Aleutians Scenery

OK< i will look for the landclass and waterclass thanks.... do they include the textures we see mentioned in the thread here?

PS...i looked in the landscape forum on this site and there were only four threads and none were on the Aleutians scenery...is it somewhere else? thanks...i would really like to contribute some sceneries to the area as i have some Aleutians campaigns that i am doing but need the japanese and US facilities on the islands to do it...but to do it right so others can enjoy it i need to be able to get the best land layout possible. thanks. ...
.

Cris, I think this is the post with a link to Rhumbas "new" Aleutians base scenery...

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=44572&p=500605&viewfull=1#post500605

The pics use a reworked "tundra" bmp series (009b2su1 to 7). As yet still unreleased. Inbetween things I'm trying to work up to an Aleutians specific landclass texture set - we don't want the rest of the PTO looking like this!

The snowcaps are from my CFS2 enhanced expansion, the rest is Dvslats CFS2 enhanced.

Generally, I'm working by following the teachings of Jean Bomber. My methods for working on individual bmps are described earlier in the thread. My preferred editor is Paint Shop Pro 8, but any graphics prog that handles layers will suffice. All the other tools are Martin Wright creations -pop by his site & get BMP2000 to view & edit the CFS2 terrain files. You'll need his DXTBMP if you're considering making blended backgrounds for airfields/ ports, & Derek Leung's FSSC if you're going to do fancy stuff with A16N flattens or create airfields from scratch.

If you're interested in G2K work & creating from scratch, look at the old threads by Jean Bomber in the landscaper's forum. That's how I got started.

UT,

Love the P-40s. I was thinking about doing the Green/Earth scheme, as I've already done the green (P-40K) version, but yours looks much better than mine, so I won't worry about it. You'll make our Canadian Brethren very happy.

PomBee.:salute::salute::salute:

Pombee, didn't mean to gazump you, your skin is just great, but I did notice the profile it was for was a P40K & I had KMs v3.

By the time I'd finished trying to get the damage bmps altered, I'd created a template I could use on both the P40Kv3 AND the P40Ev5, so I went ahead & tried the green/ earth P40E ...:salute:

No worries, UT. The way I look at it, the more skin options we have out there, the better, and what's the old saying about great minds thinking alike....:jump::jump::jump:

Thanks Uncle, sorry was away on other projects for a bit ..got your signal and reply on the way :salute:

Yep i use those same tools also and have been learning myself the same way, following Jean's posts and getting great advice from senior members. I have worked in 3D in other programs but each has its own demands :)

If I understand correctly from reading these posts, the terrific Aleutians scenery (with the snow-capped mountains, etc.) is a work in progress.

Given that, and to the extend possible with the current available downloads, what is needed (scenery, mesh and so on) to create the Aleutians theater?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Alpha_1,

The mesh files which are labelled terrain in the Aleutians package are not needed as Rhumba's mesh covers the islands. His watermasks also fix much of raised coast with water textures. Unfortunately the watermasks also drown some of the airfields.

As for ground textures, I think we need a set for high latitudes like the Aleutians and Norway, where snow is present on lower elevation mountains and hills.

I also found another package by the same authors - RCAF as pointed out in the earlier thread a few weeks ago. Here it is:

Kevin

I agree on the snowcaps. I spent one night searching for seasonal textures to hit the US Rockies with some spring lowlands and snowcaps on the mountains to no avail. We have hit and miss local sets of seasonal textures. It would be nice to have some upper elevations world textures with snow.

wsm..here is a summary of how to start...

Rhumbas mesh & Aleutians files

http://www.timacheson.com/SkyDrive/...ve.com/self.aspx/FS Addons/CFS2/Aleutians.zip

Xavier's Japanese airbases (just so you have Kiska to fly out of)
Search for Xavier in library and get his Japan airfields they include Kiska in the Aleutians

then Dvslats did a set of enhanced FS style textures converted to CFS2 search under Dvslats

Dvslats CFS2 enhanced textures,

You wont have bases ...you can try using this old set:

Aleutians
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=22694&d=1288603619

it is a very old set from 2002 and not very accurate but at this point the only ones we have until some new ones are made. The guys in this thread are working on it ..and some of the others of us are learning and will help as we can.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks so much, but a question.

Do the BGLs in the Aleutions East and West merely get copied into the Scenery folder or do they go elsewhere?

I assume the Aleutions scenery is added through the normal CFS2 process - run the application, start CFS2, go to settings, add scenery, find it and add.

I plan to add the East and West as folders so i can add a texture folder to each and tweak it. So i will put the folders into the Scenedb directory and add like any other add on scenery...but you will need to put them low down in the order if you put bases on top of them.

There are watermasks that Rhumba did but you lose shorelines and beaches if you use them. To get around that for now, i am just using Rhumbas LOD5 and not the full range of his new mesh in the Pacific but i hope maybe ...hopefully to learn to make shorelines and help add them to his new mesh. We will see how that goes.

Ys the others are planned to be added from the Scenedb folder.

Texture wise if you want accurate textures for that area ie up north, it will take some work.

and a note in case you get interested in trying your hand at the texture tweaking art...which is where things are right now with this it seems...

CFS2 shows textures in two categories... b for all the world but pacific and H for the pacific...that is the code suffix for the different areas. So you may have to get some of the packs of seasonal textures like those by Rhumbaflappy which you can find at simaviation or avsim and then you will have to change them over to show in the Pacific as his are for Europe.

To find out where to put them and which textures to use, get Penn32Wins tutorial which is here in the library under his name.
