Conspicuous by Their Absence

GIMP 2.6

Hello Hubbabubba,

I am using GIMP Version 2.6 which may not be the latest.

Here is how it can be done:
1. Go to the "Windows" Pulldown Menu.
2. Select "Dockable Dialogs" - "Colormap"
3. Right Click on the Color you want to change
4. Save the File.

Worked for me.

I am attempting here to get a Light Olive / Gray Green that was the colour on the A6M2 based on my perception of what was on Iida's wreckage at Pearl Harbor.

Hi Ivan,

My own version of GIMP is 2.2 and in French but, following your procedure, I was able to get there.

My first impression is that it is as complicated as getting to the CFS1 download section at SOH :)mixedsmi:).

But its free, and the final window is quite complete. Nice find!:applause:

Hi Hubbabubba,

Cool, Isn't it?

I have been looking for a free downloadable utility to do this for several months and last evening after a very strenuous day at work, I decided to do a Google serarch on GIMP Palette Editor or something along those lines. The instructions didn't really match my version of GIMP, but I could see that I could exchange a Palette if I wanted to. I could also enter one of my own Palettes (FS98 / CFS) into the stored set and edit that. That is when I made the original post.

When I got home, I found the alternative method I described which was a whole lot simpler than the first method I found earlier.

You are right, GIMP is very full featured but its layout isn't very intuitive.

Another Aircraft Project

Hello All,

As Hubbabubba and Smilo were discussing in the thread here, I like to split time on multiple projects.

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?57856-AR196-Project-in-AD2K/page13

I am debating on what should be the next project on the list. Any suggestions? On the short list are the Airacobra, Me 109, J2M Raiden, and N1K Shiden. Also soon to appear on the build list but not for an immediate project is the Curtiss P-6E Hawk.

- Ivan.

it does seem that, with your gimp discovery,
finishing the c205 would be a good idea.

as for a new project,
you've been talking about
doing a 109 for a long time.
but, as always, it's your call.

and yes, i agree with hubba,
nice gimp find.

Hello No Dice, Smilo,

Why are you both interested in the Macchi C205? There are already a couple fairly good ones out there. Mine won't be anything that different. Of course I believe it will be better, but that is mostly arrogance on my part. Strangely enough, just about everything else is done on that plane other than a ReadMe, Textures and a couple Screenshots.

I don't really see a connection between my recent experiments with GIMP, palettes and such and the Macchi. I need to use GIMP for the Macchi, but it is much more important for the A6M2 Model 21 Rei Shiki Sentoki. I am still stuck on a panel for that plane. Anything that looks like the real control panel will have most of its gauges not showing unless the panel is very high.

BTW, It didn't take too long for both Hawk 81s to get all their downloads. I figure 18 or so is pretty much what CFS aeroplanes get these days and both are very near that. Perhaps it is time to convert that project into a Hawk 75?

- Ivan.

jeez, sorry.
i thought i was encouraging you
to finish the project.

as i recall, you asked what to do for your tutorial.
then, you weren't happy with our choice,
wondered why we didn't choose another from the list,
but went ahead and did the 205, anyway,
even though it wasn't the ac you wanted to build.
and, imho, it is a job well done.

when Dave replied to your latest project inquiry
with the 205. i thought, sure, why not see it finished.

honestly, it doesn't really matter
to me what you do next.
it's your call.
what ever you do will be great. no doubt.

i've learned the hard way
not to get to excited about a potential project.
all i can do is offer encouragement
as it progresses down the line
and hope that maybe it will be completed.

i've made my suggestions/requests
several times in the past
and see no point in doing it again.
as i see it, it's down to this,
if i want something that bad,
do it myself, or shut up and wait.

Fun versus No Fun

Hi Smilo,

I believe the reason I keep getting to the same stage of projects is because some parts are "Fun" to do and some parts are too much like work. 3D Design and looking over drawings and photographs trying to get a mental picture of their shape and putting that down into a wire frame project is relaxing. The Paint Layout such as what remains for the Macchi C205 is tedious though rewarding. The SCASM fixes are tedious and not very rewarding. The AIR file stuff such as what remains for the FW 190A and the B-25C Mitchell is tedious, especially if I can't figure out what is going wrong. The B-25 shares a similar problem to that of the Hawk 81. The difference is while that is not critical and not all that noticeable on the P-40 / Hawk 81, it is VERY important for the B-25 because it was a major factor that influenced the design in a significant way.

At the moment, I am also trying to do some research regarding aircraft armament for some DP file consistency between aircraft. I should start an entirely new thread on that!

- Ivan.

that's understandable. i mean,
after all, it is a hobby, isn't it?
i find that if i step away for a while,
things usually clear up.

i can see how dealing with air files
can make one a little crazy.
my experience with them is limited,
but i find that i'm avoiding messing with them.

for example, i'm having trouble
getting the spoiler to work
on certain air files.
i can see the triggers
and have made the changes.
no joy.
i even looked at one from an ac
that has a spoiler, noted the settings,
transposed them to the other air file,
still no joy.
it doesn't make sense,
unless, it's one of those unknown settings.

not fun, not fun at all.

anyway, have fun and share
what you want, when you can.
you know we will always
appreciate what we get.

The Spoiler ANGLE is the not so obvious part but I believe it is the most important part. If it is zero, the Spoilers don't work. If it is non-zero, the Spoilers work. I don't think the "Spoiler Available" value has any effect at all. I will go back to my notes and check to confirm, but this is what I remember at the moment.

At the moment I am going in LOTS of different directions and that is not productive either, but it IS educational.

Did you know that the 12.7 mm MG on the Ki-61 used explosive ammunition for extra power? Its ammunition was nearly identical otherwise to the 12.7 mm MG that I already put into the Macchi C205. This caliber was dimensionally identical to the Vickers .50 caliber MG that was never adopted by the British. The Japanese ammunition also had a tendency to explode just past the gun's muzzle which caused really bad effects on aircraft with cowl mounted guns such as the Ki-43 Hayabusa series. I don't suppose it did anything serious on the Ki-61 which had these guns mounted in the wings. The weight of a single round and link is 3.63 ounces at least on the Italian gun which I will also be using for the Japanese gun.

Still having fun!
- Ivan.

Last night I was revisiting this project and trying to figure out how much work it would take to bring it to release quality. It needs the SCASM Virtual Cockpit but most of it is already done with the Birdcage Corsair's release.

NYC Vacation

The standard F4U-1A Corsair got released several weeks back. No big surprise. There are some things that still need fixed, but they will happen in time. I thought there was more continuity in this thread about the recent Corsair but I can't seem to find it right now.

I have been on vacation in NYC with my family this week. Internet is very intermittent and not fast. This week is my kids' Spring Break. We haven't been spending all that much time in the apartment and when we do, my Internet access is not high on the list of priorities.

sorry for taking that line out of context,
but it kinda made me chuckle.
to me, this thread has always been incongruous.
not that it's a bad thing...
it seems to be a starting off place
for subjects that move to other threads
where they are explored in greater detail.

i thought the corsair discussion moved on to
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?64376-Need-for-Research
although, imo, the continuity of that thread,
and others, has been lost due the removal of attachments.
apparently, they disappeared after a site "upgrade",
or something like that, a week or so ago.
the last i heard was last saturday.
it was being looked into.

on the bright side,
looking to the right,
i see a lot more smilies :sheep:

my goodness.
that turned out rather nicely.
she's even got shine.
care to share the name of the artist?

Haven't heard from him in a while: PJ Dunbar.

There are some issues I see though:

The Pilot looks like the CFS stock pilot and I like mine better.
The Colour lines don't follow through the Wing Fillet.
The Colour scheme is that of a Hawk 81 but the model is a Hawk 87.

The Headrest isn't textured but that is my fault since I didn't texture that part on my first release of this plane.

It sure is pretty, isn't it?

Last time he gave me news, 2-3 years ago, he was leaving Belgium for Africa with his wife.

Hey Paul, if you come near a keyboard, drop us a few lines!:wavey:
