My granddaughter was here this afternoon with a friend and they spent time on the computer of course. Somewhere along the way they picked up either a true virus or something disguising itself as one.

I can access the internet, but it won't allow me to activate any programs. I was going to download and run Adaware, but it won't allow the executable to run.

If I restore to an earlier point will that work?
 
It might, I don't think it can hurt but you might hold off until you have exhausted trying to find the source. Try opening the MS web page, as I recall that a recent virus would not allow that. It may help identify the culprit.
Can you not download and install anything? If you find what looks like a suspect program that is the cause, REVO uninstaller might get it if you can install it. It is free and has worked very well for me and others. Perhaps someone else here can walk you through a SAFE MODE start up and how to use that to find the problem. I'm not familiar with that process.
As far as Adaware, I can't get it to run on a laptop either. I think that software has a bug or two so don't give up hope if that one won't install. Try the freebies Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) and Spybot ( http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) and run those if you can.

Falcon409, try going to ESET.com and use their online scanner. It's free and it works well. They are the makers of NOD32. If you cannot download the .exe file for the scanner, let me know and I will email to you. It's only 2.54 MB.

Thanks guys, finally got it removed. Man what a bear. It would stop any executable files, so basically I couldn't run any programs to attack it. I finally rebooted in safe mode which allowed me to run "Malwarebytes". It found the offending files (after a little over an hour of scanning) and I got them deleted. Back on track now. Thanks for the assist.:salute:

I have a question. Just for craps and giggles I downloaded and ran the above "MALbytes" program and found a bunch of stuff but it also identified some FS2004 exe files as being infected.......


I didn't delete them but wonder if I should. I know one of them was the Ciel FAU-7.

Any suggestions?
 
I've found that Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch Live will often identify installer files as malware. (As if installers weren't annoying enough by themselves...)

It also sometimes identifies model files as lalware and quarantines them, requiring that they be added to two different ignore lists before they'll stay out of the quarantine folder.

Very annoying, but I'd feel unprotected without Ad-Aware; it's an important piece of my security suite. Fortunately these glitches don't happen very often.

My guess is that those FS files your program found are probably OK; I've never run into an FS download that wasn't OK. But then, I only download from the better-known and reputable sites. As for anything else, I'd suggest that you check further to identify the files before deciding whether to restore them.
 
Well, I'm going to close this thread out. Problem solved and hopefully, nothing further will pop up (literally), lol. Thanks for the assist.:salute:
