ASOBO P-51 IMPROVEMENT MOD

For those who requested it, here's the "livery only" P-51A Improvement. No more strobing prop, and no more prop disc bug, and no more smoky tinted windows! The windows are animated on the internal model only, so I may attempt to do something about that as was done on the P-51D.

In-case Randall doesn't see this right away, here is Randall's reply to someone else who recently asked the same question on Discord:

"If you push the stick forward, the tailwheel unlocks and becomes 'free castoring' like an office chair, in the sim though it's limited to about 90 degrees. When the stick is aft of neutral the tailwheel locks to 6 degrees of steering, but the wheel has to be +/- 2 degrees of center for it to 'lock' after being unlocked. Unlock the tailwheel for tight turns, otherwise you should be able to make most turns with tailwheel steering, and lots of differential braking helps too."

Just as on the real Mustang, the tailwheel is never fully locked - either free-castoring (with the stick forward), or engaged with the rudder pedals for limited tailwheel steering (6-degrees in either direction) with the stick neutral or aft. In the sim, I believe you have to push the stick all the way forward in order to unlock the tailwheel for free-castoring, where as on the real aircraft you just have to push the stick several degrees forward of neutral, at which point you can actually feel it just slightly in the stick when the tail wheel interlock disengages. You only unlock the tailwheel when you need to make tight turns, which is done at very slow speed and with differential braking. Otherwise, for s-turning, it's normal to keep the stick neutral or aft so as to simply use the tailwheel steering.

It's most common today to see Mustang pilots make tail-high main wheel landings for a few reasons - mostly because they like to keep the speed up (the common threshold speed today being about 120 mph, where as it won't stall until under 90 mph), but also because they might want to maintain better visual down the runway, and because most of the Mustangs flying today don't have as much weight in the back as on stock/original wartime examples. However, back during WWII, it was taught to make three-point landings in the P-51. As Jeff Ethel used to preach with regard to flying the P-51, he would always recommend making three point landings as then you have immediate tailwheel steering (6-degrees in either direction) as soon as you're on the runway. I always appreciate seeing any pilots today make three-point Mustang landings.
 
John nailed the locking tailwheel logic, as always. One thing to note is that the behavior "template" Asobo uses requires >=90% of forward stick input to trigger the tailwheel lock/unlock input event. That's another thing in the "queue" for systems/FM tweaks.
 
For anyone interested, the 2024 P-51D Improvement went live on FS.TO this evening. It can be found on the main mod page as an "additional file".



For the moment, the cuffed prop and landing gear fixes are still WIP. As such they have been omitted until I can figure some things out with this new "modular" model/simObject system.

Tyler/Shadow from Echo 19 contacted me several weeks ago about doing a custom livery for the Mustang in honor of the upcoming sounds release. I'm very proud to say my livery is included in the sound pack for the Reno Mustang in both 2020 and 2024. I took quite a bit of inspiration from Jim Beasley's "Bald Eagle" for this bird, and I am pretty happy with the results.

Something I noticed tonight while taxiing to parking. The gear bay doors were down even after though the gear had been down for a while. I noticed the same thing in some of the screen shots here. Don't those bay doors close once the gear is extended or am I thinking of some other aircraft?
