Payware aircraft - Installer package

It's been a while since I've installed aircraft and I have a general question about the ones that purport to automatically install all of the sub-folders once you point the aircraft to the FS9 folder. Inside the specific aircraft folder, along with the panels, textures and models, I see a brown box icon. When I open it, it asks, 'Do you want to open this file' and it has the name of the aircraft (aircraft.air) and the type: Installer package.

I'm assuming then that this little brown box icon is the program that will install the sub-folders for me?

Thanks!

Whoa!!! I believe you are looking at the .air file (FDE). You DO NOT want to mess with that. Let it be and simply be sure it is in the same directory as the Panel, Sound, Model and Texture folders. There should also be a .cfg file in that same directory.

Yup air file. I think both Vista and W7 show it with that brown icon. That is not an installer as the guys already pointed out. Don't mess with it.

You need an editor such as AirEd or Aircraft Airfile Manager to open the airfile. Not sure why the OS now labels these as installer packages, since they are clearly not.

Good Luck! T

I recently tried Google Chrome and all my .air files changed to that icon style.

Chrome was horrible so I uninstalled it but the icons remained the same and there are still signs that parts of Google Chrome are in there.

Unless I'm mistaken, the brown icon and labelling as an installer package means your .air file extension has become associated with Adobe Air:

ust leave it alone, and it will work just fine.

Yes, that is exactly what has happened. Adobe Air is used to power a number of applications, in the UK it is the engine for the BBC i-Player, I would imagine it has similar applications in other countries.

Garry, the reason you had your change is because Chrome has the latest version of Flash Player integrated into it, which also uses Adobe Air. So you may well find that Chrome itself uninstalled cleanly & completely, but your system considers Flash Player to be a completely separate entity. Personally I find Chrome the perfect browser for some uses; all my downloads are done via Chrome, and the auto translate feature is great for some of the foreign sites. It is a bit quirky, and certainly the menu features are not as intuitive as IE.

Thanks Andy

That explains how I have it and am stuck with it

How can I get it back to how it was??

I didn't like Chrome as some pages I use, it displayed in a different way and generally seemed to try and change too much.

If you could rollback your Flash Player to an earlier version that should do it; might be a case of uninstalling it completely, and trying to find an older version from somewhere. Adobe are now as bad as Microsoft used to be, foisting their updates on you whether you want them or not; sloppy though, to go for an extension that was already being used - I suspect that if MS/ACES had not walked away from FS9/FSX this could well have ended up with handbags at dawn!!

LOL... quite an accurate depiction, Andy.

I remember once, I deleted one of those little brown packages out of the folder for an aircraft. Hence, the plane, when selected produced the following:
"Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 has experienced a problem, and needs to close." Placed the little brown package back into the aircraft folder, and all is well again. Everyone who posted above is correct in their convictions. Just leave the little buggar in there.

When this whole thing came about initially there were many reports of folks who tried to unravel the install because it actually made some things not work at all ... Not sure at this point which programs were affected.

Some folks ended up having to reinstall the whole system to get it cleaned out. I know that I had tried to simply remove the association of the .air extension via the Windows interface and that buggered things up. But was recoverable.

I would suggest that unless you have actual issues with something to leave it well enough alone.

I just installed Chrome, because my IE suddenly would not download from AVSIM. Installing it did not change my airfile icons. Maybe because I already had them linked to be opened with Aired? They have been linked there for a couple years, and that works great. Mine are linked to Aired to quickly change from/to visible in the aircraft list. I sometimes like to check texture installations on AI installations, and to be able to make/check new AI downloads/installations, as some models are not set to be invisible by the uploaders.
