Aero L-39 Albatros

It prolly comes down the the GPU and amount of VRAM you can throw at it. I'm flying on a subnotebook and am somewhat limited in respect to GPU and VRAM. I notice a difference here - mainly in load times when you switch views. But with top end cards you prolly won't see any difference in performance.

Wow, great pic. What scenery are you using there in the first pic?

Its Mailsoft switzerland Pro X mate!! Best scenery made for fsx sp2 and the frames are really good too!! well providing i don't keep switching views as you say!! I also use the flylogic patroille swiss for emmen scenery, flylogic small swiss airfields and Mailsoft Sion X and you should have a full swiss scenery collection then lol!! ohh yeah and payern which is freeware but also designed for this scenery! I highly recommend them all! :ernae:.. Also as far as i know flylogic and mailsoft are the same people or company just one does the jets the other the scenery..prolly wrong tho!
Heres a few taken at Sion actually mate as you can see because i switched to the outside view my textures failed lol, thats just my crap PC though..

I absolutely hate it when my textures do this..just look at the mountains they look crap now!!!

Thanks for the kindness though Oli ;)!!

I must admit though yago, some of the textures I use do affect my frames, your mirage IIIS was an amazing paint job but for some reason my computer just didn't like it lol, plus in my opinion from your screens I think you do have a good system! Most of your textures work great but for some unknown reason to me the odd one just seems to slow down my comp, this is not a complaint in anyway, I still think your the master lol:ernae: and thanks for all your great paints!
some shots of me here having fun shooting up the valley leading to the matterhorn!

By those shots you have a lot of things going against with your computer. That scenery for example.Your computer can not handle those scenery texture very well either.Im sorry that you have problems with some textures .Since I save them all the same way you should have problems with all .TXmmy83 just told me that he gets better frame rates with ro145 than with the default textures, another guy told me that Aerosoft F16 frame rates are better with a texture of mine, I get confusing signals here.
Oli ,you can beg to differ as much as you like..those screenshots you posted tell a differnt story. My texture doesnt look messy and dark like that.See screenshots posted by others like Peter here for example.
But if you enjoy it like that, hats off to you.

Yeah well your right Yago but, it is with all sceneries I have the problem with the mirage III texture. Oli shared his knowledge and I did the same to that RoAF texture, these are the converted DXT1/5 ones that Oli told us about, I just followed his instructions mate, and as you can see there's no difference at all except much beter frame rates, certainly not looking like fs98, I think it was just photoshop that made Oli's look darker, Infact the bottom shot was your original paint thats why my scenery failed! So he has got a point! Your dead right though yago this scenery of Sion X is very stressing on my system and I also had better performance on my system using your F-16 textures!! Strange??? ;)

Hey guys. Two things:

1. Just a heads up on textures. The L-39 uses a lot of them, that's where it gets most of its detail from, rather than through geometry, so bumping up the size or bit depth may have consequences if you don't have a videocard with 512mb or more memory, especially over heavy custom airports which use a ton as well. We did a lot of testing on 256 meg cards and there were no issues with blowing the vram budget, even in big multiplayer sessions, but I can't say what will happen if repaints don't conform to the guidelines I set out in the repainting manual. Users beware as always! They look bloody awesome though. :)

2. A couple of people have reported some crashes on Gamespy in sessions with many L-39s together, 4 or 5 or more. This never came up during testing (which was 95% multiplayer, for about six months!), and I have not been able to replicate it, but I'm investigating the problem. I have a feeling it may have to do with the AI sounds being too large and causing a sort of memory leak. This does not seem to happen on direct connect, only on Gamespy strangely. On the lotussim support forum I have instructions on how to remove the AI sounds temporarily, and hopefully that will cure the problem for multi afficionados until I have an update ready. 3 or less planes together in a session seems to have no issue so far.

Thanks!

-Mike

Where do people fly online these days anyway?

Gamepsy is really buggy for me.... and I don't know of anyone in my town that flies FSX lol

Me too I think I'm the only person in the NE of England that flies fast jets online, all my mates just think I'm sad!!

OK ,I know why you have problems with that texture. I,ve reworked the VC texture file wich is included.
I made it twice as big 2048X2048 so I could get the details on the ejection seat. File name is L39Ext11 and it has 16 MB.. Replace it with one from any default texture folder .I,m sure that,s the culprit. I still have no issue on my sytem even with a file big like that. Converting the rest of the files to DX1 it,s unncessary if you replace that file. "Is it ready now ? ""Did you upload it yet " brings this kind of upsets. :mixedsmi:

You can see the modified seat on left and default one on the right..It,s just that and some small other non vital enhacements you can replace it without missing much..If you will download the Lithuanian AF skin you may have to do this again.

I didn't even notice that but again many many thanks I just can't understand the problem I mean I have followed your work for ages From tht ancient Flaker paint which is still the best, even down to the F16 Thunderbird helmet lol.. this is why we call you the master!!!.. thanks again mate..as an honest expression I will get your new file but I'm sure its not your fault nor is it lotus' I feel it may be down to certain pc specs or video cards I mean I'm still only using a nvidia 7600 all be it with with 500gb free ram, so I feel its probs my fault not yours even if my words sounded a bit harsh, I didn't mean to disrespect you in anyway though mate just to clear that up on my part!!!:ernae:

P.S. Mate I can't wait for the gray shark lol .... she's sexy, i showed my girlfriend it and she just hit me lol (really hard) and said that could have been a Boring (ohh sorry romantic) night out...soz guys she's only good for one thing..and she's not even good at that lmao..shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!;) If ever I get to Michigan I owe you 10 beers ... just passed out drunk and she's in a the huff lol Regards Pete!

Well I went ahead and did it. One of my favorites!

Lotus, you're a legand. Yago, keep up the good work.

Hope to see more from you guys in the near future.

Regards, Diego

No offense to other developers (theres some great stuff out there) but this L-39 was, hands down, the BEST 45 dollars I have EVER spent on a flight simulator add-on.

Mike, I'm nearly speechless. I cannot find any flaws after about 5 hours of flying tonight. This single plane has given FSX so much more functionality its unreal. You've struck the perfect balance between realism and performance. Just amazing!

I can guarantee I will buy every future plane you produce. You have incredible talent! :ernae:
If there's anyone who's still undecided out there, buy this thing asap! I cannot imagine how ANYONE can find a way to be unhappy with it!

I think that this beautiful a/c deserve some high res repaints ( I mean 2048x2048). For high-end systems that will not be a problem.
Best regards to everyone

Thanks very much Piperarcherpilot, that's very kind of you! :) I'm glad you're having fun with it.

Oli ,you can beg to differ as much as you like..those screenshots you posted tell a differnt story. My texture doesnt look messy and dark like that.See screenshots posted by others like Peter here for example.
But if you enjoy it like that, hats off to you.

That darkness is more a result of that Bloom-Filter I'm using. It's not the one from FSX but a 3rd party one that does not come with a fps hit. If I disable it the textures are "normal" again. I'm not really sure where I got it from but the resulting effect is quite nice. And the images are not direct-V ones.

About the compression, how about some samples...

810265Sample_1.jpg

123185Sample_2.jpg

The left half is 32bit, the right one DXT1. It's a direct comparison of the texture, no Photoshop, no bloom effects involved. You can spot a difference and 32bit looking better - like in the red-yellow-blue emblem on the tail which looks less smooth with compression or the logo on the nose (next to the #145) which also looks smother in 32bit or in the black nose paint where the edge between black and silver looks better in 32bit.

I've to say though that the differences are so small that I can only see it if I search for it. And in FSX (where there is also a spec map applied on top and shader effects like bloom are working) those minor differences are covered up pretty much completely. On the other hand this cuts down the texture package significantly. The RoAF uses 82MB of textures in addition to the 33MB for virtual cockpit and bump maps (the shared ones across all paints) resulting in a 115MB texture load for the L-39. Besides the plane you need textures for scenery and that can cause VRAM shortages and scenery blurriness.

The DXT conversion comes in at 13MB+33MB totalling just 46MB. Not only are those texture loaded faster when you switch views but you only free up VRAM for other things.

I understand that, if you're wanting ultimate perfection, 32bit textures are a must (even 2048 ones) but for those of us with little underpowered systems DXT conversions are a nice features since the visual disadvantages are not that noticeable while the performance difference is.

And I did not mean to say that you should do (or use) DTX yourself. I like that you paint with the best possible quality in mind. The question was more if you mind if people with "challenged" system would apply DXT compression.

Oli, i thought we understood each other, but this last post it,s not appropriate to the main topic wich is to pay respect and celebrate this masterpiece that Lotus gave us. In game shots, ok ,this kind of shots, not cool, it,s a tad disrespectful to all of us, an eyesoar just to proof your point by all means. That,s the reason i,ve opened yesterday another post called L39 textures to avoid this technical discutions here.:173go1:I tried that myself but if you bring my texture problem here i have to post the solution here, wich i didn,t want and I apologise for.

How is that disrespectful??? Sorry, that was not my intention if it was understood that way - again. I'm sorry to say the least ... :kilroy:

I am really enjoying this aircraft. :jump:
I cannot say I have been so immersed into night flying as I have been. I flew cargo and later law enforcement so 80% of my hours are at night.

Only had it a few days and man o man, you guys gotta do a cold war era jet. I would kill for a simular quality F-104,F4 !!!

As for paints. I would like to see a some weathered civilian paints. Even fictional ones say ones used for demo rides like the ones in Vegas.

Anyways, you guys got skills and We appreciate your attention to detail.

Thanks JimJam. As for the next project, a certain cold war jet is on my shortlist of ideas, and one from this side of the iron curtain, but I can't say for sure yet until I do some testing and investigating. I can say it won't be an F-4 though. As I understand it A2A is working on one of those and I have no doubt it will be epic.

Cheers,

-Mike
