A2A Spitfire out!

I have a question for you guys.
Have a look at these, almost identical, shots (preferably in full-size):

I have been playing a bit with the base textures, and wonder if it's worth it..
the pics show my first paint for the Spit, and one I'm playing with at the moment.
Apart from the differences in registration (and the name and orange triangle), which one looks better do you think? Why? Or do you see no difference?
 
I slightly prefer the less scratched (darker green?) look of the upper picture.

BTW, the codes extend into the canopy line on both (is this correct?)

Ya I prefer the second one a little bit more... gives the impression of a thinner coat of flat paint.
 
I can definitely see the differences in the paints. As mentioned, the second pictures is much more weathered. The dirt on the cowling is the first thing I noticed. I like it.
 
Jan Kees of course I'm biased, as it an aircraft from 322 (Dutch) squadron, but I prefer the second one ;)

I really like the extra weathering, gives a more worn appearance that I feel would be more typical of wartime aircraft. I particularly like the fact that it is more pronounced on the walkways, a realistic touch.

One thing I would point out is that you need to be very careful at the areas where the textures join at the top of the nose and the wing leading edges.

Have a look at this edited version of your image to see what I mean. I circled the offending area to make it easier to spot. The edge of the dirt/smudge has a visible straight edge that looks unrealistic. Admitedly you have to look hard to spot it but once you see it it always draws your attention... or maybe it's just me being anal. IMHO when painting over the texture joins it is important that the opposing halves match perfectly.

The only problem is that it is really really tedious to do :)
 
Yes I like Nathans paints. although he seems to have a few Mk's that are later than the I's and II's in his collection.

I may be wrong, and please correct me if I am, but I thought that the only serials with double letters for the I's or II's were in the AR2xx series. The BR serials I think are mainly MkV's.

If I don't check it, FSX tries to assign a function for any setting to all three pieces so I end up the three different parking brakes, two or three different elevator trim controls and so on. I still have that happening in Slew mode so the sim goes crazy if I hit "Y". It would be worth going through the FSX control settings and be sure your elevator trim is assigned to only one controller device and one key stroke.

Ditto that.

I'd like a glossy restored look also. As said previously it feels more real to fly such an example in the modern world of FSX than a battle worn BoB example. I have to admit all those repaints look great though.:ernae:

It seems most people like a slightly more weathered look, and I just so happens I do too, so I'll continue down that road.
As for shiny restored versions, that is not my thing, so if you prefer that look, I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere, sorry.
 
Well, I finally parted with the readies and downloaded this gorgeous bird last night. Loaded her up and took her for her first flight tonight. A2A this is a great aircraft. Attached is the screen shot of my first landing. Not quite a 3 pointer but close enough. Probably the best landing I will do. However I then c'd it up by blowing the engine. Forgot to read the landing check list (you know how check lists are for blouses) and forgot to open the radiator flaps. Taxiing in and pow.

Oh well, better luck next time. But for now its off to the maintenance hanger. New prop, new engine, new pilot.
