Chipmunk

Thank you for the heads-up, Naki! I'm looking forward to following its development. It will be nice to see a brand new take on the Chipmunk.

Speaking of DH Chipmunks, there have been seven at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this week, all parked together.

Hey John, are you still modeling?

Hey John, are you still modeling?
Not really, Ted. I've still got my P-39Q and B-25J in 3DS Max, that I pull out every now and then and plug a bit more work into. However, it's hard to remain motivated with them for very long, especially with how much time simply evaporates when one gets into 3D modeling. I know I should get back into it again - the P-39 internal model has been about 99% completed, and the external model is probably about 85% completed (namely just gear wells to do), I just need to focus some energy to it again. These days, with how complex texturing has become, I'm still using modeling software on a daily basis to load other people's models to paint.

I've been out of it for years now (P3Dv3). I almost forgot how to use PS. I got a spark in November 2024 and shot some images over to Manfred to see if he was interested in reviving his C-117D. I wanted to give the Super the same detail I did with the C-47. He, being retired and all, gave it a shot, and it panned out well. It's a slow drag because my motivation wanes, but I get spurts working on it. I'm testing the Materialize program as of late. I may get into MSFS later this year.

It is no secret that the chipmunk is my all-time favourite aircraft in real life and in the various incarnations of Microsoft flight simulator. Since I have not yet moved to FS 2024, I wonder if the developer would consider making this available for 2020 as well. And also I hope they produce the Canadian bubble cockpit version.

I hope they will include the Super Chipmunks of Art Scholl. Having received my flight training at Rialto,CA and the occasional stern admonition from Judy Scholl, I would definitely be lining up to purchase. I have an Aileron from one of them that was damaged in a minor hangar incident.
Speaking of Ailerons, many people still think Ailerons the dog flew with Art during his aerobatic performances. Fake news, as we say today, or great showmanship. Aileron loved to fly and would happily jump in anytime Art would climb in to start the show. He would sit on his lap on the way to the runway and was clearly visible to the crowd on the flightline. Before closing the canopy Aileron would jump out at the runup area and then be secretly collected by Judy or one of the team and spirited to the other end of the runway, where he would jump back in after Art had landed. They then taxied back to the cheering crowd where Aileron would be celebrated as much as the pilot😂😂

LDR Development were working on a Chipmunk for FSX years ago and one of the models we were going to do was the Super Chipmunk. I had been in contact with Art and he had approved our project and we had agreed that his mechanic would provide digital photos of the cockpit(s) and gauges so that I could replicate his very unique layout but that never happened unfortunately. It was about the time that Just Flight released their payware version of the regular Chippy for FSX and we just abandoned the project with the outside model complete but with no cockpits (the regular Chippys were much further along).

The Chippy is very dear to my heart as it is the first type I flew as a spotty 13 year old kid in the Air Cadets back in the UK in 1970! That's the main reason why I have always used a Chippy as my avatar on all the flight sim forums!

One of Arts Chipmunks was sold to a private owner/collector as I recall and the other one of course is hanging in the Smithsonian. So a bit out of reach for current pictures I am afraid.
I could ask a good friend who flew occasionally with Art if he still has anything on the Supers. I honestly do not know if Judy is still around. She moved the FBO when Rialto was closed, but that was eleven years ago and she was no spring chicken then. Though always tough as nails.😂
