Somebody asked me if I could do this repaint. However the C-47 in the museum is a ex-Danish C-47 with de-icers and it is sprayed aluminium grey. The Dutch C-47s in 1947 were polished and didn't need de-icers in the tropic heat. As the MLM C-47 is not yet complete and there is still some doubt about colours, I did a polished C-47 as it looked in 1949 when it was stationed at Tjililitan airfield near Batavia. Batavia is currently known as Jakarta the capitol of Indonesia.

Although it wasn't planned I hope you like it!

Nearly finished,
Huub

Done!

Underwing lettering needed some re-alignment to show up centered:

And of course she needed proper (white-red-white) proptips:

In order to take full advantage of the crispyness of the high-resolution textures, the exterior skins are saved in 32Bit-888 format. They do look great, but they are a pure frame killer!
If you experience poor frame rates with this repaint, you might replace the exterior texture files with the DXT5 coded ones included in a seperate folder. You may notice these DXT5 converted files have just the quarter size of the 32Bit (4 MB compared to 16 MB), so performance improvement is quite obvious. The flipside is you're losing sharpness...
Go judge on your own!

Uploaded at AVSIM, Flightsim.com and SOH.

Enjoy!

Markus.

Thanks Rene,

From that one it wasn't a big jump to do this one. The final livery from the 20sqn Dakotas as they flew in 1950.

Both ML-KNIL liveries are uploaded at the usual places and will be available as soon as they are approved.

Enjoy,

Thank you, guys!

Unfortunately, I messed up the outline's width of the "ROYAL NEW ZEALAND AIR FORCE" lettering:
The yellow outlining appeared way too 'fat' compared with the real one.
'Accuracy fix' is uploaded.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Cheers,
Markus.

Hi,

This one was way too good to pass up on so I started an RDAF one. Still a lot to do.

Hey Dag, good to see you again! This one is special for the Dutchies as well as this one was given to the Dutch Military Aviation Museum and was resprayed as X-5 first and has currently been resprayed as T-443 from 20 Transport squadron.

Looking forward to it!

Cheers,
Huub

Very interesting. I need to add some more markings to it and weather it slightly. I have the RDAF book by Jan Jørgensen where K-688 is featured heavily. I need to remove alpha from the fabric covered control surfaces, add dirt here and there and possibly fade the dayglo somewhat. The images I have of it shows a pristine paint finish but I need to do something.

Is there such a thing as a camouflaged KLu/MLD C-47 and are you planning to do any?

Thanks
