Believe it or not....

.... but half an hour ago i was at my computer still reading up about MSFS2024 here and at Avsim and searching and ordering an In-line Diffusor for my new aquarium in between. And now, at this moment as i'm typing this, MSFS2024 is running in the background and i made my first flight in MSFS2024 !!

Yessir, believe it or not ! In this bygone half hour i also thought why not have a look at the Steam shop and see what's going on with MSFS2024 overthere. I did have absolutely no intention of buying the thing, needing a new W11 computer to start with and constantly reading bad things about it, how we're all still better off with MSFS2020 apart from the few fairly positive reactions i've read. Arrived at the Steam shop i put MSFS2024 in the search bar and up it came along with a message "This title is already in your Library" and a button that said "Play Now".

I put on my dummest face and just for the heck of it hit that button. What could go wrong ? We'll see when and where the ship will sink.

Some time ago i pre-ordered MSFS2024 via Steam ( bought MSFS2020 also via Steam) just to get that wonderful CL-415. But i've read about MSFS2024 could only be installed/played with a so called 'TPM' gadget and Windows 11. I even opened a thread about that right here. So this now has been proven to be complete bull because i am now flying MSFS2024 on a Windows 10 system with no TPM activated whatsoever ! How about that, huh..... 😃

After pushing the "Play Now" button MSFS2024 installed within like 15 minutes, all that was needed furthermore was to enter my MS account password, choose one of the ugly faces for my avatar et voila, just flown a bit above my own country. Must say errrrmmmm,,,,, I LOVE IT !!

Immidiately one thing i find dramatically terribly awful and even idiotic : ATC is in Dutch !!!! Sjeeeeeshhhhh !!! There it is again, isn't it.... Xbox drama rearing its ugly head !! "Childern don't speak a foreign language yet" ! Again Sjeeeeeessshhh !! Talk about ruining a good game.... :banghead::173go1::boxing:

Otherwise (and until (maybe) all hell brakes lose) i LOVE what i see so far !! "Feels" good to ! I think i can easily get accustomed to the new UI . I could more or less fly with my MSFS2020 programmed flightstick, only throttle reversed and change camera button doesn't work (anyone knows the key to change camera view ? Thanks ! ;-)

All in all, half an hour ago i still was happy not to have rushed to buy a new 'mandatory' W11 system, forget about MSFS2024 until the dust had settled, like maybe in a month or so but here i am now flying MSFS2024 and sofar loving the heck out of it !!

Here in the Netherlands lived a poet in the 16th century called Bredero who's saying became famous : "Het kan verkeren" ( the tables turn/ things can happen)

He sure was right ! One happy MSFS2024 camper here !! 😎

Haha , yeh ..**** happens. There is an option within fs24 to set your controls to fs20 settings.

See, not that bad at all ! Thanks Spook ! :encouragement:

Haven't had time to check out the menu's and all that. Just too exited about what i see and feel, most important. Did you visit our little Shangri La at the North Sea already ? Noticed the dutch ATC ?..... Actually done quite well as far as i heard it. It's the ease of ignoring the world aviation rule of using the English language for all ATC communication that i find rather off putting. That's not what you'd hear if you'd tap into RW EHAM ATC. Actually quite rediculous, isn't it..

I do have a feeling it might be possible to change it back to English or use English language as default. Of course no clue yet if current MSFS2024 ATC is worth to use it in the first place.

Atc is even worse as it was in fs20 imho . I , just like you only did 1 quick flight in fs24. From ehhv to ehtx but i never heard dutch atc tbh so i guess its a setting. The thing i noticed is that there are too many trees. On ehhv , on jetties , they are all over the place 🤣

It still needs control functions in many aircraft, it lacks proper buildings for two home airports, it still needs a Developer's Kit and instructions on how to use it. It still needs some way to adjust vehicular traffic and aircraft traffic on the tarmac. But as far as flying in it, when the bandwidth is there, it's a dream. I still find it easier to fly IFR (I follow roads) in MSFS 2020. But the major roads are done better in 2024, however, for my area, there is far too much traffic.

On my flights in anything I have flown, I can only hear atc when they are talking to other aircraft, never mine. The text shows in the log, but no voice, even when I "speak" to them or to the local tower/airspace. I do hear ATIS, but very little else, while the log is printing out faster than I can read it. And since the window cannot be expanded, unlike in msfs2020, it disapears before I can read it. I've started just turning off the radios after checking ATIS.

I've not found a way to shut off the car and truck traffic. It's quite annoying. Lots of mesh issues when you start looking around more closely. Monument Valley detail looks nothing like the splash screen video. Wave and water physics are vastly improved. No waterfalls in Yosemite, neither static or animated, nothing, nada. But I did see some deer running through a field, then disappeared. As has been reported, no pilots in ported 2020 aircraft. Flying feels seems better, but that is purely subjective. The Seestar is great! No native flyby? WTF. Seems just like the early daze of MS 2020. I assume it will take 48 months to get things cleaned up to the point where MS 2020 is today.

Ok, well, here i am and that´s it for today.

While i managed to start the engine, brake handle off, can´t get it to move because i can´t seem to remove the wheel chocks. Overwhelmed with the beauty of it all and exhausted by trying things to get working and mostly failed. Do love the way i can grab the door handle from the outside, door opens and next i am transferred into my seat behind the stick. Same goes for grabbing the door handle from the inside. Cool !

Yesterday, when i flew for a while i started the flight in the air. Now trying cold and dark but still getting familiar with the UI and keys and so on.

Found ATC language easily adapted. Not sure but it's not like ATC can be in any language, can it ? (i do get a message like 'loading languages' when 2024 starts loading, takes a while too.... maybe a bypass could be found ? I mean, wtf is MS thinking ?...)

I did see a glimpse of the integrated FCR (Flightsim Control Replay) menu but did not investigate further ( i'm almost sure they did not manage to get a good working Fly-By camera on board this time around).

Still at awe with everything i see so far in MSFS2024 (apart from the flying thru the clouds bit but let's not get into that ;-) i'm sure i'll get things to work eventually. I know already that's not going to be easy peasy but i also know now it's absolutely worth it ! :encouragement:

As far as I know, nobody can remove the chocks on the ground. It is a big complaint in the MSFS2024 support forums.

I have been able to remove the chocks by clicking on them before entering the cockpit. Same with the "Remove Before Flight" covers...at least with the Caravan.

Try out different angles and distances, they can be fidgety. Stoop down, get on your knees, and while your down there start begging.

Ah, Ok, thanks Don ! Let's try them all then ;-) Checking the wheels i got green check marks.

Thanks paiken ! I'll try the Caravan next.

Thanks Lou ! Seriously, can/should you get down on your knees to remove the chocks ? Do you have a 'get down' key, please ?.. :encouragement:

If you're using an Xbox controller, it's the 'X' key that allows you to kneel down (which I've had to use quite a bit doing the preflights). Additionally, holding the right trigger button while moving allows you to move faster. I've also found on several aircraft that you can walk up onto the wings. It took a little getting used to the different controller inputs/functions between the Xbox controller and the mouse, but I've been able to remove the chocks (and engine, pitot and static covers) from every aircraft I've looked at, that have them. I've also had it happen where I've missed removing a cover from either the pitot tube or static port, and I end up not having airspeed and/or altimeter that doesn't want to work when I takeoff.

Also, if you're in the preflight mode and you want to get into the aircraft quickly, without having to find the right door/entry point, you can simply use Shift+C (if you're using the MSFS 2024 key bindings), or assign the function "Take Control of Character" to a key binding of your choice.

Yes, thanks John, all accounted for. :encouragement:

I bet you know the position of the parking brake in the HU-16 ? I'm ready to taxi, done all the preflight stuff, chocks away, engines running but she won't move an inch. If i check the PB in the checklist the view takes me to the hydraulic handpump. That can't be the PB, can it ? In any case, the pump handle works alright but the Albatross won't put a foot forward. Used to be 'B' in 2020 but not anymore in 2024. ( it's an amazing model, isn't it ! A bit dissapointed with the engines sound but i can't wait to take her up and do a water landing ! )

I also found that Shift+C combo by coincidence. Very nice ! No doubt there's a lot more where that came from. ;-)

Yes, i must have an Xbox controller somewhere and i will plug it in asap. You can do everything by using the keys as well, including removing the wheel chocks ( tried the Optica and Albatross, no problem anymore) but no doubt it'll work a lot better with that Xbox controller. I understand it may work straight away ? No need to program anything ?

I have a lot of problems with parking brakes, it seems I need to assign a new key for every flight almost...
and even then, sometimes the aircraft moves an inch and then remains stuck, really annoying.
This way I discovered the slew mode...

I've always assigned the parking brake function to a button on my joystick and yoke, and in MSFS 2024 I have assigned each aircraft I've flown either my saved joystick or my saved yoke profiles. At least doing it that way I haven't run into any issues with the parking brake function. Of course if you've forgotten to remove the chocks, you might think the parking brake is stuck.

With regard to keyboard functions, I selected the MSFS 2020 keyboard option, and then just changed a couple of the keys to new MSFS 2024 functions (such as setting 'Shift+C' for the "Take Control of Character" function), and then set that new profile as default for all of my MSFS 2024 aircraft (so I haven't had to apply it to each aircraft individually). Additionally, I've saved a few different profiles for my Honeycomb Bravo (engine controls), and when I go to fly a new aircraft I haven't flown yet I simply select one of those profiles I've saved and it sets it permanently for that aircraft - very quick and easy.

The sim interfacing is made to be effective when running on Xbox, so even on PC, if you have an Xbox controller (as I always made great use of in '2020 as well, alongside all of my other peripherals) it makes navigating/using the sim easier - especially when assigning controller bindings, moving around the cockpit/interior and the exterior of the aircraft, and when in showcase/drone camera mode, the Xbox controller makes it very natural. Of course the sim already comes with a full MSFS 2024 profile for the Xbox controller as default.

I also found out today, while playing with the Xbox controller, that you can create your own flyby mode while using the showcase camera. While in showcase camera mode, move the camera out as far as you desire from the aircraft, and then press the 'A' key, which will un-dock the camera from the aircraft and it will remain stationary as the aircraft flies by (you can also pan the camera, to your hearts desire, as the aircraft flies by). Pressing 'A' again will re-dock the camera to follow with the aircraft once again.
