Boulton Paul Sea Balliol for FS9

The RAF version is as said before to follow on from the Naval version, but there are a number of differences between the two and the panel needs a major overhaul as weird as it may seem, it is a lot different from the Sea Balliol. At the moment I'm researching into gunsights, but I hope when released she will be as popular as the earlier release.

I sent Peter all of our repaint material along with the various magazine articles and photos, so there should be plenty of schemes emerging from his paintshop for both aeroplanes. The above one, looks very colourful indeed - the FAA had a habit of putting dayglo on its types in the 50s and 60s!

What a nice airplane. Flew it last night out of NAS North Island (KNZY) in San Diego and did a few landings aboard Paul Clawson's USS Lexington (CV-2) off Point Loma. With no wind down the deck (I always forget to add it, LOL) I was able to deck-launch with just a brief anxious moment of stall as I came off the bow. Thank you Dave Molyneaux and friends for making this plane available as freeware.

Let me add my congratulations on a superb new release as well. As others have mentioned stunning visuals combined with a nice sound set don't leave much to be desired.

I was amazed however that there is no radio navigation equipment at all in the aircraft. Knowing how accurately you guys go about this business I assume this was true in real life as well. I guess I better practice my pilotage ;)

For my personal taste the pitch axis was a bit too responsive, but again that is likely true to life as well. I just like things a bit more sedate :D

Balliol Nav Aids

You're right Stefan - there were no nav aids fitted to these 1950's Fleet Air Arm advanced trainers. Their main purpose was to allow pilots to practice deck comings & goings particularly on shore-based marked out 'carrier decks'. A V.H.F. comms radio was it's only 'aid'.
I assume for any longer flight they used the compass and MK1 eyeball.
I'm now working on its RAF equivalent and, yes, that was fitted with a tunable beam approach set (T.B.A.) and indicator and V.H.F. comms radios. There are no signs of any long distance nav aids though. :eek:
Yes, it is a bit twitchy in pitch - to quote from the pilots notes " the aircraft is pleasant to fly, the controls being well-harmonised, light and effective. Stability about all axes is good, though some patience is required to trim the aircraft."

Thanks for that explanation on the NAV aids. Pretty much what I had figured then.

As for the pitch I do not mean to critique the FDE. I have not flown the real thing or for that matter anything coming close to it. Unless a T-6 counts ;)
FS control feel and reaction varies greatly as we have found from one setup to the next. Even with all settings regarding the realism sliders being equal. Change one of those between the developers PC and the end users and again you have a whole new equation.


For me reducing the pitch sensitivity created that control harmony mentioned in the pilot notes ;)

Glad as always that you are enjoying another of our aeroplanes. I remarked as to the elevators during the beta testing, but we were lucky enough to find someone that had flown Balliols whilst in the RAF at Colerne and they also tested the model. They were so pleased with it and said it brought back a lot of memories!!! This is what we like to hear and what we strive to do, in that to build an accurate model, but within the confines of course of the simulator.

There is indeed and not just a change of paint either. Very much different than the naval version and this time equipped with working armament. Just right for scaring AI traffic!!!

Hope you all enjoy it as much as you have with the Sea Balliol, which has become one of our most favoured models.
