Revising an old thread; I finally have a car to worthy of placement here. I am bit of a car nut but that wasn't reflected in my choice of car until now . Bought this 2008 Ford Falcon XR6 last year just before Christmas. Very impressd with handling, NVH and the 6 speed sequential ZF gear box

The very quick Turbo version of this would be my dream car but the running costs, insurance and purchase price was too much for me...probably too many speding tickets too. As it is the standard XR6 is plenty quick enough.

Past cars?

1999 Mazda MPV (current) - wife's car to be replaced with something more economical soon
1998 Honda Accord (the Falcon replaced this) had it ten years and did 270,000 trouble free KMs with it
1993 Citroen ZX Volcane (yet another unreliable Euro but fun to drive)
1988 Nissan Sentra (bought as another cheap run-about but engine blew up)
1987 (?) Honda Civic LX 4 dr (cheap run about to replace company car after been made redundant - rusted away)
1996 Honda Civic LXi (company car)
1995 Nissan Bluebird (Written off after crashing off very steep driveway onto road after parking - nobody in it thank goodness)
1984 Fiat Uno 70SL (another unreliable Euro)
1987 Honda Civic GTI (reliable but rusted away)
1982 Ford Laser Ghia
1978 Toyoa Corolla SR Coupe (reliable as but rusted away)
1976 Hillman Hunter (unreliable)

Oh my. I hope I can remember these...

Before marriage:

Shot from over 3 years and 23,000 miles ago when she was brand new from the dealer. At least she still looks as good as she used to. I am hoping to hang on to this car till I croak. Unfortunately the way people drive around here the only way to keep it safe is to leave it in the garage.

Remarkable, Steve...

Here's what i'm driving for the last couple years with great enjoyment :

300cf.jpg

It's a Chrysler 300C Touring and, according to the dealer, was build by Daimler-Benz and as such not available in the US. It was build in 2006 and i bought it in 2009 with 40K (KM) on the clock. It is what i'd like to call my ' you only live once' car. I was driving a Voyager and went to dealer to look for a newer one when i stumbled over this baby which was on display in the middle of the showroom as ' car of the month'. I immidiately fell in love with it.

Although I can afford it it is totally out of my league because all cars i have owned before ( with exception of the Voyager ) were rusty old crates like Citroëns, Renaults, Fiats, Opels, and alike. Heck, this car is almost bigger than my house ! :icon_lol:

Here in Holland it's quite an eyecatcher, i feel like the Maharadja of Magador when driving it. :costum:

Cheers,
Jan

My hall of fame:

Before my enlightenment:
1. Ford Fiesta Mk. I (first car, rusty as hell, but I loved it, great little crate, very reliable and forgiving for a beginner)
2. VW Polo (horrible thing, first car with some kind of economy mode, engine trouble all the time...but it still had a partly wooden dash;-)
3. Opel (GM) Kadett city (loved the frugal design, but in terms of reliability a complete disaster)
4. Renault Rapid (van, rust after 3 years!, most uncomfortable carseats ever experienced, unreliable, but great for transport and holidays)
5. VW Golf 2 (Rabit), (unreliable piece of junk, but practical, cheap to run)
6. VW Golf 2 (Rabit), (reliable and cheap box)

enlightenment - driving can also be a fun, aesthetic and comfy experience, too;-)
7. Lancia Delta II, not always reliable and expensive, but the best drive in it´s class at the time, miss it still!
8. Lancia Ypsilon (840) LS, great cheap ride with top notch design and interiordesign. Great drive, but too mistreated by the former user!
9. Lancia Ypsilon (843) Momo Design, Great look, but a disappointment in terms of roadholding and drive.
10. Fiat Grande Punto (interlude;-), practical great car, but slightly sloppy assembled and well...too normal;-))
11. Fiat Panda 100HP, What can you say: THE BLAST! Never had so much fun in a car the size of a shoebox. But the sportsuspension took it´s toll on my old hurting back!!!
12. Lancia Musa, great ride and superior interior space for it´s size.
13. Lancia New Ypsilon (846). This car fits me like a shoe, fell in love with it!

Number 13 seems to be my lucky number;-)

The 300C Touring is the same thing as my car. In fact a lot of people in the US put the 300 bumpers on the Magnum SRT-8. I liked the way the Magnum looks though, so have not changed it. I think the predominant reason the 300C Touring never came to the states is because the Magnum was not a big seller. My car was one of only approximately 275 Magnum SRT-8's built, when compared to the Charger SRT-8 they built 3000 of those a year including the 1000 "Limited Edition" models. I guess since the thread is revived though I will say that we got rid of our Grand Prix GXP to get something that was better on gas. So in September we picked up our 2012 Chevrolet Volt (yes I am being serious). So far all is good on that front other than the constant stares people give while driving by. Ownership experience of it has been extremely positive, and with almost 4,000 miles on the clock it hasn't had to go to the dealer once for any reason. Before I get flamed I will point out that yes I know electricity is made from coal :icon_lol:, no the battery does NOT cost $10,000 to replace (is actually $3400 removed and a new one installed), no it will not spontaneously burst in to flames, and no my electricity bill has not sky rocketed. It is only about $20-$25 extra a month on my electric bill for the 1000 miles I drive it every month. In fact right now I am down to $0.03-$0.05 a mile depending on how fast I want to drive it, and yes it is fast. It is definately no Prius, but obviously is not Corvette fast either even though it feels like it sometimes with that 273LB FT of torque from a dead stop. :icon_lol:

100_0455.jpg

Bad photo I took of the inside. Ironically the first picture was taken from my phone. Which is actually better than my Kodak digital camera I bought years back. Go figure.

A few rides I enjoyed, but also a few headaches & regrets!

1977 Toyota pickup - first car, but a piece of junk...contrary to Toyota's reputation!
1984 Chevy Citation - actually a very reliable car for me, despite its reputation
1981 Chevy Monte Carlo
1986 Buick Riviera T-type - great car that was somewhat ahead of it's time (see touchscreen digital dash)
1986 Ford Mustand 5.0 GT - the perfect car for an 18yr old with a heavy right foot
1986 Chevy Celebrity Eurosport
1984 Chevy Monte Carlo SS - of all the cars I've ever owned, this remains my favorite.
1977 Chrysler Newport 400cid - an absolute tank, but served me well and never left me stranded
1967 Ford Mustang - only owned for a few weeks before I sold it. Not a wise purchase!
1983 Oldsmobile Delta 88
1994 Ford Thunderbird
2003 Saturn 300 LS - my first "new" car, bought off the dealer's lot.
2003 Ford Taurus SES
2007 Toyota Camry SE

1967 Ford Fairlane XL500 (Holley 4-barrel and 4 on-the-floor)
1966 Chevy SS396
1976 Chevy Pickup
1988 Chevy Cheyanne Pickup (traded back in a month later when the new sportsides came out)
1988 Chevy Silverado Sportside Pickup
1993 Chevy K-5 Blazer (still have it)
2001 PT Cruiser (still have it)
2003 Chevy Silverado Sportside Pickup
2004 Dodge RAM Rumble Bee (1 of 5,000 made) - This is the baby....

I won't mention the Honda 100 Scrambler motorcycle that preceded the autos....but it was the first "vehicle" I had.

Morris Mini van in green 1970 - 1973. It had 220,000 miles on the clock when the rear sub-frame failed and I scrapped it.
Company cars until 1991.
Datsun Stanza to 1992. Rust bucket but it served it's purpose.
Company cars until 2007.
Vauxhall Vectra model B, 1.8i to date. Jeremy Clarkson hates Vectras but I find it comfy.

An update to my list on page 1.

Traded off the POS GMC Sierra for a 2006 Nissan Titan LE King Cab. I love this truck! All the bells and whistles are on it. Although I'll probably end up getting my first speeding ticket since 1976 in it.

1974 Monte Carlo
1975 Corvette
1976 Triumph TR7
1981 Datsun Pickup
1983 Nissan Pickup
1991 Toyota Pickup
1994 Honda Passport
1995 Surburban
1999 Chevy Silverado
2008 Chevy Silverado

Next one? Another Chevy Silverado! Probably a crew cab 3/4 ton next time. The other two are 1/2 ton extended cabs.

'55 Chevy 150 2dr wagon, (not a Nomad) 265ci V-8 and powerglide. My parents gave it to me in high school as my first rebuild project in auto shop. Got it running, then starter went out. New starter cost more than my next car.

'53 Ford Customline 2dr coupe. 239ci V-8 Flathead, 3 on the tree. Paid $50 for it from my best friend in '65. Rebuilt/built up over the years. Had to give it up when I went overseas in USAF summer of '70. Wish I still had it.. My favorite car.

'71 GMC 3/4 ton pickup, 350 4bbl, 3 spd auto. Bought used in '72 from a San Diego,Ca dealer when I returned from overseas. Was their parts delivery vehicle. Drove this truck for almost 3 years, loved it. Had to give it back to bank when the job I got when I got out of service only paid me gross, what I said I needed bring home to cover my bills.

Company owned '63 Chevy 1 Ton service truck. I was the company mechanic. Large landscaping company. (Not the above company, I left it shortly after losing the GMC.)

'64 Rambler Ambassador 990H 2dr hdtp, 327/270hp V8, 3sp autoHP. Bought it from my foreman for junk price ($35) after engine fire from cam chain jump. I fixed it, and drove that car for over ten years, hard. Gave it to my sister (after I bought '82 Ford Van below,) with 250,000mi + on it. Her ex destroyed it when he got drunk.

'66 Rambler Rebel Classic 2dr hdtp 289ci V-8, 3spd auto. My new wife's first car. I worked at Ford dealership as mechanic. My '64 needed a rearend assy, (closed driveline,) and we had just traded in the '66. Bought it for $50, (engine very noisey, timing chain, (DUH!)) Bought it, changed rearends, fixed the one out of the '64, fixed the engine, and she drove it for 3 years till she punched a hole in the oil pan driving to the nearest driveable road. We lived on the road (2 lane highway) outside town, and it was being torn up and rebuilt. Piece of the broken up concrete went thru pan.

'66 Mercury Comet 2dr. 289 2bbl V8 auto. Wife's car to replace '66 Rambler. Drove it a few years. Her uncle bought it to use in a demo derby.

'82 Ford E-100 short cargo van. 300ci straight 6, 3 on the tree, no power anything. Not even a passanger seat. Needed something bigger than the Rambler to carry my first Giant Scale R/C airplane. (7 1/2ft wingspan.) Had 61,000 miles on it when I bought it from the dealership in '83,(parts delivery vehicle.) I just scrapped it out last year, with 260,000 miles on it. Never had the valve cover off it. Just rusted away.

'68 Chevy Nova 2dr, 250ci six, auto. Well used when we got it to replace wife's Comet. Drove it about 4 years till we sold it to neighbor when we moved to Calif. in late '88. It ran good. She liked it.

'81 Subaru 4dr 1800cc 2wd 4spd. Bought it from customer at 110,000 miles when customer didn't want to replace headgaskets. (Common.) Fixed and drove that car for almost ten years. Junked it at 240,000mi when the front body suspension mounts rusted away. Was still running good when driven to junk yard.

'81 Subaru 4dr 1800cc 2d auto. Bought same as above, for wife. Totaled when T-boned when she pulled out from stop sign without looking. Hit just behind front door, drivers side. She was unhurt.

'78 Plymouth Valiant wagon. For wife. POS. Slant six rarely started when cold. POS. Sister gave it to us. POS. Junked it. Did I say it was a POS! Somehow managed to limp along for almost 125,000 miles. POS.

'86 Ford E-150 long passanger van. Bought used for wife from dealership where I worked. Son finished it off when blown rear tire came thru rusted out body.

'78 Ford E-150 Passanger van. 351W V8. Still running and being driven. Gave to daughter, who sold it to her friend. Has almost 300,000 miles on it now.

'94 Ford Aerostar Extended AWD Van. 4.0 V-6, auto. Had bad tranny when traded in at 160,000. Rebuilt tranny and drove it till 2 years ago when rear springs rusted thru. When trying to replace them, the mounts fell out of body (Rusted out!) 252,000 miles on it when it went to scrapper. (Wish I still had it, loved that van.)

'86 Lincoln Towncar. My dad's car when he had to quit driving. (Macular Degeneration.) Nice car. For wife until electrical system problem I couldn't trace. (Turned out to be fuel pump.) Traded it in on her present vehicle.

'04 Ford Explorer, 4.0L SOHC V-6, 5spd auto 4wd. My present driver. I really like this one. Just went over 100,000 miles, still like new. Will drive it till it drops. It's just to small for my R/C hobby! Need a trailer.

'02 Pontiac Aztek 2wd. Wife's present driver. UGLY if you stand behind it. She likes it. 117,000 miles. Antilock brakes don't work(computer), fuel gauge doesn't work ($300 part), (She has run out of gas,) but it runs good, gets good mileage, 22-25mpg, (depending on her lead foot, lol.) We actually use it as the family driver. Extended warranty doesn't cover the stuff that goes wrong. We like it, but will probably trade it when something better comes along. (Read FORD!)

I've had 3 motorcycles, '66 Montgomery Wards (Italian made) 250CC Street, '70 Honda 350cc Twin SCL350 (Street bike with high pipes.) '70 Honda SLR 100cc 4stroke single on/off road. My fun bike when I was overseas. (Okinawa)

This will need to be a multi part reply. My very first 'car' was a 1938 Morgan-J.A.P 1000cc running [mostly] on Methanol and registered as a Motorcycle ...... only three wheels so it was regarded as Motorcycle and Side car 'Combination'. Following the entertaining 'Trike' was a 1947 Morgan 4/4 powered by a 1.5 litre Jaguar four [big mistake], a 1949 MG-TC that was seriously reworked into a blown 'Bob Dankie' replica, a 1954 MG-TF 1250 and to round off the square riggers, a 1955 MG-TF 1500. The three wheel Moggie was a blast but not girl friend friendly in the least, the Jaguar 4 in the other Morgan ate bearings regularly and finally a distributor problem killed it, [actually, a rod through the block killed the distributor!] I wrote the TC off in a big way [shame, it was a cracker of a car] and the best of the bunch was the TF-1500 once the XPEG block was bored out to 'somewhere' over 1600cc. :kilroy:

1 Opel Kadette B, given to me just after passing test, very odd car, imported from Germany, reregistrd with steering wheel on the wrong side, but practiclly indistructable, spent a great 3 week holiday touring the highlands of Scotland with that car

2 VWPolo, red, old style

3 VWPolo, same as above but blue

4 Triumph Dolomite 1500HL, brakes where useless, handled like a canal barge and painted in the classic British Leyland Russet (s***) Brown but still the best car ive ever owend.

5 VW Polo, my first new car, had it six years

cheers ian

Not my car this time, but a news item I saw this morning that might be of interest.

This guy inherited his car from his father, who got it from his father; the car has now been in the family for 56 years and is still going strong!! For the non-Brits, the Morris Minor is a bit of an icon over here, had a bit of a cliched reputation as the sort of car that would be used by district nurses doing their rounds in the countryside; it was built from the 1950's until 1970, in a variety of models - one of the more famous was the Morris Traveller (a bit like one of your station wagons) with it's wooden framework. The one in the news article is a very early model, with the split windscreen. The engine from the Minor was later turned sideways and used for the totally iconic Mini.
