Of course,
but it takes a lot of work and its more than any one person could accomplish.
There are several examples of open source flight simulators and combat flight simulators available on linux.
FlightGear is the most advanced but, graphicaly it's about par with fs2000. "Open Source" is part of the linux philosophy it means any one can download the source code and change it how they wish just as long as they abide by the terms of the
Gnu GPL, thats great, I wish microsoft would adopt open source, I much prefer working in a free environment.
Ubuntu is my operating system of choice but I struggle to make any headway understanding flightgear source code,<br> I have become so familliar with the workings of MS flight sim.
In my opinion CFS2 is the best/easiest platform for combat flight modding even with it's many limitations, there are very few reasons why I bother keeping windows running on my PCs and CFS2 is one of them.
If you need information about the inner workings of CFS2, what has been done already and the goals of the great work yet to be achieved! this forum is the place to ask.
