Still Piddlin' ... "The Grizzly"

Hey thanks guys ... this is of course exciting and that's why I wanted to share its development. There will be some things needed and maybe you all can help.

For example, as far as I know, there are no known pictures of the cockpit. Fortunately, Moses03 came up with a source for drawings and these will be exceedingly helpful. Pictures, what colors in the cockpit, of the panel, etc. would be great. Otherwise, I can make do with what we have.

I also need a better texture for the wheels of this type. Anyone have access to that?

Some may be interested in machine gun and cannon firing effects. If really nice ones exist, and we can get permissions, we can make that available. Or, if someone wants to step up to create effects, that would be great.

The panel and gauges should come together quickly as Scott has most of them in inventory.

I should have the exterior mapped for textures by the weekend.

This project is developed for FS9 and we will try to make it portable to FSX pre-SP2/DX10. I will make the gmax source available for anyone who has the time/tools/talent to do an FSX native conversion.

I will also make a FS2002/CFS2 convertible version.

Anyway we might be able to get this gem without the cannon nose.....looks like it could be a cool executive type of plane...in bare metal.

Another point about the Grizzly. It was darned fast. When they were calibrating the airspeed indicator, the USAAF loaned Beechcraft a P-51B to use to pace the Grizzly. The Mustang couldn't keep up. :d

To give some better idea of the M4's destructive power, the version put in the B-25H is basicly the same 75mm that was installed in a Sherman Tank.
 
The main difference between the M4 used in the B-25H and the M10 used in the Grizzly is that the M4 had to be manualy loaded. The M10 was an autoloader.
 
It was quite fast at lower altitudes, as befits a ground attack aircraft. Also was reported to be a remarkably relaible and trouble free prototype, much in the manner of some of the Grumman products.

But as with many projects, Not enough need by the time it was ready. Bet the Russki's would have loved this!
 
I have never heard of this plane. When I first saw the screen shots I thought it was a take on the Ki-45, or Ki-102.:redf:

Looks like a Mad Max version of the Beech 18 to me. When I first saw the pictures I thought "Whoa, you guys really want to win that RTW race again.":icon_lol:
I am looking forward not only to the outcome but also the process of creating a FS masterpiece. It was a real hoot watching the A-26 come together, and I expect this will be more of the same. :applause:

I looked and looked, but the "Crash of '08" destroyed all evidence of a Milton Shupe post where he reportedly used the word "retired". I knew it couldn't last :costumes:

Thanks boys! it looks like a real winner. I too can imagine a Russian lust for this tank buster, which leads to ideas for more fictitious paints.

Sadly they never made enough for us to test the 75mm in RTW Race conditions, but...

Firstly, I will be happy to test it for you in FS2002. :)

Secondly, not quite sure what you meant by "FS2002/CFS2 convertible." I tried two methods with my Fairchild models to make them FS2002 compatible:

1. Compile them with the FS2002 SDK.

2. Compile them with the FS2004 SDK, then convert them with MDLC to make them usable in FS2002.

I found the second method worked best for me, as it preserved most of the annimation that is added by the makemdl.parts.xml file. The only downside I could find is that the parts hierarcy may be altered, which may cause some parts to disappear behind transparent textures. In the case of my Fairchilds, I thought it was better to retain the annimations at the risk of some parts disappearing.

I have had a few models that would not convert, maybe because the polygon count was too high. I guess that was what you were referring to.

I usually change animations to conform to the FS2002 SDK, and use Gmax 1.1/MakeMdl for FS2002. These are more easliy convertible to CFS2 than the FS2004 MakeMdl output. This usually takes me 1-2 hours to do so I do not mind at all providing the FS2002 versions. I must leave the actual CFS2 conversions to someone else as I have no expertise there.

This article is chock full of interesting stuff, pictures and cut-aways, performance and specs. Its a full writeup on construction, systems, fuel management, firepower, performance and testing.

Meanwhile I did some test mapping last night on the exterior and the mesh looks really clean. I should have mapping done for textures by the weekend.

Tom is working on the FM already and Scott is starting on the panel so we have things happening.

I also did a first test on VC creation just to get a close look at the interior shape and a sense of what she feels like to really be inside. I think you will like this one. :)

Now, I will go away and get some work done here.

I see absolutely no reason why we can't have a Grizzly out front hunting bear ... I mean checking weather. LOL
