AS F-4 Phantom

Carrier launches

I tried to launch from an aircraft carrier and noticed that these AS F-4 from pack 1 do not have a launch bar on them. I added the launch assistance to the aircraft.cfg file and I guess that
was for naught as when I went thru the launch steps and pressed Shift + U to extent the launch bar.... I noticed there was none. Strange enough, I can go to max smoke and deck lauch
with out the cat hook up procedures. Oh well.

Radical Proposal for the Alphasim Phantom

Yes, indeed these have - once again - a new lease on life. Thanks again Jafo for your dedication and generosity here.

One commonly observed disappointment is the way the loadout and model choices were done. For the F-4B/J fans like me you either have no tanks, wing tanks without missiles or the center line tank with bombs. I know one would need to have the source code but would it be a huge task to remove the bombs from the latter model (or make them animated and drop-able)? Maybe adding some AIM-7/9's to the twin tank model would be less work?

They're all FS9 models, so it'd be easier(!!) to start again and make FSX-native models to achieve what you're after.
While they're in the workshop, they could be made TacPack-compatible and you could have any load-out you want.

It's all a pipe-dream, but there are FSX-native F-4s coming soon.

I actually hadn't installed the F-4 (the RF-4 from pack3) in quite some time. I had it in FSX for a time, but put it in the hangar as I wasn't flying much Military any more. Anyway, I no longer have FSX installed, just P3DV1.4 and v2.2. I installed it in both sims and discovered that in 1.4 it's perfect. . .none of the anomalies talked about here (although there is no AB effect or smoke effect), radar works and all switches work and this pre-dates anything talked about here by several years. V2.2 also "looks" correct both interior and exterior, however as I have found with all portovers that haven't been updated, nothing in the VC is clickable. All gauges function as they should but you must access them and the switches from a 2D panel or pop-up in order to make corrections or turn them on and off.

I'll just pick and choose the changes mentioned in these pages and probably pick up Jafo's excellent VC mods.

Gentleman,

just to say, even if an older threat, fantastic work at this still funny jet in FSX. Thanks again to all involved making this F-4 to a freeware gem in FSX.
Yesterday, I read all posts carefully, found Huub's great drag shute message. I followed each step and all improvements work fine.....but with the refueling probe :dejection: !!!! That's strange and I got no answer to this. May anybody help me to get the drag shute work properly please? :wavey:

Hi again,

just to say, I felt in love with the Virtavia F-4 GR2 - so another question: Due to the bad performance while exterior view, should it be useful to compile all textures into DDS format? Would that better the frames? Thank you guys.

Manschy,

I don't think it was me mentioning the drag chute, but Gray Eagle (see post 57 of this thread). I still have several FS9 installs and I fly the AS F-4 in my FS9 "Cold war" install. As you can see in the image below, the drag chute works as advertised in FS9. However, based on discussions done in the past on this subject, I have my doubts whether you can get it working in FSX.

Not based on facts but more on my personally feeling, I don't think it will make much difference when you convert all bmp files to dds files. I think the main problem is the (huge) amount of texture files which needs to be loaded.

When my understanding is correct there isn't technically much difference between extended bmp files and dds files. Most graphic drivers used in games, must flip a extended bmp file to display it. In case of a dds file this is already done. For the rest loading the textures at the virtual model works more or less the same for both formats.

Therefore theoretically it should be a tiny bit faster, but my personal experience is that I hardly have seen any changes.

Cheers,
Huub

Many many thanks, Huub!

Okay, so I will spend some more time to get out how it also can work on my F-4. Regarding the textures, that's a clear definition (and save a lot of time for compiling that I better can use now for fine tuning :applause: ). Independently, this aircraft is still a gem...

Does anyone, and i am asking everyone, have a Thunderbirds livery for thiese Phantom sets. Its the only Thunderbird plane i am missing in my collection of USAF Thunderbireds? Hope you guys can help me!!!!
