This question gets asked every now and then, other than the Lionheart Valkarie project scenery, there seems to be nothing else out there, which is odd when you consider the amount of RAF stations to plunder, and i have nowhere authentic to fly my Luftwaffe birds from, i could knock up my own but im a bit bored with scenery making at the moment and i thought i'd be lazy and see if anything else has surfaced in the past months.
cheers ian

'Twould be nice to have a few...

I've been discovering (rediscovering?) the Groundcrew models, and have a fleet looking for a spot to roost.
Mind you, I am agnostic of the times, I just toss in any old 109 or Spit and let them at each other.

Ha ha ha..Ian, deep down you know the answer really......;)

You've made some superb scenery both for CFS2 and FS9 (thank you), and accuracy is important, BUT...why not make a good generic Luftwaffe airfield, with all the trimmings. Make it re-locatable for those wishing to duplicate it and place it where a base may go. This would please 98.976538% of users (me included!), the rest...well, can go and make their own.

TBH there are those that have be built to represent airports that are still used as modern civil and military airports/fields/bases, Bill Ortis's Op Valkyrie bases (some are not totally 'real'), and err..that's about it.

I am surprised that there is not more, considering how popular Luft ac are, and how long Fs9 has been going?

Cheers

Shessi

yeah some Luftie bases would be good, specially those with the 'in-forest' parking and manufacturing facilities :icon_lol:

We could make it a group effort? I can make buildings, textures, almost anything needed for a German field. But I need source material. Apart from that: making something together is better that doing it alone.

Are not two enough?

No, no, no, don't worry my friend, we'll end up with Staffels of '109's, and FW's, squadrons of Spitfires, P-51's and Thunderbolts, not to mention '88's, Dorniers, 111's Lancs, Mossies etc...

all mixing, swirling, chasing and generally having a ball.

Then you'll need that extra parking space down there in the scenery, where we can all put down, have ourselves some fine Bavarian beer, talk shop, then;

Scramble!!!

Time to continue the airshow

I like Shessi's idea about "good generic Luftwaffe airfield", finding accurte material is a nightmare, maybe sacrificing historical accuracy for something that just looks right is something to think about.

below is about half an hours work from some old maps i have saved on disk, this is Leck, now a Tornado base i think, i just cant help myself :mixedsmi:

Hi,

a 'generic' Luftwaffe airfield would be a waste, I think. There is plenty of information around for at least an approximation of a real-life airbase.

The question is: Which period, which size?

Initially, Luftwaffe airfields were oval or rectancular grass fields with maby half a dozen hangars at the edge, often conveniently located at the edge of a forest. Barracks buildings within the forest, a railway connection and a swimming pool. Tower was often a semi-circular annex to a hangar.

During the Blitzkrieg phase, campaings were started to coincide with good weather to allow Stuka dive operations and the use of temporary airfields on pastures etc. Hard runways were scarce in Europe in 1939, maybe a dozen altogether, maybe even less. Hardened runways were constructed were wet conditions made operations impractical, but this appears to be relatively rare prior to mid-war and restricted to airfields that operated large aircraft. Other airfields were still just a small grass strip with a shed hidden in the woods.

At the end of the war, dispersal became more important. Highway strips etc. were used, but some airfields had an extensive network of hard runways and taxyway along with elaborate dispersals. Wittmundhaven comes to mind.

I'll see whether I can come up with something the next few days.

Best regards,
Volker

You see this is exactly the problem! LOL

VB, in an ideal world, yes, it would be great to create detailed accurate airfields, but it depends on who is going to do all that work!

Now Cees, that's my kind of thinking, I'd be more than willing to put my 'guilders-worth' in to help.

Ian, looks good, and I knew you couldn't help yourself ha ha,...There is quite a bit of info on Luft bases, but as VB states airfields changed spec during the war, so again potentially making huge amounts of work (for someone).

You can't please everybody, but I do think detailed, 'looking right' airfields placed in correct locations, would be a good start.

Cheers Shessi

For those, you might want to shift over to the CFS2 forum and contact Achim. He has a pot load of German Luftie bases for CFS2. He is quite accomplished at airbase building in CFS2 format. Don't know what it takes to convert, if even possible, but I use his CFS2 bases almost exclusively in my MB in CFS2 Europe and Med.

Hi,

here are a couple of links that should give you seme pictures of German airfields.
http://www.luftfahrtspuren.de/
http://www.geschichtsspuren.de/artikel/41-luftwaffe-luftfahrt.html
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gliederungen/EinrichtungenLuftwaffe/Fliegerhorste/Gliederung.htm

I have to admit that the links are all in German, but Google translator should give you an impression. I have some more stuff on my disk. If you are interesed in something in particular, drop me a pm.

Best regards,
Volker

just taken a look in Google Earth and Bissel (in Western Germany, coords; 52°56'34.32"N 8° 8'53.68"E) seems to be quite well preserved, can see the forested parking still in place as well as the perimeter....

Fliegerhorst Katwijk.....

Although I don't think it was ever released, but I do have a very neat WWII German airfield.....

Many front line airfields were nothing more than a filed big enough to land on and trees to hide the planes. German troops were advancing and latere retreating so fast there wasn't any time to build an airfield.

Cees, I think I speak for many of us here - would love to see your efforts regarding this scenery available ...

Cheers ! Mike ;)
