777 help Kai Tek

Need some help on landing Kai Tek performing check board approach and setting up thrust reverse. Vatsim Eta 3.00 approx. I have never performed this type of landing on Vatsim and a Wilco 777.

Never tried it in a 777, but I've flown that approach a lot in a DH 106 Comet along with all kinds of prop aircraft. One of my favorites.

I use a visual approach and just take a right turn at the checkboard then line up to land on the runway. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy enough. Just takes some practice to get it.

The smart thing to do is obviously to try this off-line first and possibly in an aircraft that does make it a bit easier than a triple 7.

The approach itself is actually relatively easy. It is a simple series of visual descent points but aside from the turn on final it does not really require any special skills above and beyond basic speed and altitude control. But there is less margin for error and trying to fly it "seat-of-the-pants" is probably not going to work in anything bigger than a GA twin.

The real fun of that approach comes when you factor in real world Wx which almost always meant a strong right-crosswind and low level wind shear.

Cross the CH VOR(112.3) and fly a RDL of 270º @ 6000ft for 8nm and that takes you over the new airport VHHH, right turn decending to 4500ft SL NDB (268.0) @ a hdg of 360º then turn right to 88º to begin the 3.1º decent on the runway 13 IGS approach.Outer marker is at 5.5nm @ 1777ft.Middle marker is about 1.8nm off the threshold and is the go ,no go point.If your good to go its a visual approach from here, right turn to 130º @ RW NDB (377.0) and plaster yourself onto the runway.Missed approach is flown on the 315 RDL to TH VOR (115.5)@ 4500ft to hold and then rejoin @ CH VOR @6000ft and shoot another approach.

Fly the approach by the numbers and i doesnt matter what aircraft your in.

9 Dragons, but on my Taxi back to park and log at Vatsim my Fs9 went CTD due to a memory error. Only occurred at this add on scenery and no were else.

As good as 9 Dragons is, I like the Fly Tampa scenery better.

I've got the California Classics late 50s Kai Tak installed. Complete with ferris wheel in the park under the approach.

Couldn't resist. I'd never flown the DC-4 into Kai Tak before, so I just had to try it. So I took off, went around the mountains and came in for a Rwy 13 approach. Came in to the checkerboard a bit to the right, then over compensated to the left which put me going over the terminal building on short final. But I swung it back to the right while descending and made a decent landing anyway.

Yup, FT Kai Tak is very nice! I've flown many an approach there, it's my default testing airport, lol.

One of my first approaches (IRL) in a 747 was at the old Kai Tek airport, the famous IGS approach. It does indeed matter what airplane you fly, as a 747 can't make the turn at max landing weight with any wind out of the South, at least with just a 30 degree bank.....

Very much like flying into Juneau Alaska in the old days.....

WOW I'd call that a baptism by fire. I have LH Captain buddy that still considers the IGS approach and Wx combo at Kai Tek the most stressful times in his rather long flying career.

You don't use the "new" Hong Kong Airpot...apparently the concrete hasn't finished drying

I was doing an area recon, so I took off from the Hong Kong Int'l, headed east and came over the mountains into Kai Tak. Did a touch and go an headed back to Hong Kong Int'l and landed into a "pit of quick sand" at end of runaway 25R.
