well, I have to say that this plane has nailed the essence of Soviet Technology at it's best. 1: engine autostart didn't work. first I was bit dumbstruck, tried again, no luck. "Damned western technology.." I had to find out how to start the engine manually.. after I had recovered from 5 minutes of hysterical laughter.
2: Now, this is the good part.. Flying the thing. Well, more like not crashing it, which I did somewhat successfully. Now I understand what Finnish aces meant when they said that Soviet planes seemed to be dancing around on the sky like mosquitos. This plane has very short takeoff ability, which is good. Sadly, it has directional stability of average housefly. I had to fight to keep it in the air until I got some speed, then I had it flying.. like a dolphin that jumps up and down in the waves. I tried the trim to get it somewhat stable.. Which this plane simply ignored, being a communist plane and all. And that's not all. It pulls 10G turns easily, and 5.5G turns when you don't touch the stick at all.
at this point, I was laughing so hard that my eyes were watering.. and then I tried to land the thing. Approached the airfield normally, lowered gear.. and flaps, which was a mistake. Nose jumped up instantly and refused to come down until I had crash-landed tail first at less than 50mph or such, which is a first one for me. The pilots gestures described relief when he was standing on terra firma again, and I could not do anything else but feel sympathy for the guy.
conclusion.
1: you need to be Russian to understand how to fly this plane, let alone have a dogfight with it.
2: you need to be very drunk to fly this plane since this plane requires exaggerated inputs to recover from any slight input you've made intentionally.
3: You also need to be the greatest ace ever to survive from the experience, and control over your emotions to avoid helpless laughter.
I wish that there's bit more manageable version coming.. unless this is as realistic as it can get. I wouldn't be surprised if it is 100% true to the real thing.
