DeHavilland Hornet is Back!

I own that plane, purchased when it was still an AlphaSim offering. It's an older Alpha model but is still very nice. One of the things I like about it is that the plane is "slippery as warm butter" when it comes to frame rates. It has an excellent 2D and VC, the visuals are very good, even by todays standards and she's FAST! Not real sure about the range on the Hornet but Alpha included a "racing" variant that looks as fast on the ground as it is in the air.

The real thing with drop tanks had a range of about 3000 miles. Good to hear the Alphasim model is back on the market!

That 3,000 miles is at cruise speed. Push it hard and that figure drops dramatically. Flat out it will only do 620-650 Nm even with the drop tanks but it is motoring along. I did a practice leg for the Round the World Race in it the other evening and got 473 Kns ground speed at 28,800 ft with a 34 Kn tail wind.

Hey Tom,

I see that you've posted an updated air file and cfg file for the Sea Hornet. I can see that you've corrected the fuel capacity to give it a realistic range with 200 gall drop tanks, but what changes have you made to its performance?

I was getting about 435 KTAS (500mph) with the original, and with your amended file I'm getting about 397 KTAS (457mph), in FSX. According to the performance text, max speed should be 472mph. What figures are you guys getting with the new files?

The speed you are getting is on military power. Previous versions of the hornet used an unrealistic full time wep availability. Hit the wep and you should get the full 472 mph. Not the ideal solution, but you couldn't really run these things at full power all that long anyway.

The old Alphasim model now owned by Virtavia was way too hot even for flying on WEP.

The correct speeds listed on the pilot notes manuals should be

The notes refer to the documents that Tako_Kichi and I used to compile the target specs document that was put together to try and develop closer real numbers.

Needless to say documenting what was its real performance caused the Alphasim version to be put in poor light.

Its still a fine FS9 model just not an accurate flight model when it comes to speed.
