Approaching Roadblock for Devs? And Question for Devs...

Been tweaking things since my Win 7 32bit Home Premium upgrade from XP. Got FSX and most of my other apps running, and can, in theory, make planes. I don't think Autodesk will ever enable Win 7 support for 3ds Max 7 thru 2008. I can get my Max 7 to run under XP compat-mode, but it's still hit or miss( lockups, ctd's etc) Have access to Max 2008 (still have movie biz contacts), and it will run better, but not perfect.
All this got me wonderin'.
To all of the Dev's, freeware or payware, what OS are you all running, what version of Max/Gmax/FSDS/other are ya using? Is it a case of XP puter for plane making, and W7 puter for FSX itself? Are there any plug-ins, scripts, or secret potions to make things play nice with each other?
Will all of this be an issue down the line? If there ever is a FS 11?
I get the dreaded feeling I may end up plane making for other sims in the near future...

i run windows 7 64 bit on mine. Max 8 and 9 both run on it as does softimage and maya ( hey, it was all trial copies.. :;chuckles:;) i havent tried 2008 because i cant find it to try out..

Running Win 7 64bit and I have to use XP mode as well, as the last time I could afford 3DS Max was V5.1 and for ACAD it was V14. I have to run them both under XP and have had lock-ups as well.

I'm thinking of adding another drive in this box and just making a dual boot with my old XP or actually using VMware to set-up my original XP on here. In fact, many of the code developers and network guys I know who set up systems are actually setting up XP that way, with VMware, instead of using the virtual XP that comes with win7. I actually used VMware at my last job, as I had to test some engineering code on different OS's to make sure the software worked properly and I didn't have any problems with it.

Piglet, Have you tried the Windows 7 XP Virtual Machine as opposed to just using Compatibility Mode to launch the application? I am running Win 7 / 64 and had some problems with my older version of Magix (video editing app) and I reinstalled it in the XP Virtual Machine (XP Mode not XP Compatibility option in the file properties) and it works perfectly. This is different from using just the Compatibility Mode option in File Properties you have to create a Virtual Machine and do the basically a full setup on that Virtual Machine, separate AV, security software and all XP drivers etc. It is the same idea that Sundog mentions using VMware, the Win 7 version is just a Microsoft equivalent. I have not worked with VMWare in some time but it was the same idea. I do like the way the Win 7 XP Mode integrates into Windows 7, you still have access to all your Win 7 drives and data, I have even run an application that was on the Windows 7 C: drive in XP Mode. The only big advantage I found with windows version of a Virtual Machine over VM ware is the complete compatibility to the running Windows 7 OS while you are running the Virtual machine, I am able to have an application running in W7 and cut an paste from that app to another running in the XP Mode machine, I was never able to do things like that in VM Ware, but like I said it was an older version so they may have overcome those things.

The option for XP Mode Virtual Machine is not included with Home Premium, however it is a free download from MS, take a look on the Windows 7 home page, and if you are unable to find it let me know I have the link saved on my netbook.

Good luck, I sure hope you get this resolved, you are such a valued developer to this community and I hate to see anything that causes you grief in working your magic.

I'm running Windows 7 32 bit, 3ds Max 9 with no problems but have to (disable desktop composition) in the program properties.

I'm running Win 7 64bit, using Max 9 and Max 2008 without issue. Yes, it does switch (automatically I might add) to XP compat mode BUT... that's not such a big deal. Still works great.

As for FSXI... Ask M$. I don't know and I don't think any devs that do know would be allowed to even discuss it in public.

Max 9 SP2 runs great on 7 x64 here.

I don't even need compatiblity mode or disabled composition, but then again I don't run Aero but an entirely different shell. Max 9 and it's annoying bumping the desktop back from Aero to that fugly blue standard scheme was one of the reasons I switched to Blackbox in the first place.

Interesting
Well it's not that bad for me. I am presently making a plane, just wondered if others were going thru the same challenges with Win 7 and various Max's.
This XP Virtual Machine thingie seems interesting, I'll have to look into this...
What I meant about FS11, IF it ever appears, is all the new tricks and apps we may need.

Im still running WinXP 32bit and running Max 2008.

Feng was saying that studios have programmers now that can create their own adapters and effects for their 3D software. Something might already exist out there already. Just have to know who to talk to and ask the right questions maybe...

I tried that "disable desktop comp" setting, and it seems to help. Just had a long session, and no bugs at all.
Good Tip!:salute::wavey: And I tried to install the XP Virtual app from M$, but it won't let me run it. Well, I can if I upgrade $$$$, but I ain't biting!
So not to worry, I still can make and import planes to FSX. Texturing should be no biggie.

Hi Tim

I am running W7 Premium 32 bit and no problems apart from FSX OOMs which i never had in Vista

everything else works fine.

I tried 64 bit W7 but some of my work stuff won't run so had to return to 32 bit for now.
Regards
Rick

And I tried to install the XP Virtual app from M$, but it won't let me run it.

"XP Mode" works flawlessly on my Win 7 x64. Installed MS's "Virtual PC" first, then the virtual XP and just started working with it, although the only things I with it is flashing my mobile phone's firmware and compiling FSX flight plans.

if compatability is an issue and yo7u have an older OS running, you can use Sun microsystems "virtual Box ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ ) its free and distributed under the GNU license, and so far, i havent heard of anything Not working on it, nor any system it wont run on.. Check it out :) :)
