B-24 Liberator in "hack" Italian colors by Allen...

Hi Friends,
I repeat my post in Warbirds forum:
There is NO evidence of application of standard Regia's (Dark Green/Light Grey) camouflage on Blonde Bomber II, probably ONLY Italian insignas were applied on original "Desert Pink" overall paint.
After a short testing by Italian pilots at Guidonia's airport the plane was "picked" from Germans and sent to Rechlin.

Unless you have a color pic I wouldn't be making any bold print clams...

I know of a B&W pic. I did not have this pic when I made the skin.

BLONDEBOMBERIIcatturato

As you can see the nose art is gone. The 'Blonde Bomber II' had nose art on both sides plus no US tail number can be seen at all. I know that the cross may have cover part of it up but the other part should still be seen and the full right side nose art should be seen as welll IF it only had Italian insignas applied on original "Desert Pink" overall paint.

The nose art and tail number are gone. Also look at the bomb bay doors. They are vary light compared to the rest of the B-24. This makes me think that the bomb bay doors were not painted Olive Green while the rest of it was...

EDIT:

Also here is some "evidence" that it was repainted Olive Green.

There are a couple of pictures on page 76 of 'Strangers in a Strange Land by Hans-Heiri Stapfer - Squadron/Signal Pubications inc 6047, ISBN 0-89747-198-9'. One clearly shows the Blonde Bomber II soon after 'capture' in a very light scheme (black & white), and the second photo shows it in a darker scheme with possible? fading or a section left unpainted? on the upper nose just before the cockpit (black & white).

On page 74 it is mentioned (Quote):- 'In early September of 1943 the Germans repainted the Liberator, changing the Desert Pink camouflage to a less conspicuous overall Dark Green.' (Unquote)

From past experience factors such as time of day, film type, filter on the camera, weather, season, etc can all play a part in the look of a photo. Then photos are often retouched making it harder to determine.

Based on records I have read it would appear that the Blonde Bomber II was Desert Pink until after the Germans broke the nose-wheel and needed to better hide the aircraft, I would imagine that Desert Pink would definately stand out on a German Airfield.

Regardless of what colour, the repaint is a nice scheme, Allen any chance you can do a quickie and add a Desert Pink so we can have the best of both worlds ????? :ernae::jump:

The B&W pic from Seagull V's link that I posted here my self plus Sopwith Chameleon pics prove we are all right.

The "Blonde Bomber II" started off in Italian hands in Desert pink with Italian insignas but at some point it was painted Olive Green before the Germans broke the nose-wheel as the pic show the Lib just fine. The bomb bay doors not being painted Olive Green like the rest of the Blonde Bomber II" still strange...

Looks like I will have to fix that.:icon_eek:
