Another old pilot rejoins the Squadron!

Tony - Your namesakes from Akemo's site (Ki-61) are brilliant - as good as the ones in il-2. The Ki-84, Ki-100-1b, Ki-43-111, J1N, Ki-46's and Ki-45 too. The A6M3 and A6M2-N are good though there is no 2d panel - but that's no big deal. The Ki-44 I didn't like.

If you haven't got il-2 make sure you get the DVD compilation (FB+AEP+PF+1946) which takes you up to v4.07. Then download the free 4.08m and 4.09 - it's not essential though as the DVD version is fine straight from the box, you'll just have a few less planes and maps. However now if you want to mod you'll want at least 4.08m.

Once you've added the 4.09 update then you can also add all the freebies at the AAA site for il-2 mods; loadsa new planes and maps etc. that allows you to fly anywhere in WW2 and beyond all in one game- yep european and tropical land and sea textures all in one game. However I prefer cfs2 for the Pacific though.......

Make sure you read the instructions carefully if you're going to mod il-2 - most importantly back-up the vanilla game first, it's not designed to be modded unlike cfs2!! :wavey:

Spud, thanks for all the info on IL-2, Ill make note of it. I'll have to find a friend with high speed access for any large downloads. Right now CFS2 is my thing. I have CFS3 and with a M$ game running on a M$ OS with M$ video drivers(64 meg video on a notebook that used to ride around in a policecar, Panasonic Toughbook, not really a game computer) CFS3 won't run due to a video problem. Jesus wept.

Oddly enough, Nipponophile that I am, I am yet to fly any of the Tonys or Tojos. Just ain't got around to it. At the moment Akemi has the world's only Jake seaplanes for CFS2 that I can find, his site is beyond price for us Jap lovers. I understand the Tojo was a beast to fly in real life while the Tony was indeed a dream. I have two books someplace from the USAF Museum devoted to JAAF and JNAF paint schemes and camoflauge. There are as I remember black night fighter textures for the Tojo, Tony, Zeke, and George.

Devil Dog sent me the VB and FDG Ki-45 Nicks. The FDG version is just the one I been hoping someone had produced, with the upward firing 20mm cannon. The rear guns in the VB and FDG are sort of dorky, oversized .30 Browning-looking guns, Akemi represented accurately on his Nick the Lewis guns used on many JAAf and JNAF AC.

Both of Akemi's Ki-46s are fun, I replaced the missing panels with the Alpha panel from their Ki-46 III KAI interceptor, although it is not historically accurate for the bullet shaped nose of Akemi's Dinah III recon.

The stock Zero panel worked in a pinch for me, I added the excellent Zero panel made by Claudio de Lullo to Akemi's Zeros. I don't fly VC in many planes I have that has it, Lullo's VC is cool because it ejects the shells from the nose guns, as I said previously, into the cockpit however. As soon as I find the link in Spain Japlance gave me for a Stuka -A, I'll pass it along, de Lullo has many if not all of his panels there. Morton also comes highly recommended, there are many fine panel makers out there also.

Check six my friend, until next time...

Banzai!

Thanks for the info re. cfs2 Jap planes. Those guys do some great work.

Believe me il-2 its worth adding to your collection, although far more Jap planes are currently available for cfs2. For the IJA you'll get a Ki-27, Ki-43's (1's & 11 's), 3 Ki-61's, 3 Ki-84's and a brilliant Ki-100-1a. For the IJN you can look forward to A6M2's, A6M3's, A6M5's, A6M7's, A6M2-N, J2M's and a N1K2-J, plus a flyable G4M1 and D3A1. ai aircraft include an A5M, N1K1-J, B5N2, B6N2, G4M2e+ohka, 3 Ki-46's and 2 Ki-21's.

Once your game is adapted to recieve mods then you'll be able to fly all the ai aircraft (the N1K1-J is a beauty with those underwing 20 mm gun pods) plus there's a new N1K-J Kyofu or "Rex" seaplane fighter available too, plus a Ki-43-111, A6M3 with 2x30 mm cannon field mod. Others are in the pipeline.

Map wise the game (the PF part) comes with around 16 pacific/far east maps including Malaya/Singapore which is unusual. The free updates include a Burma map; Imphal which is ideal for the Spitfire V's and V111's that the game comes with. Modders have added a cracking Philippines map and the Sakashima Gunto (between Formosa and Okinawa) designed for historical RN Seafire operations, along with a full size Solomons map too (the game only had Guadalcanal), others are being made.

Away from the Pacific you've got just about everything you need, including Finland, Africa and the Mediterranean - Malta too! Eastern front is brilliant and there are loads of maps for N W Europe in all seasons, many already populated by the makers. There's currently around 1000 ground objects in the library too.

Maskrider cfs2 airfields are better though when seen from the air!

As you can see the same aircraft can be used in differant theatres of war just by changing their skins - there's no limit to the numbers of skins and they can be easily swapped pre-mission. Finally there's an easy to use mission builder.

I save all this info and when I head for IL-2, I'll certainly use it, thaanks Spud.
