B1B Lancer

I think the last freeware Bone was FS8. Other than Alpha's pay version, I don't know of any for FS9.

The best hint I can give as to its origins is a bit of the readme:

This flight model redesign arose from a passion for the I3D B-1B bomber created for FS 2002. I never could get this plane to fly very well in FS 2002. In FS 2004, it was simply unflyable. Mick Smith came out with flight dynamics which made the plane flyable, but some of the visual modeling did not work right.

I combined settings from both I3D and Mick Smith and did a lot of tweaking on my own. This made the plane flyable with pretty good visual effects...

er, 'scuse the ignorance, but last time I looked the I3D site had vanished into the ether (plane was freeware IIRC) so why all the secrecy as to its' source?

it's not really "secret". It just takes running a search engine which is a nice challenge to fill a few moments of spare time...

Yes I'd lost the original zip and only had the assembled end product including fix, so no mystery, other than srg's search engine has more brains behind it than mine did...;)
I remember thinking back then that it was quite a good Bone, (although I believe it ended up as AI) so it'll be interesting to see if it has stood the test of time.
 
I saw a B1 in flight once...just ONCE. I was sitting on top of a hill, in a clearing in the woods, and heard a very loud jet. I scanned the horizon looking for the plane, and saw nothing....I looked up and there was the B1 doing a near vertical climb right over my head.....I could see up all four engines and see the flames swirling! It was an amazing sight to say the least.

I will give the I3D Lancer another try. I know it lacks a VC (bummer) but the external modeling is pretty good.

I used to work around them all day at Dyess. The base hospital is five miles from the runway, but the windows still rattled every time one took off!

There was the idea of a supersonic Vulcan but it never got passed that, plus a bomber Concorde. Shame they didn't come to fruition.

I like the bone, but prefer the Buff (the great 52).

JD I worked on B-52s my first 4 years in the Air Force, Kinchloe AFB, Michigan. I got a good one of those, and I got an OK B2 but didn't have a B1. All things considered I think (just my opinion mind you) the B1 should be nicknamed "Un-necessary Boondogle" and the B2 "Ultra Expensive Boondogle" just my opinion. I think the way things are going, the days of the big bomber and pilots in the cockpit may be comimg to an end, probably in this century if not sooner. Again just my opinion.
 
I always thought that I3D Lancer was a pretty nice looking model. The FDE fix seemed to make it flyable, at least I was able to survive a couple of my landing attempts (that's how I judge whether an airplane is flyable).

I always wished someone would be able to finish texturing the VC, do you need the source code to do that?
 
I was surprised to find that the plane does have a VC (unfinished)...which is a shame as what is done in the VC looks nice.

Here are the eyepoint settings to put you into proper position in the VC:

I took the model into a hex editor and found the VC bits and parts and am going to try to get the VC populated with gauges. Nothing I can do about the untextured bits...wish there was. Looking in the texture folders, the textures are them for the VC parts and pilots...but it seems that they released this plane in an unfinished state....for what ever reasons.
