Dino's Cat is out!!

Your welcome, not sure i understand the intake part , but what whatever you say.. This one is ready for download in case you didn,t know..It,s still under work that,s way I named it "version1".
The intake part was meant to Bob (familton).
Your repaint looks perfect. I love all the details, but i will happily download any newer version, if you feel the need to update something. It's amazing how fast you make those very real looking repaints.

Just noticed this Light bug at the top of the tail on the latest update.

I can't wait for the next fix for the lights, and those other repaints they all look amaising! :applause:
I just wish it had a better afterburner effect as mine looks bad!

The AB is another issue and known before beta 1 so in the future there may be a release of the Tomcat with an improvement. The Tomcat isn't finished as has been stated many times.

Perhaps someone can help Dino with a better AB or use another freeware AB effect.

cheers:ernae:

A couple of folks are looking into that. The question is, does the AB effect "extend & retract" as a texture and/or part of the model in reaction to throttle movements? Looking at the bleed through of the effect, I wonder of the effect/texture when our of AB is retracted into a narrower section behind the nozzle and thus bleeds through at times? I remember the old Captain Sim Mig-21UM having a modeled in AB effect/texture that didn't look so good. A gentleman( I can't recalled who he was) created a transparent texture to render the modeled in effect invisible ans then he added his own AB effect and texture. It turned out looking great and transformed the Mig-21 into a much nicer model.

Maybe those who had some experience with the Aerosoft F-16 and Acceleration F/A-18 AB's could help with the burner effect on this model.

The Aerosoft F-16 and default Hornet have modeled afterburners, they are not effects files like Dino's Tomcat; which is why they don't "wander". The wandering effects was a problem from the start with FSX and to my limited knowledge isn't fixable as its a game engine problem. The modeled afterburners make it easier to have different "zones" be visible which to my knowledge hasn't been accomplished with effects files.

I was I who did the alpha channel invisibility " trick" on the cptsim Mig 21 afterburner because it was modelled with the aircraft. A budy of mine designed all those nice afterburner effects for the Fs9 mig21,s .

The problem for FSX is the AB effect alone, from what I understand. To look ok needs to be modelled with the aircraft.I,ll have my buddy look into it.

:applause::applause:What a way to start my Vacation!!!! Thanks Dino for this impressive piece of work and she traps real fine on the Nimitz. LOVE IT!

Ahhhh okay. I remember seeing that file on the old Screenshots forum some time ago before it closed.

Anyhow, looking at the Tomcat's AB effect. the lights are encoded into the model file so at this point there doesn't appear to be a quick and easy way to make a drop in effect work with an activation gauge set in the panel config. If I had to guess, any update of the AB effect will be somewhat extensive. There are 8 supplied effects files for the model and 1 DDS and 1 BMP burner textures located in the main texture folder. Of a few areas this Tomcat model should be tweaked, this is one of them for sure. The stock AB effect isn't horrible but the model itself is too nice not to polish out details like these. FSX certainly requires more skill & knowledge to perform little updates like this than FS9 for sure. Personally, I think the original Iris Aniburner effect is the all time best AB effect for FS )that I have ever seen). Too bad it is not as easily employed in FSX models as it was FS9 models. Hopefully soon the new Cat can have a new burner effect to compliment it's pure elegance! For now, I am still happy just to have it and enjoy flying her.

If anyone likes this AB effect, the answer is very simple and easy to apply. I have read all the above posts about adding a new after burner effect but do not see the problem. If anyone is interested in the following burner effect I can detail easily how I did it.

The effect comes from Kirk Olssons Viper and uses Roland Laborie's Mirage N burner effect.
