A Lockeed Super Electra Challenge...

That would be great, a Lockheed super electra! I think the perspex nose has a DF loop in it, by the look of it in the frontal photo shot of it a few posts back.

I would like to see a solid nose version come out too, please!

Yes please, I agree with Volker, Brian and mrogers. Would be nice to make repaints for KLM, KLM West Indies Division and KNILM Super Electras.

Cheers,
Maarten

Hi all;

kind of laid low right now with flu (don't think it is swine, but it sure is a pig!)

Solid nose version should be no problem, I'd actually planned on doing PH-APE. There are others I'd like to do if I can ever find out where the air intake was located for the P&W Hornet engine.

Pounding head, going back to bed now......

Paul

Get well Paul. And drink something that makes you really sweat. (cognac or something like it)

Looking forward to the goodies. Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Maarten

Hang in there Paul.

Electra 14-H NC17382 was P&W powered (Hornet S1E-G). Looks like the intakes are on the lower insides.

Hope this helps-

That would be great - we need an AI Lockheed Lodestar, and this might just work for that plane too.

Thanks,

Tom Gibson

setting up the hudson for fs9

Hi Paul and other hudson-lovers,
I installed the hudson last night, rather simply.
I stuck it in my aircraft folder as-is. :)

questions:

  • Flight characteristics: off autopilot, this bird wants to swerve almost uncontrollably to the right . Any ideas?
  • Propeller textures: I would like to swap them for one of the Bob Rivera sets, but I note there are multiple prop textures?
  • Lights:.... :isadizzy: okay I am hopeless on lights, outside of tedious trial and error, any tips?
  • Sound: reccomended alternatives--calling OBIO.....?
[suggestion mode] For an AI trasport version,it would be cool to go with an uncut fuselage and let painters place and shape windows and doors on the fuse.

Thanks for your consideration and Super Electric Thanks for bringing this bird back!

cheerio,
brady

For sound for the Hudsons...grab the sound pack I uploaded for the Grumman XF5F Skyrocket. Twin Wright Cyclone R-1820s. Some Hudsons were powered by Pratt and Whitney R-1820 Twin Wasps....shared with the B-24, C-47, F4F Wildcat and others.

I will be working on a sound pack for the Pratt and Whitney Hornet in the coming days....got to have everything ready for my brand new Lockheed L-14 Super Electra!!!!!!

thanks OBIO & Moses03!
this is a great design, I have a classic poster of her in my living room, flying over the brooklyn bridge. Got the print in Greenwich Village about 12 years back.

welp, took the hudson racer out for a test spin from LFRD to Guernsey, landed in the channel fog. one hopper, but still not bad for no viz til the fence. jeez what big flaps this bird can deploy!

Now the question of skinning comes to mind... can the model display reflective alpha?

Now the question of skinning comes to mind... can the model display reflective alpha?

Not in stock form it can't. It can be run through MDLC117 to give it reflective textures, then run through a hex editor to correct the problems this causes with the VC panel and the prop disk. Simple thing to do when you know how and have done it on dozens of MDLs. I can tweak the MDL for reflective texturing for ya....just need to get Paul's permission to upload such a tweaked file. I gave the new Chinese Mk 3 a reflective MDL and it works just fine.

OBIO

Well, I dont mind waiting for a package, I only need the mk3 for my purposes.
patience, I am told, is a virtue. so I am happy to see what develops with the solid nose plane. I will be painting civvie skins down the line.

thanks OBIO. any tutorial on the mdl texture thingie?

There was a tutorial on how to add reflective texturing to MDLs posted by JDTinballs (I think it was him...pretty sure it was him) a while back in a thread. Can't remember if that was before or after the big server crash. I will do a search and see if I can find that thread. Be right back.

Could not find the thread in which JD explained the process for adding reflective to a model and for fixing the prop disc and vc panel afterward...but I have the tutorial package he sent me...I will give him a buzz and see if he would mind if I upload it to the library.

Progress....

Hi;

okay, lets see. I'm on the mend, and back to the Super Electra. I'll have to check out the prop textures - I usually texture from and back of the disks separately to allow for different painting of props from and back (for instance, a logo blur on the front, or different colors applied front and back, etc.) Pre-war props were sometimes left natural metal ont he front, and painted black on the back to eliminate glare for the pilot.)

A small present to those asking for a solid nose. I've made a closer review of the photo I have of AX682 "George" (see enlargement below) which shows the edges of the nose are jagged, not smooth, looking more like cut metal than broken plexiglass. So I've revised the model as below.

I've got to add an antenna or two, and finish textures, but otherwise the main model is done. I am tweaking the LOD models now, and revising the VC, and then I will release it.

Last, thatnks to Moses03 for the picture of the intake, I've also included a photo below of another Super Electra with a similar intake. I believe this is the air intake for the Hornet engined model 14 (relocated from the top of the cowling) but then the question is, where is the oil cooler? Still trying to find some clear photos of how this was arranged.

Lastly, I actually had produced a "shiny" (alpha textures) TCA Super Electra a while ago (again, see screenie below.) If I can remember how I did it, I'll create a model that supports alpha textures.....

Working as fast as I can (and as time permits.....)

Paul

Looking great Paul! Thank you for taking on this project...I know that civil aircraft is not your usual genre...so this project is doubly appreciated.

If you can't remember how to set the model up to handle alpha channels for reflective skins through FSDS, there is another way to go about it using MDLC 117 and a hex editor. I took your Mk III Chinese MDL and had it sporting reflective textures in about 4 minutes.

Again, thank you thank you thank you. Your Super Electra fulfills one of my biggest wishes for flight sim. There is just something about those beautiful Lockheed twins that captured my heart years ago and make them my favorite planes to fly in FS today.
