Windows 7 install fix

Time we had some screenshots around here

Here's what you do to set up CFS3 in Windows 7 for multiplayer. Nothing here should be any different to what Tailwind has already posted, but let me know if it is.

First install CFS3 on Windows 7. Just stick the CDs in the drive and let it get on with it. There's no special tricks even in 64-bit, the default options work just fine. You'll finish up with a CFS3 icon on your desktop. Fly the thing, then update to 3.1a via the two patches from Microsoft's CFS3 site and fly it again. You now have a vanilla CFS3.1a installation.

This is the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. Find the CFS3 icon on your Desktop:-

You now have a copy of cfs3.exe named cfs3-Copy.exe. Rename this - I've called mine CFS3Online.exe:-

Create a shortcut to this renamed copy:-

The shortcut can now be configured for multiplayer via the shortcut's properties:-

There's one thing remaining, OLEACC.DLL. It's in your CFS3 folder and it must be deleted before multiplayer will work (don't shed any tears for this file, Win7 has its own version on the system):-

You're now ready to fly online using the CFS3Online shortcut. Watch your six, especially if Tailwind's around...

Very Nice update

Picture is worth a thousand words thing. Very nicely done hairyspin:salute:

Thanks

Lots of good tips in this thread. I have had mixed results getting CFS3 to run under Windows 7 so I have gone back to XP.What I am hoping is that one day GoG.com will get all three MS Combat Simulators and update them. Cheers MarkL

Windows7/CFS3

My OS is Win7 64bit, However having followed the actions provided by Wings which were much appreciated in all the detail provided. This was followed, but when loading I am presented with the following---THE PROGRAMME CANNOT START BECAUSE COMMON.DLL IS MISSING FROM YOUR COMPUTER. TRY REINSTALLING THE PROGRAMME TO FIX THE PROBLEM, Unfortunately this action was not successful. Your comments would be much appreciated.

Hello dancd

Check and make sure you copied the CFS3win7.exe file inside the main game folder. If it is not in the main game folder you will get this error

Cheers

Guide is not working for me. Could it be something else?

Thanks for the guide on installation, however I still have problems getting this game to run. I have MSFSX and it runs fine, however CFS3 continues to stump me. I have followed the guide here to the letter (I think) and still cannot get the game to run. I have changed the compatability settings in the manner suggested and this is what happens. I double click CFS 3 icon and get the splash screen up for about 5 seconds, my screen flashes twice (As though it was going to the game) and then...........nothing. I thought it might be video drivers, I have an AMD X4 965 black with 6 gigs of ram and a pair of ATI 4800s in crossfire, so I updated the driver, but still get the same response. I am using win7 premium 64 bit as an OS. I am not sure what my next move should be and I am hopeful you might have some suggestions.

Go to your Start menu and click on Run CFS3Config. Wait until the program tells you "CFS3 has been configured". Set the screen resolution you want, colour depth and anti aliasing as desired and exit only by using File/Exit or your settings will be lost.

Now try running CFS3.

I have CFS3 running on Win7 Home Premium 64-bit without trouble, but I'm quite sure it won't use Crossfire - CFS3 is too old! I haven't heard of it refusing to run on such a setup, but you might have to set your rig to run CFS3 on one graphics card only.

Thanks for the quick reply, Hairy. I had not done the config piece by exiting from the file menu, but did so. Tried to open the executable and got the same result. "Uncrossfired" my cards and again got the same result. It has to be something in my system configuration that is causing this, but I am at a loss to troubleshoot that, short of a reformat. Unless, you or one of the others in this forum have some other thoughts. And again, thanks for your help so far.

Check event log

Hi

Try and run the game. After it fails go to Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Event Viewer. Click in the drop down triangle for Windows Logs and look at Application and System categories

See if there are any event errors that refer to CFS3 crashing. (Red Exclamation Mark) If there is one double click on the event and read what is says. It may not say CFS3 specifically it may just say an application failed to load with an event ID. Check it against the time you tried to load the game and it will likely be the correct event

Google search the event ID or post here

Ok I have checked the event log and this is what came up in the ACEEvent log

0000000050: 2011-08-31 21:08:25:335 Exception <Saving Xml Document>: Access to the path 'C:\ProgramData\ATI\ACE\Profiles.xml' is denied.
Exception Called by: ATI.ACE.APM.Server.XmlDocumentSaver::SaverWorker

Not sure what it means, but seeing ATI and ACE suggests something with the video driver as I have a Radeon card. Thanks for any help you can provide Tailwind.

Further reviews of all the logs found the following in the Application log:

Event 9010
A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Microsoft® Combat Flight Simulator 3)

and

Event 9013
The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application

Ok, I googled both events and found some related posts that indicated antivirus could be the problem, or Windows aero. I turned off each one and tested CFS and got the same results, ie., I could not get passed the splash screen.

Sorry for the delay

Quick question. Could you please launch the config icon and make sure your screen resolution settings are the same as your monitor settings?

I ran into this the other day. Game defaulted to 600x800 but monitor was 1280x1084

When I fired up the game I got the initial launch screen then disappeared and went to desktop. After I matched resolution the game loaded fine

Just a thought

Thanks

TW

Thanks Tailwind. That was the problem. Made the adjustment on my AMD control panel and it is working fine. Thanks again for your help and your patience.
