Azon Bomb

I've been spending alot of time in the weapons folder lately and got to looking at the "a_azon" bomb folder. The bomb appears to be incomplete and unusable having only an M3D file. So, I copied and modified the XDP file from the stock 2000lb bomb and put it in the a_azon folder. Presto! Instant Azon bomb.

It's nothing special really, just a different looking 2000lb bomb. The real Azon's were guided bombs used in the ETO, MTO and CBI with mixed results . . . the CFS3 version is unguided of course.

Has anyone done this before? If not and there is an interest I'll upload it.

ALWAYS interested!!!!

Makes a good looking bomb... Was it supposed to be rocket propelled?

:kilroy:Azon was radio-guided free-falling gravity bomb. They used a 1,000 pouind GP bomb as the basis of the bomb, and fitted it with a special octagonal electro-mechanically operated tail;fin structure.

It also had a powerful flare on the tail structure for visual tracking purposes.

It was intended as a solution of the problem of accurately dropping bombs on narrow wooden bridges found along the Burma Railway.

Only 10 B-24 crews of the 458th Bomb Group were trained to use the weapon.

There were mixed results of actual drops, and bad weather seemed to be a foil.:d

It was the U.S. 1st smart bomb, it was remotely controlled.
The bomb had a flare on the rear so the missle "pilot" could see it, It's not rocket propeled.

Alrighty then, look for it in the next day or two.

As mentioned, the Azons were free fall bombs with steering apparatus. There was a flare at the aft end so it could bee seen and therefore guided to it's target. As it fell, the aircraft that dropped it had to fly straight and not take evasive action. In the ETO this eventually led to the B-24 dropping the Azon and then breaking off with an escorting P-38 guiding the bomb to it's target. It was thought that the P-38 made for a smaller target and would be harder to shoot down.

The smoke from the third pic above is just a contrail effect that was to be used in conjunction with a flare effect. I'm having trouble with the flare staying with the bomb as it falls . . . but I'll get it sorted.

:kilroy:FOO FIGHTER, there are a number of flare effects available in a full ETO load. I am assuming that it is possible that one may work for the flare effect on your Azon bomb. You would have to experiment to sort it out.

You would just have to make sure that it does not interfere with any existing ETO effects.

We have always invited use of anything in ETO for the endeavors of others, as long as there is no interference with exisiting aspects of ETO. This is with regard to online play, of course.

I'll even volunteer to test it for you, if need be.;):d

A little confused here, the Azon was a 1000lb bomb which could be steered left or right only: Azon - azimuth only. The Razon was a 2000lb bomb which could steer up or down as well: Razon - Range and Azimuth.

Whichever you've built, please upload! :jump:

:kilroy:OK, guys, for the record, and the sake of clarity, yes, Razon was a designed 2,000 pound GP bomb, for Range and Azimuth Only. It was first used in the Korean War.

Tarzon was a device based on a 12,000 pound Tallboy and Razon, Tallboy Range and Azimuth Only. Tarzon, too, was first also first used in the Korean War.:d

Interesting thread.

From whay I've read, Azon have been used by 301st BG B17's on june 25th 1944 against Tarascon viaduc (southern France).

They were covered by P38's of 94th FS. Two B17's were used for each Azon: one to drop the bomb and the other one to guide it. Each pair was covered by 4 Lightnings!

After the B17's finished their Azon's bomb run, B24's of 456th BG performed a standard bomb run with GP bombs. Viaduc was hit but the Wehrmacht managed to repair it within a few days.

Thanks Grizzly, I really appreciate the help. I may need your assistance in finding the appropriate flare for this. The "fx_air_flare" just ignites on bomb release and drifts down like the paraflare. The "fx_flare_red" is way too large but is close to what I'm looking for, if only it was smaller. These FX are using the "emmitter_exhaust__" in the Azon's M3D. Any suggestions?

The CFS3 designers apparently had plans for the Azon but did not follow through for some reason.

As Grizzly mentioned, the VB-1 & VB-2 were called Azon's. VB-1 was 1000lb & VB-2 was 2000lbs. VB-2 is what I'm working on (see the pics in my first post). Here's a pic of VB-1 and the red flare fx.

BTW - Thrasmussen had made a VB-13 Tarzon quite a long time ago and is still available for download here . . . in one of his weapon packs I believe. I'm trying to add a flare to that as well. Here's a pic (ignore the WIP skin).

Try as I might Grizzly, I can't get any of the various flares to work. I did try the landing light effect and it seems to work pretty well but only as a 2D image. I can't get it to emit spherically. If you don't hit F9 and follow the bomb down you really can't tell the difference and it looks cool. I did change the size of the light effect and give it more of a red hue. I also used Dancat's X-4 rocket effect and gave it a slightly yellowish color. I think I've run the course on this and what you see here is how they will probably be uploaded . . . after checking with Dancat and Thrasmussen (VB-13).:mixedsmi: You'll also need the "cookie" and "tallboy" effects.

Thanks very much for these, I do look forward to dropping them on some orcs and trolls..
And placing them in some missions in ETO and MAW..
BRAVO..

:salute: :salute: :salute:

not to be canadain, but can these work in eto or already set in ,,only for cfs3, so summary can i load these in eto/maw as well
