AR196 Project in AD2K

Texture Samples

First was created / edited with MS Paint.
Second was a much larger BMP that was reduced and blurred a bit.

it's odd...
usually, if i click on an attached image,
it will enlarge for better viewing.
no go, this time.

me thinks my eyes are failing...

Hi Smilo,

I am pretty sure you are joking, but for others who can't figure it out:
This is a basic image for working on the 4 colour and the 5 colour German WW1 Lozenge camouflage.
The image really is only 75 pixels wide. You can get larger images but need to reduce to this size for CFS texturing.
The fabric is 4.5 feet wide. The scale for texturing the upper wing of my Albatros D.Va is 15.36 feet over 256 pixels.
4.5 feet at this scale is 75 pixels.

The point I was trying to make was that by starting with a 300 pixel wide image and reducing the image to 25%, the smoothing done by GIMP makes the final result nicer than one with each pixel distinct as done in MS Paint.
Each pixel in the small image is a single colour as Hubbabubba wrote, but the multi colour effect effectively smooths the borders.

- Ivan.

Hi Ivan,

That will teach me to read a post to the end before answering...:redf:

This processing is called dithering, and I would dare to say that GIMP makes a splendid job!

I just hope that, now, you will extend your palette to the limit. My next chapter on "New ways to have fun..." starts dealing with textures; talk of a coincidence!

I will e-mail you on that subject during the week, btw...

P.S.-

This is the dithering in question on the second picture. Can't see it in the first... but it doesn't mean that it is not there.

Hi smilo,

The new attachment gizmo doesn't like windows 98SE... snif

Hello Hubbabubba,

It definitely is NOT in the first pattern which is why I picked those two to illustrate.
I thought I would finally do something on the Albatros along with the Macchi 205.

Yes, GIMP does seem to work fairly well, but I am not quite sure which algorithm to use when re-scaling the images.
This one was done with the "Cubic" algorithm, but to be honest, they all look about the same to me. Gimp also works well for the overlaying of panel lines and also for palette editing. ;-)

- Ivan.

no joke, Ivan.
i can barely see your attachments.
and to be honest,
i'm in the " for others who can't figure it out:" category.

thanks hubba, for the enlargement.
that clears it up nicely.

at this point,
i figure i need to build the parts
before i can texture them.
so, i'll wait to explore that aspect.
don't want to get side tracked, you understand.

unfortunately, at the rate i'm going,
it might be another year
before a properly textured model is done.
i guess, there's always the gray primed option
and let folks paint it as they like.
we shall see how it goes
when we get to that point.

in the mean time,
i'm still working on interior parts.
maybe a screenie later.
for now, it's just a conglomeration
of a bunch of unsequenced parts.

No, No, No, NO, NO not another year!!

Depending on what date, or who you believe... the world may end ......I have to fly that bird before
I turn to dust.

Well OK, next (not this) birthday will be fine with me. I figure I survived Katrina, I can survive the end of the world,
so long as "you also survive" in order to complete this plane.

Gotta Luv Ya Smilo

Dave :salute: :sheep:
i thought that might get your attention!
sorry for being so cruel, Dave.
i'm plugging away, honest.

last weekend, i lost hours of work.
i was taking a break,
watching a little tv,
when all of a sudden,
i looked over at my monitor
and my machine was rebooting.
WHAT THE HELL!!!
frickin' automatic updates.
of course, it was my fault
for not hitting the save file button,
but still.....
fortunately, it didn't take too long to rebuild.

here's a shot of the interior stuff so far.
-seat is too blocky
-throttle quadrant is too wide
-right rudder pedal is just a slab
for location purposes.
-i do like the yoke, though

and notice how i've angled the shot
so the parts don't overlap.
how considerate :sheep:

apparently, there's another panel
and map table behind the pilot's seat
facing aft for the observer/gunner.
not to mention the observer seat.
they're on the list

Hey Smilo,

That looks great, but I do think you are doing some serious overkill for CFS1.
Is any of this stuff visible with a pilot in place?

- Ivan.

Smilo,
Dude...the next time you want to get my attention..Fire bomb my house, kidnap my wife or kick my dog...please do not threaten me with a slow down of the 196... you had me worried for a bit.

Dave :pop4: :isadizzy:

overkill? really?

PILOT!?!?!?

you mean, i've got to build a pilot, too?
if i want to do him right,
that could take at least a year.

sorry, Dave

oh, man!

it never ceases to amaze me
how much time i can waste
just to build a piece of crap. :blind:

lots more to do on this one.

Smilo,

Why are you building stuff you can't see?
You are gonna have a tough time seeing any of the polygons other than the nose.
Eyes, Eyebrows, Lips, all those are gonna be a pain to texture so that they blend into the face.

- Ivan.

weeeeell, that's an easy one...

because i don't know what i'm doing.

actually, the eyes, brows, lips and nose,
are like little kid stickers.
they're just elongated diamonds.
i put them there, just for reference.
unless i'm mistaken, the eyes, lips and such
will be added as textures later.

now, just for clarification,
this head was built in a 1 inch to 1 foot scale.
it's the only way i can see the thing.
in other words, it is 9 feet high in the sim.
when finished, i'll use the ad2k "enlarge" feature
to reduce it to the proper size.

Hey Smilo,

If you got that shape on the first try, you are doing a whole lot better than I was.
It took me nearly a month to get my Pilot's Head and Shoulders.
That was Pilot A.

I found out later that it was way oversized so that size change along with a few minor corrections became the Pilot B that I am still using even now.

One other thing you need to watch out for (and I am presuming that AD2000 works like AF99 is that the layout of the texture is by specifying a pixel location on the texture for each vertex of your Component / Polygon. The texture files are nly 256 pixels wide and 128 pixels high, so if your vertices are very close together, the layout of the texture will not be smooth.

Looking Good!
- Ivan.

Well, if size doesn't matter, I have a few models for you;

Remark; no needs for eyes as they are suggested by prominent eyebrows. Their headphones are already in place.

Just a suggestion...:kilroy:

come on Guy,
everybody knows that size matters.
even though we like to pretend
that it doesn't.
are you sure those are headphones?
i thought these were representations
of the ancient dog people.

Ivan, i wish this was my first attempt.
no such luck...
second or third this weekend.
then there is the time spent
fooling with the jaw and trying to line it up
with the cranium. that was fun.

i should post shots of other attempts,
just for laughs.

at first, i took measurements off a wooden manikin
that we have and also off of myself.
almost poked myself in the eye
with calipers a couple times.
finally, most dimensions came from
The Measure Of Man and Woman
many thanks for that reference tip.

asper usual, this part of the project
is polygon overkill, but i just can't help myself.
especially after discovering that
an ad2k master project can be a conglomeration
of several other master projects
reconfigured into sub projects.
hard to explain, but it's a very cool feature.
and all one has to do is uncheck a box and save.

simple pleasures

a couple, three weeks ago,
i went to my local library,
looking for the Measure of Man...
of course, they did't have it,
but said they would send out a search.
since i haven't heard back,
i'd all but given up.

last night, i got a message that they found a copy.
it came from the library in Wenatchee,
way over on the other side of the Cascades.
this morning, i went in and checked it out.

i'm a happy boy___:sheep:___
