Cri-cri props

My personal ride, lol
The texture setup for this airplane is interesting. One texture is for the interior/VC and how the exterior appears as viewed from the cockpit. The other texture (almost identical) is the actual exterior as viewed from outside and the cockpit/VC as viewed from that perspective. It's easy to miss something when working on the VC until you are in the sim, in the cockpit and look outside and wonder why the rivets don't show, lol.

Fascinating aircraft - there are quite a lot of You Tube videos about. It looks for all the world like a large model aircraft - and sounds like one too!
Nice work Ed:applause:

Thanks Roger. . .DevOne (Keith) is doing a lot on this as well, most notably adding a pilot in the external view. I believe he's also adjusting the airfile and cfg files as well. This model has been around a long time but "dandog" asked the right question concerning the props and it seems to have mushroomed from there, lol.

I'll have to watch some of the video's. . .I know the pics I see of people flying it (like the article in AOPA Mag from last year), make it look almost like the plane isn't powerful enough to get off the ground with anyone in it, lol. Surprisingly though, the AOPA article notes that when they took it up for it's first check flight, the test pilot had to shut down one engine because it was running rough. The plane continued a normal climb to pattern altitude, made the circuit and landed with no problems. Pretty impressive.

Quick update on progress....
I've been playing with it in FS9 because I can use AFSD & I think its just about there, but have just transferred it to FSX & the engine rpm is way out - so more fiddling in the .air file & a dedicated set of FSX files too - including the exterior cameras!!!
I still have to make the VC look like the 2D cockpit, the levers need to work as well as have the same shape! I also need to get the mag switch & the 'starter switches' into the VC.
Falcon: I presume that you will create/modify the panel.cfg to add the radio to the VC as part of your Hi res scheme?, or shall I do that?
Keith

Great paint and fine sharpness on the pit Falcon. Excellent Keith, sounds super. I love the airplane, twitchy as it might be.

Took the Cricket, fresh paint and all on a flight from Sion to Malpensa. . .over the alps. I kept it below 9000', but climbing was not a problem with speeds dropping as low as 75kias at one point as I tried to slowly creep over a peak, lol. I don't know that the real airplane could make that trip, but it's so much fun to fly and with a great view from the bulbous canopy that real or not. . .she did quite well. One nice thing about the Cricket, when cleared for final at Malpensa, I could drop right down onto the rwy and get clear before the Tower could tell me to "go-around", lol.

Wow, impressive Keith. I didn't realize you were going that deep into this, lol. I would guess it would be pretty simple to add the radio with FSPanel Studio. I want to adjust the panel artwork because (for whatever reason) the original art is squeezed together causing the gauges to be egg shaped rather than round. Normally I think the sim actually reverts the art to it's proper shape, but this one does not. I'm working to correct that if possible.:salute:

Seems no matter how I reshape the panel bitmap, when it imports, it's squeezed. I don't get why someone would do that. . .what advantage is there in mishaping a piece of artwork.

Falcon409, while you were up clearing mountain peaks, I went the other way. Small planes, small places. I decided to go sight seeing in the Grand Canyon. Don't tell ATC or the FAA. I think I broke some flight minimums.

Nice shots Dan. Now that would be a blast. . .down low in the canyon zippin' along just above the river. . .very cool.:applause:

Falcon; I must admit that I thought the egg shape was only in the 2D panel & that only because I was using a reduced screen in order to show AFSD....
Looking more deeply I can see (or not...) your problem & I have no answer either - so leave well alone methinks!!! No-one else seems to have spotted it!
I've had a similar revelation having gone back to the original .cfg & .air file in FSX - they seem to work quite well, with only the rpm is a little bit on the high side, so I'm proposing only a few changes to the .cfg to cater for my revised eye point due to the modified .mdl & to add camera positions & increase the MoI's in order to get it to spin.
Am now modifying the Gmax to get the levers & switches to look & act like the 2D view & will upload for a Beta test session hopefully in the next day or so.

Good plan Keith, I'm at a loss as to how to correct this since the sim seems to be taking orders from within the mdl file. I have sent an e-mail to the originator in hopes that he can shed some light on what happened here with the panel distortion and how I might be able to correct it.

Update: Saw a panel similar to this one on a RW Cricket. Need to be more refined, but for a quickie to see how it might look. . . .hmmm?

I will see if I can look in the Gmax to see if I can spot any distortion in the instrument panel mapping - he might have fiddled the sizes.....
On the other hand I rather prefer your screenshot!!! I did notice however that if one measures the circle that is on the panel.bmp it is elliptical by a couple of millimetres.
Keith

[edit] Just checked the Gmax & the dimensions are: 0.478m x 0.483m, so it looks as if the distortion is there - I will experiment on my next export to .mdl.

Thanks Keith. The dimension of the art in the panel.cfg file is 512x512. When I did the quick piece of art for this panel I made the areas for the gauges normal size even though the panel itself is squished. So once the gauges were placed and loaded into FSX, the distortion was minimal. . .much better than if I had conformed to the odd distortion that the original artwork displayed. I'm going to do the "new" style panel in a finished version as well as keep the original layout so I have several options for panels. Hopefully I'll hear from the developer, but if not, well, we'll see what happens. Thanks for looking into it as well.

I'm having difficulty with the joystick _ I do not know how he has animated it in the VC - its most peculiar - its not in the panel.cfg & its not a standalone .xml. I've just tried removing the 'dummy' pivots & re-animating it according to the SDK (FS9 that is) & its made no difference at all, so I suspect that somehow its tied in with the makemdlparts in Gmax that he had invented...not a lot of help. (Mind you he must have been a clever s*d back then in 2002 when it was created!!!)
All this means though is that the aileron trimmer doesn't work in the VC, so maybe that will be a luxury.
BTW changing the panel proportions in Gmax did nothing, so it might be due to bad alignment/scaling of the panel which is distorted widthwise in the .bmp.
I have also changed the engine/prop numbering as he had it wrong, as left was right & vice versa if you use the start & mag switches in the 2D panel. I'm nearly there doing those switches in the VC, but its trial & error placing them to match the texture.
Keith

I'm going to postpone any further work on the VC panel until you're finished Keith. It's probably counterproductive for me to be adding or subtracting anything until I see the final update.:salute:

Second thoughts Falcon, if you send me your panel.bmp I should then be able adjust the mapping to suit (hopefully). I believe you have my e-mail address.
