Does anyone fly the Alpha RA-5C Vigilante?

OBIO

I love this big bird....even if it doesn't have radial engines and props. One of my favorite jets.

I am doing some work to the plane...setting up the 2D and VC panels, nice engine and AB effects, and have done up a paint template for the bird and redone the stock paint with sharper detailing. Trying to get it to fly right as well...which is the hard part for me.

Before I get all involved in doing up a number of paints for the plane....I want to know if anyone flies it. No point in painting 5 or 6 or 10 different schemes if no one flies the plane. I am content with the single paint since I fly from the VC.

Hi OBIO,

You bet I fly this great airplane! I hope you will make the five or six repaints of this airplane I also have background info on the plane, I had found a model of the A-5 for FS9 which was the early version with no hump, now I cannot find it, please continue in your great work.

Cheers

Casey

I'm game. Have a set of scenery for the USS Constellation. I have been collecting Vietnam era aircraft for it.

I started working on it a long time ago. Don't remember how far I got but I'll check quick. If your'e putting in time on it then I will too. :jump:

'You betcha!" I've tweaked this ol' gal for FS2002, so any improvements to the 2D would be greatly appreciated.

Is that the Abacus vietnam carrier ops? I'm working on improved AI for her with CAP's, strike packages and seakings on SAR.

Here is what I have so far. Haven't worked on mach 2 and some other areas yet.

description=© ALPHA Simulations 2005\n\nNorth American RA-5C Vigilante\n\nPlanned in late 1950's as a successor to the AJ-1 Savage, the Vigilante prototype first flew in 1958 and was decades ahead of its time, with many 'firsts' such as a digital computer, INS, slab tail and variable inlets and much more. Although conceived as a bomber, the USAF soon adopted the nuclear strike role which meant the A-5 was used solely for the recon role. The RA-5C was used in Vietnam (18 were lost) and continued in service until 1980.

I fly it alot, I drop in an F5 panel and some F18 sounds to try and create a more realistic effect.

It would be really nice a decent panel and more repaints though.

The 2D panel bmp is the original one that came with the plane...it is now a part of the panel bmp collection that Phil released as freeware and posted to Simviation.com (40 meg down load, well worth having). Someone who bought this plane back when it was payware was kind enough to send me the original config file and gauges. I am swapping out the stock gauges for better looking ones. Will be adding a full radio stack, a nice large GPS unit and a CD Player...got to have music! And a fuel management pop up as well....I took the 3 center tanks and combined them into one large tank...I don't have a fuel selector with Left, Center 1, Center 2, Center 3, and Right. No auxiliary fuel tanks.

I have the engine effects, after burner, wing vortex thingie all working nicely. I used Alphasim effects and either stock AS effects gauges or a couple the I modified a bit.

I will get the panel set posted later today or tonight...need to do some tweaking to it yet. Will also upload the repainted stock skin....looks much sharper...not a lot of grime or fading, just a hint at the panel lines....need to check to make sure I used the proper US Navy gray color on the plane.

Have a second paint started. RVAH-3, NAS Albany, Georgia, 1971.

Have a ton of profiles for the Vigilante....won't be doing them all...but will do 5 to 10 of the nicer looking ones. If someone has a particular scheme that want done....maybe to commemorate the squadron you served with or some such...and have images, feel free to pass them along.

aeromed...I will check out the config file you did....the one I am working with was done by Bob Cichilio (can never remember how to spell his last name) as part of his 3rd update to the plane. Up to 400 knots or so, the plane flies like a dream...but go over 400 knots and it wants to climb, climb, climb. Takes a ton of down trim to get it to fly level...even at 80% cruising power.

Is that the Abacus vietnam carrier ops? I'm working on improved AI for her with CAP's, strike packages and seakings on SAR.

Glad to hear that. I do not use any of Abacus' default aircraft. Use Alphasim's F-4 and F8, The GMax Academy F-8, and Razbam's A-4s and A-6. The Vigilante would be a great add on.

Same here. Only bought it for the carrier. In a 60's mood at the moment with navy aircraft and AI on both sides of the atlantic.

Hi Obio

I don't fly the Viggie that much nowadays as I'm now pretty much permanently in FSX-land. But I do love this bird and new cleaned-up skins are very tempting and a new paint kit would be wonderful. I might even think about a port-over with 2048 x 2048 .dds texture files.....!

Many thanks

DaveQ

I'm game. Have a set of scenery for the USS Constellation. I have been collecting Vietnam era aircraft for it.

Just checked...and I have a very sharp profile for a USS Constellation based Vigilante. Will be the next paint I do.

I checked...and the gray I was using was about 3 shades darker than the Gull Gray used on the Vig....but, using the Gull Gray the places on the fuselage where the poly flatten was used shows up more (those dark areas caused by the mesh smoothing). I think I will go with the darker, non-standard gray to better conceal the poly smoothing areas.

Some good color shots

Here is a link to a RVAH-9 template showing insignia and colors:
http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww3/b/795/3/0/14

I was a Jet Mechanic for RVAH-9 from 1970-1974
Stationed in NAS ALbany ,GA and then we moved to NAS Key West

Used to use Alameda Chocks at high power and run both of those GEJ79-10 to full burner- 17,000 lbs of thrust, each engine, at sea level
The older GEJ79-8 would squeel as you reduced the power from the militay position on the throttles- the 10's stopped that noise

Really a great bird

I`m texturing again after longlong time and I`m going to paint a "what if" Vigilante for the Brazilian Navy...I luv this beauty!

Hey Foo.

You want a copy of my Photoshop paint template? If so, shoot me a PM with your e-mail addy.

That offer is good for anyone who wants a copy of the template.

I fly the Viggie. When I was learning to fly at Bolton Field, I watched Viggies in the traffic pattern at KCMH, where North American built them. Later, it was not unusual to find myself in the the pattern with OV-10s.

Bring on the repaints!

Marc

About done with phase II. Achieved stable mach 2.2, dirty approach speed for deck landing about 138. But I just cannot fix the issue with the pitch axis being somewhere back by the elevators instead of the wings. Maybe Milton knows where this can be fixed. Other fine tunes still in progress.

OBIO, there are already a couple of Vigilante textures: texture_155359.zip and texturevah.zip as well as a couple of panels Ra5c-01b.zip by Massimo Altieri and RA-5Cupdate by Bob Chicilo. The textures are for RVAH-1 & -2.

The RA-5C is from the era of colorful Navy aircraft, before the insipid pale grey with (only) slightly darker markings. Fertile ground for super liveries, so Go boy, Go!!! :ernae:

I tried that panel in the Alpha. The 2D came over but the original Alpha VC persisted. Too bad cause the other VC is quite nice.
