DX10 Bliss

I was bitten by the DX10 bug too and took the plunge on my new install. Roger's posts, the Avsim threads and finally Steve's fixer made my install work. I am now enjoying a stable, smooth and great looking sim with smooth cockpit shadows, toned down bloom effect, white caps on the water following the wind direction and great realistic water reflections of land:

The following courtesy of Steve Parsons fixer, Paul Wheeler's FSWC lite and DX10 water shader, A2A 172 and Aerosoft Skiathos X:

I should not forget Nick Needham for his excellent guide that helped me setup an optimized system and a sound basis of a DX9 install that worked the best possible way. I have this now fully backed up and can get back to it whenever I wish. However. what I'm seeing is very promising.

Yes Roger, it did, using the legacy shader slider full left. When in the middle the runway was mirror-like at night. It looks great now with lights and all.

I forgot pilotj who suggested FSWC lite. It is the best looking water ever as I hated the excessive default reflections. Thanks pilotj!

Now check out night Skiathos bloomtastic!:

Wow some of those required a second take to realise they are sim pics. :icon_eek:

Note to self - must try DX10 when I get the new HD for FSX.

Wow, that looks really nice. Almost realistic. Something I never tried was DX10 mode. But the more I see, the more I like what I'm seeing.

What are the negatives that stand out as issues yet as far as running in DX10, compared to running in DX9?

man, that first night shot is outstanding!! I have been running DX10 for years now, gotta have my cockpit shadows. Was thinking about the fixer, but with P3Sv2 coming up, I'll wait and see.

man - every time I fall for this I kick myself...

flashing ground lights somehow synched with the users aircraft strobe...fixed?

the grass at CEN4 blocky textures...fixed?

the all white FS9 ported favorite aircraft...fixed?

rain umbrella in VC mode...fixed?

easy to install now without having to erase the shaders folder etc...fixed?

stumbled upon this thread and I don't think you need to move the sliders to make skiathos work in dx10...

quite out of nowhere, someone posted a fix in one of the comments on ADX: http://airdailyx.blogspot.co.il/2013/10/taxi2gate-mco-update.html

I know the article is about T2G orlando, but look down there in the comments. Someone posted an unofficial fix for the boat shadows in skiathos, so now it's dx10 compatible and there's no need to move sliders or anything.

I'm on DX10 now, too. Unlike most others, however, I have not invested a single dime in compatibility tools. All it took was the free fixes, converting my AI traffic models with ModelConverterX and strictly staying away from any form of portovers.

@Oleboy: I think there might be some sceneries and effects not working but the fixer is eveolving and will probably deal with most of them

@heywood: I think all of those are fixed but I have not fully investigated myself. I know I haven't seen any such problems the few hours I am in DX10 but I don't use portovers and don't have all ORBX products. The fixer program makes it very easy. It is however highly reccomended to backup your DX9 FSX Appdata folder and your Inspector profile if you are on Nvidia. This way you can easily get back if you don't like it.

@adi518: Read this post, thanks. I did not have any shadow issues or haven't noticed them. My problem was runway textures that showed like a mirror at night. The slider fixed that.

@Bjoern: I have started with the free stuff too and indeed it was working fine also. I bought the fixer as an appreciation for Steve Parson's work and find it very handy. I would not have solved Skiathos without the fixer's slider, or it would have been more complicated.

Just a last note: My system is 6 years old, I have just upgraded the GPU two years ago with a 460GTX. I am running a Q6600 2.4 OCed to 3.0 with 4GB RAM. I almost feel like I have set up a new system after Nick's optimized setup guide and then DX10 switch. I did not increase my FPS but the sim is smoother running and fluid with no hickups or stuttering and up to now I did not have a single OOM, a constant problem in highly detailed areas. I can fly over KSEA now and all I have a drop of FPS to the low teens but it is still flyable and no OOM. And it looks like in the shots above. I am a very happy camper as these hard times we are living are not suitable for buying new hardware.

Dimus.. check that you have the latest version of the fixer. Steve fixed that reflection at night issue in version 1.0 build 19 or so I read in avsim dx10 fixer support forum. You can then, keep the slider where it initially was. The reason you want to adhere to that, is the fact moving the slider can cause nuisance with other sceneries. Just my 2c.

Adi I have build 19. Maybe it's a Skiathos specific issue. The slider is easy to change if I find problems elsewhere. I believe though that complete left is "scenery" optimized while right is "aircraft". No problems with aircraft so far so it stays there for the time.
I appreciate the input, thanks!:wavey:

Exactly why I have Steve's fixer!

Ok, great. Might as well point that out in the relevant support thread. :)

Reading their forum it seems Aerosoft does not support Steve's tool or DX10 in general. I posted my finding on the relevant Avsim thread for compatibility of scenery. As for Steve's tool, is his blog the place to post such info?

No need. He monitors the support forum on avsim. The real makers of skiathos are 29palms.. they're nice guys, I think they'll fix it.

And that's just about the only advantage it offers over the free fixes (apart from the "all in one" thing and the UI).

I still wonder how he made the textures display. Must've been a shader...

Does anyone know what files the Fixer installs?

I've no idea how he does it but unlike add-on converter X the port-over textures aren't matt and display as they do in Dx9.

What I understand is that he only swaps the DX10 shaders, nothing else. This is why DX9 is not affected in any way.
