a FS9 install question

ian elliot

SOH-CM-2025
In a few weeks time i want to do a reformatting, partioning, clean Windows installation of my hard drive, its been a couple of years and theres so much junk in there, i was going to transfer my present FS9 install and copy it onto my portable hard drive, and when i have the new fresh FS9 up and running, i was just going to tranfer the effects, guages, aircraft and add-on scenery folders, possably the scenery/world/scenery folder also, back from the external hd.
i was just wondering if its ok to do that in one go or a bit at a time, i know other forum members have done this but i was wondering what problems i may encounter if any.
thanks for reading, cheers ian

I make weekly back ups of my 3 FS9 installs....copying the the entire installs to an external HD that is only hooked up during my back ups. When I recently did a reformat and reinstall of my system, I copied the various folders back to my primary sim drive a few folders at a time....took my time to make sure that all the files copied cleanly and without contamination. I would suggest that you go slowly to make sure it all goes right...haste makes waste as they say.

I've just moved my install over to my unused second hard drive to keep FS stuff nice and tidy in its own place. My Aircraft folder weighs in at 80Gb and that's after I've gotten rid of 10Gb of old or redundant aircraft. I was going to do it all in one go but the pre move backing up took an absolute age to finish so I moved everything over a folder or two at a time depending on their size. That way it kept the PC from getting bogged down and went a lot more smoothly and a little bit quicker.

Just had a big collapse of fs9 & was forced to uninstall & reinstall from scratch, System Recovery failing to take it back to what it was. As long as you don't tick the box, your PC will remember all your Addon aircraft & they come up as normal in the reinstalled fs9. You then have to get rid of MS stuff you don't want, like Default AI. Addon Scenery was remembered, but all has to be reactivated. Traffic Explorer is also OK, but I had to completely reinstall EditVoicepack (which came out better, including airlines that weren't there before. Nice.)

The Computer Guy at my work said: "There are two kinds of PC owner. The ones who backed everything up and the ones who lost everything."

No doubt this is agreat joke amongst tekkies, but most of us do stuff with PCs & think, 'Yeah, I'll get round to backing that up one day...' Anyway, complete collapse is an opportunity for complete rebuild and as long as you don't lose any Pay/Donationware or Freeware that's no longer available, you'll be OK.

(BTW: Reinstalling the scenery country by country, flying round the world, checking that everything's how it should be is one way to pass those long winter evenings...) :salute:

Had to wipe my HD about 6 months ago. I copied my FS install to a safe place and after the wipe and XP install, installed FS and copied the what I wanted to keep from the back up with no problems.
