Midget Mustang

Looks great & can hardly wait to fly it! I always liked small sport planes long those lines. I was always a big fan of the Laser 200 and the Midget Mustang. They just look like a lot of fun. I used to have an RC Laser 200 and a several aerobatic RC models including a Sig Cougar that I rebuilt/modified into a tail dragger after it crashed on a previous flight. I clipped the wings shorter, added larger ailerons and a slightly larger elevator surface. I overpowered it with a Webra 61 with a tuned pipe. I would launch it going full throttle with the back of my legs holding the horizontal stab & then stepping back letting it go. I swear it would go 10 to 15 feet and get airborne followed by a nearly vertical climb! Anyhow, I hadn't remembered those long ago days until just now looking at this model.
 
I have done a lot of work on the tail feathers, and after getting them mapped I am able to start playing with paint schemes. This is a test of an idea that I think I like...just need to tweak the curves on the trim.

The materials are currently very basic...no real spec layer, no reflections, no bump map. I also had self shadows turned off on those pics. It will look better when the materials are complete.
 
One more at the end of the day...I cleaned up the trim and added the registration. The cruise speed required 12" numbers per current regulations.

Looking real good indeed, even without the correct material settings.
Don't forget to give it some good ambiant occlusion effect :)
 
I enjoy (enjoyed painting it more) your Thorp T-18. And I can see this one as being well received by those who like to sling paint also.
I see what I did to the Thorp, daily, as all of my repaint work is set as a recycling theme of 80+ images. A custom screen saver across all my monitors. :mixedsmi:

I have got the tail wheel roughed in. It uses a linkage set-up that is available for real-world RV's. I was able to make it fit. :wiggle:

Sweet Robert! I love mechanical detail like this. Out of curiosity, how much deflection does the rod have and how was it connected inside the real aircraft? Is it a spring steel rod?

It is a spring steel rod that bolts to the underside of the fuselage. I am sure it has some amount of deflection, but I do not know the amount. I do know that it is the same arrangement that is used on our Thorp, and that is fairly stiff. Tonight I put textures to the tail wheel parts, and added the prop.

An important note regarding this project. The way things have been going lately it is becoming likely this may end up having to be payware. If that in fact becomes the case I would try to price it very reasonably. I hope you understand.
