2nd Generation jets .....

View attachment 47585... well, specifically the Hawker Hunter!

Dave Garwood's Hunters are still one of my favourite toys in FS9, a great representation of the classic British jet. It is another example of a 50s fighter that expanded beyond it's original role as a fighter, to become a versatile fighter-bomber, recce aircraft and trainer; it was still serving with the RAF/RN into the 1990's, and still serves as a front line fighter with the Lebanese AF - there are more than 50 Hunters worldwide also serving with civilian organisations, some on military contracts and one with Embraer as a chase plane.

Some time ago he supplied me with a couple of models that had not been part of his original release package; one of these was the Hunter FR10, the fighter recce version which took over from the Swift FR5 in 1961 until replaced by the Phantom in the early 1970's. I've finally got around to putting virtual brush to virtual airframe, and have got some wip pictures of my first 2 Sqn Hunter; I'm planning to paint 3 from this squadron, to cover the variations in markings throughout the 1960's, as well as some of the other squadrons that used this aircraft - I'll then be able to put the results here in the Library, as Dave has kindy given his permission to distribute these models.

What generation of jets are we in nowadays then?

4th/5th; Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen etc are 4th gen, Raptor is 5th gen. I think it's pretty subjective anyway, as the line blurs; people would insist the the F-35 is 5th gen, because it is newer than the F-22 - I'd debate whether it really is that much of an advance over something like Rafale. Whatever, I seriously doubt any of these jets will be still serving a useful role in 50 years, which makes the achievements of Hawker all the more remarkable.

Yes I think the best years of aviation are behind us now. Militarily it seems that remote is the way to go, civil airliners more and more automated.

The next repaint, 8 Squadron at RAF Khormaksar in 1962; the scenery is Ian Elliot's, available here in the Library - I'm hoping Ian will "tempted" if he sees one of his sceneries in use! :kilroy:

I need to adjust the alphas on all the paints, as per some advice from Obio; and I have 3 more paints to do (another 2 Sqn, a 79 Sqn and 1417 Flight) then I'll put them into the Library, if people are sufficiently interested.

To be precise Typhoon, Rafale, newest Flankers etc.... are graded as Gen 4.5, way i view it is;

Gen 1- Meteor, Me262, Kikka etc...
Gen 2- BAC/EE Lightning, Mirage III
Gen 3 - F-4 Phantom II series, F-111
Gen 4- Tornado, F-16
Gen 4.5- Mitsubishi F-2, MiG-35 & Typhoon
Gen 5- F-22, F-35, PAK-FA (Sukhoi T-50, my favourite Gen5 aircraft)

back on Track, Daves Hunters are always fun to fly, many an hour i've spent terrifying greek farmers in sim by flying a bit too low :icon_lol:

How about a S.O.A.F (Oman) paintjob on the Hunter while you guys are splashing paint around...long overdue

ttfn

Pete

I agree with you Pete, it's on the list, just need to get a few more reference pictures together.

Ian, you are a gentleman. :applause:

DAVE GARWOOD'S HAWKER HUNTERS

Absolutely concur with all of the above fine remarks about David's fine Hunter models.

Delighted that I will get my hands on a variation of the existing models. Did the RAF not remove all cannon installation kit and the associated 'Sabrinas' to produce a slightly niftier recce version?

David also produced a twin-seat model for FSX that I have been trying to get a hold of.

Very nice formation of Hunters at FAIRFORD this year on the Sunday.

No, they left the cannon in, it was very much a fighter recce bird - both the RAF and the SOAF used the Mk 10 as much for beating up the rebels as photographing them.

As for Hunters without the sabrinas - let me finish the Mk 10's first!!

You can get DG's FSX twin seater over at Britsim, along with a few other goodies.

also Nigel, if you still have that Helleni-Hunter i did, feel free to upload it :salute: mine kinda got lost in a HDD failure *cursing under breath* :icon_lol:
