BSK Malta Scenery Problems

Hi guys!

I have a big problem with Bruno´s Malta scenery: Lots of CTDs.
It happens when flying around Valetta and Hal Far airfield. Sometimes even before taking off there. Missions crash as well as Free Flight. I tried different airplanes, but they are not the problem.
The crashes don´t happen always, but still more than 50% of the time.

I installed the scenery on a fresh install, following Rami´s MTO Install Guide to the letter.

Question: Does anyone else have the same problem? Maybe someone found a solution?

I started to make some missions around Malta, but with the program crashing all the time this is useless.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

With my old computer, everything was as you describe it. My new computer seems to be handling Malta a lot better. I'm not sure if there may be a fault in one of the scenery files or textures. I'll fly some more Malta missions and report back.

In the meantime I tried if the ctd also happens if I deactivate the GSL for Malta; it does, so that´s not the problem either.
Changing the sequence of entries in the Scenery config also has no effect.

I have heard that sometimes a texture file can cause ctd, but how find the one that´s the problem, if it is indeed caused by such a file?

Is it possible that the scenery is too much for an older computer (5 years)?

Good morning,

I know from experience dealing with the threads on the subject that Malta is always a bugaboo. One member I spoke with last night on Skype reminded me why. I've always been mystified why the flatten switch and Sander's mesh don't work well together, and it turns out on my install, I had done the following...

From the Eurw folder, I removed the 951180.bgl file and the 951190.bgl file.

From the Global_Exclude folder, I removed the same-numbered files there as well.

I totally forgot about that when I wrote the install guides, because I did that so long ago. With those files removed, the flatten switch, as per Brunosk's original instructions, will work just fine.

Devildog, hopefully you'll get a chance to read this...lol :mixedsmi:

Wow

Can that be done later too? I NEVER got to fly the "Malta Spitfire" campaign, and would love to. I have a MTO install as per your excellent tutorial (best idea anyone ever had, making those) yet still no go. If I can just find and delete those files, will that maybe solve my problems?

Finn,

Go for it...it shouldn't affect the campaign at all. Sander's files, combined with the flatten, apparently affect the northern side of Malta.

I'd like to know if this solves anyone's problem, actually.

:isadizzy:I' m a bit confused (as usual). I find several EURW 951180 - nothing with just that name, but names like 951180A16N.bgl and other with the same number but with these things pun in the end in the same way: cst.bgl, lwm_3.bgl, RD_8.bgl and st_8.bgl. And in global exclude I find 951180excl_3.bgl and 951190excl_3.bgl. I don' t think you ment me to delete those files, did you?

Thanks for the tip Rami, but my Malta install seems to work fine with these files included as opposed to without them. The scenery topography, shorelines and overall texturing is perfect, all objects appear to be properly placed and textured and the sim has no CTD hiccups. When i removed the files to test your suggestion, i get CTD's when panning views in 2D mode. Maybe the problems reported have more to do with improperly formatted scenery hierarchy than the presence (or absence) of these files. And then there's always the mysterious gremlins to contend with...

Rami, what kind of problems do these files cause? In my current MTO install I cannot fly at Malta at all, because I almost always get a ctd (each time I fly over the northern part of the island). Could this problem be related to this somehow?

Greetings all,

I was looking at BSK's Malta scenery library objects with a view of taking some pictures of them for the INFO folder, when I discovered a duplication with BSK_Filfla.

In the BSK_Filfla.bgl you will find:

ObjID( 4847D155 40D20396 09874E9E A1994E14 )
LibObj(
PWR 100
SIZE 360
SCALE 0.500
TYPE 0
NAME "BSK_Filfla" )
BGLVersion( 0800 )
TextureList( 0
1 FF 255 255 255 0 44.16674
BSK_VALETTA_ROCKS.BMP ; texture 0
1 FF 255 255 255 0 556.37347
FILFLA.BMP . . . etc

While in the bsk_malta.bgl you will find:

ObjID( BA05BA09 23505517 552822A9 E7212764 )
LibObj(
PWR 0
SIZE 1500
SCALE 0.500
TYPE 0
NAME "BSK_Filfla" )
IfVarAnd( :L1A58B3 0024 0040 )
Jump( :L1A58B9 )
:L1A58B3
Jump32( :L1A7ABD )
:L1A58B9
BGLVersion( 0800 )
TextureList( 0
1 FF 255 255 255 0 44.16674
BSK_VALETTA_ROCKS.BMP ; texture 0
1 FF 255 255 255 0 556.37347
FILFLA.BMP . . . etc

Note the GUID, PWR and SIZE are different. Should one of these entries be deleted and could this be the cause or one of the causes for occasional CTDs with the Malta scenery?

Kevin,

That's certainly an interesting theory. How would you test it?

BTW...check your e-mail for some goodies.

Hi Andrew,

I removed the BSK_Filfla.bgl but that got rid of Filfla island, so I restored that file. I disassembled the BSK_Malta.bgl and removed the Filfla entry, but I was unable to reassemble the file because of too many errors.

Perhaps renaming one of the entries is all that is needed, then again maybe it makes no difference having two library objects with the same name.

Thanks very much for fixing the two Italian GSLs.

Kevin

Hi kdriver,

I can't remember which is which but if the object is in the GLS layer the sim uses the "obj id" number and if the object is placed using Mission Builder the sim uses the "Name".

This name problem could cause CTD.

The area flattens for the Hal Far airfield and to a lesser extent the Ta Kali airfield in my Med theater build are not working. Hal Far in particular is bad, 75% of it is covered by ground elevations and can't be used. the harbors areas also have similar problems with the ground elevation overwhelming the sea level areas. I have Rhumbaflappy mesh and water masks installed and for some reason the BSK A16N.bgls (the flatten area bgl) don't seem to work.
:banghead:
BTW my Med install is exactly as Rami's guide has it.

Anyone else have the issue or is it just my installation?

Kurt,

I'm not sure whether it's in the guide or not, but subsequent discoveries and experiments on my side have led me to the conclusion that leaving the flatten line in from the BSK_Malta package actually works the best.

The actual airfields themselves have no flattens, because Bruno wanted them to be part of the natural terrain.

Thanks B24Guy and hewman100,

I investigated further and found that Filfla isn't used as a GSL object in the Malta.GSL file. Instead it has its own bgl which resides in the Malta scenery folder. This bgl calls for the GUID of BSK_Filfla.bgl. The other entry in the BSK_Malta.bgl doesn't appear to be used for Filfla. Perhaps it's used in one of the other Malta scenery bgl files. In any case the duplication of names appears to be irrelevant unless it's called up as a GSL object.
