I'm wondering... Do those huge wings provide any usefull downforce at all, or are they just there to provide space for sponsors ?

IIRC they provide substantial down-force (Important for a car that wheel stands like a bike!) and side stability.
And of course, advertising space ..........
While I have great respect for today's drivers I really hate the 'wings'.
Way back when I was far younger we were regulars at the local 'Speedway', but only when bikes and 'proper' sprinters/midgets were the main contenders.
Nothing quite like a warm Summer night and the howl of a 90ci Offy scenting the air with Castrol R and Methanol to give me goose bumps and a chubby.

thay do add downforce,and yes its usefull,but you have to have both sets of wings,you lose the nose wing and it just wont turn,and if you "romp" on it,,it will lift both front tires at a time you just dont want them to lift..lol..ive run both winged and non winged,both are alot of fun to run,i hate to say it,but the winged cars are easier to drive really..takes more skill in a non winged car.lots of throttle control needed.more stagger in the rear tires aswell.
bottomline..yes the wings do add usefull downforce.
i watched a mixed show once at the Hanford Calif speedway ,the non winged cars did well but the winged cars had the advantage for sure.the non winged cars turned better in my opinion,but the winged cars out ran them on the straights.
but mind you,this is a hot point for sprint car/midget fans and drivers....most either love or hate one of the others..if that made sense.
