has anybody ever thought of making their own combat flight simulator? just a thought seeing were limited by the sims game engine ability that there so many I wish it had this stuff in one make me wonder why no one thought of making a new engine that works with CFS or something :p

Hey Jedd,

The idea has been bandied about on a number of different occasions but in the end it would require a fair amount of time and resources.

One of the biggest decisions is also one of direction - What to include, what to exclude, etc, etc...

I see well I have ideas as to how we could but it would take a while to do =_______=#

Some members of the Microsoft Train Simulator community are working on a new simulator that is a whole new game engine, but reads MSTS content. I imagine something similar could be done for CFS2.

Hi JEDDRAGON, its great to see such enthusiasm for modding CFS2. I saw your post about Upgrades to CFS2. CrimsonSkys sounds interesting. I never played the original but I remember a trailer on the CFS1 installer that looked intrieging. I see you are getting to grips with extracting meshes for importing into CFS2, aside from the rangeling with permissions, There is a lot of work to do with a meshs to make them work really well in CFS2. I mean building  parts hierachy trees in Gmax or the like. There are some neat scripts that make the proccess of part naming less tedious, but  After much time spent doing exactly this I have come to the conclusion that its easier to start from scratch in Gmax. the end result is far more rewarding. In answer to your question

Of course,
but it takes a lot of work and its more than any one person could accomplish.
There are several examples of open source flight simulators and combat flight simulators available on linux.
FlightGear is the most advanced but, graphicaly it's about par with fs2000. "Open Source" is part of the linux philosophy it means any one can download the source code and change it how they wish just as long as they abide by the terms of the Gnu GPL, thats great, I wish microsoft would adopt open source, I much prefer working in a free environment.
Ubuntu is my operating system of choice but I struggle to make any headway understanding flightgear source code,<br> I have become so familliar with the workings of MS flight sim.
In my opinion CFS2 is the best/easiest platform for combat flight modding even with it's many limitations, there are very few reasons why I bother keeping windows running on my PCs and CFS2 is one of them.
If you need information about the inner workings of CFS2, what has been done already and the goals of the great work yet to be achieved! this forum is the place to ask.

In all my years of working with Simon, I have YET to hear of an OS or proggie that could hold him back.

Annoy him ? Yes

Make him work harder ? Sure.

But STRUGGLE ??!?!?!?!

well the answer to that would be is we had a C++ game engine coder I knew a really good coder in Rio Hondo collage he lives and breaths this stuff but i doubt he do it for free though i see that what we need is something that reads the data for those games

well so far I'm good at editing and changing stuff off other works I been doing this form another game engine known M.U.G.E.N. it's a 2D fighting game engine I use to asking for permission I usefully haven't got a no so far :p but seeing the rules are a bit different here I my have to rethink somethings here

I seen that site before flight gear gee I have knack of finding stuff i think is useless at first until someone tells me other wise XD
I have a copy of Ubuntu I used a virtual machine to test it out I like it for an alternate OS though i need to reinstall it might take some time though :p

My first week involved in CFS2 I saw the gargantuan amount of "aftermarket" add-ons and it occurred to me an Open Source version of this game was needed. The topic has been brought up several times in my two years in CFS2, and strangely seems to be shot down and discouraged. Since M$ refuses to release the various CF sims, an open source program using NOTHING but the multitudes of add-ons would be ideal, I see no new CF sims on the horizon, especially from M$, so an open source guerrilla version would be welcome, at least at this keyboard. well so far it's better if we could have a game engine that works with CFS 1,2,3 but right now we can't and we need a C++ game engine designer to make an engine BTW have you guys thought of asking the train sims dude to help make your own or do they have their hands tide with theirs?

i guess what I'm saying if MS doesn't want to or can't give out theirs it most likely better to get someone who will remake a new one for you guys :p
sadly I know one guy who can just don't think he would want to :p but if any of yous are willing there are game engine maker programs out there that work the same way there is one called unity i saw it being used in my class by that coder I told ya about i think I'll take some class on that too

here the site

btw here the site it seems their giving it out for free but it's for windows :p

download page yeah it's a big file though might take you a whail to DL

More Research Needed

Outerra may be the first step in the Basement Revolution to Phase Two - Integration of existing models and aircraft with infinitely better physics modelling.

Jed, are you willing to see what can be done ?

It's gonna take a far more agile mind than MINE to figure this one out.....

Outerra

At the very least, Outerra sure looks like the ticket for providing a new, whole world environmental engine. Since so much of the new gaming technology is designed for compatibility with gmax and 3dsmax modeling, as far as visual modeling is concerned, exporting our existing gmax models could be a snap, although our FSDS models might be a challenge. The physics modeling looks promising for designing or adapting existing player flight models, but its got to handle accurate AI performance in aircraft and ships too. I wonder how well this engine would adapt to weapons effects and combat damage modeling? Without this, it would just be another cute civil sim for touring around in eye-candy planes. Nothing against that, but its just not the same as a combat sim.

Next, a good graphics artist and coder would be needed for the user interfacing - we're gonna need lots of cool screens and backgrounds with clickable buttons for navigating the sim's various modes like in CFS2 and CFS3. Lastly, it would be nice to have some AI ship-to-ship action and ship-to-shore bombardment included in the package. One of the cool features that i enjoy seeing in JF/A-18E is the Tomahawk launches from surface ships against land targets during simultaneous air strikes.

well we could just ask them all this their still in development and I think they said engine is an open source code for total control
it sort of reminds of mugen the 2D fighting game engine i work with you can do all most anything with but it's limited within a fighting game format
but these guys look they have a go any where do anything world game engine

BTW if you want to look at their version of a flight sim check the images below the first one
