Air Transport Command in New Castle, DE

Sad news today. One of the icons of the airport here in New Castle, DE is closed permanently. I was over there most of the day trying to save items from the restaurant. All the old WWII photos are gone now. People that had them on lone to ATC picked them up today. Some are going to other museums and ATC restaurants.

I did manage to get all the sandbags that were stapled to the walls, plus a parachute pack and parachute. Also a WWII era suitcase.

The airport has now taken over the building, and it will be used for SWAT training for a few weeks. After that I'm guessing the building will be demolished. Which in it's self is a a shame. It's all timber framing and if taken down properly would make great framework for a home.... a very big home too.

This is how it used to be.....

Gary,
Is that the place that had a C-47 that was in pretty bad condition outside? I tought I recalled that someone luckily got ahold of that and it will hopefully be restored.... If I'm wrong, maybe Bomber remembers whats going on with that bird...if it was indeed there...

Yes Witt, there was a C-47 there until 2 years ago. It was sold and moved... to southern DE or Maryland I believe. I heard it was to be restored but haven't heard a thing about it for over a year. I check around and see what I can find out.

The jeeps and ambulances were also sold off to collectors to be restored. The only things left outside and 2 "mock" howitzers, a couple pieces of farm machinery and some petrol drums.

http://www.masseyaero.org/ is where the DC-3, not C-47 went. Apparently, it's one of the few that never was converted.

I saw the backside of the building a few weeks back. I think it was abandoned for too long to be fixed. It looked like the whole thing was ready to cave in.

I hope DRBA finds a way to put something similar in there. It's a nice spot and we need something other than a chain restaurant or more corporate hangers over there.

Yeah, the roof is almost completely torn off and the place leaks like a sieve. That last high wind storm we had back in late January early February raised
h3ll with the shingles. But there's no way it could cave in... you have to see the timber framework inside. It's amazing the beams that are in it and they're all in great shape. At least the ones that can be seen are. I was up in the attic nosing around and the main roof looks to be still in pretty good shape.

DRBA has dumped a ton of money into the airport.

Runway 9-27 is closed because the Wawa end is being expanded and the 141 side (Rwy 27) is being displaced due to the houses on the other side.

They moved our entrance, extended the safety zone at the beginning of 19 and cut down all the nice trees that were there.

I think 14-32 is closed as well. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the beginning of 14 is being extended out.

Embedded centerline lighting is also on the to-do list.

Yeah, I heard that the closed runways won't be finished until October. It'll be a mess around here all summer long.

Oh, you mean that crew...... yeah it's the same ones. ;)

I really don't know Cheezy... they go to work late, go home early. Won't workin the rain or on holidays. I think it's all government people doin the work. :kilroy:

DRBA certainly doesn't fool around. I have to give them credit for that. When they took over the airport, the grass went from occasionally mowed to pristine shape.

I managed to pull a dual jump seat with folding seat backs out of ATC Sunday. There were two sets and I got one of them. I'm thinking they were from the C-47 that sat ouside and is now gone. I've got the numbers off the metal tag that's on the underside. How do you go about finding out what it came from using these numbers? I've no clue.

Here's the photo of the DC-3A-197 that was at ATC.
